Two big games in the “sunshine” state yesterday. One earlier in the day, UGA over Florida, 23 – 20. Very chippy game, those two teams just do not get along! The big one was last night in Tallahassee and these teams historically do not get along and have played some wonderfully exciting and competitive games over the years. Last night was no exception in the first half, but by the time the third quarter was well under way, it was game over…Noles on the way to a huge victory. Guess we can now all understand that 22 point spread…FSU 41 – Miami 14. Both of Miami’s touchdowns were the result of interceptions thrown by young FSU QB sensation “Famous Jameis” but he did not let it get to him and came back out in the second half to lead the Noles to a thorough thrashing of the then 7th ranked Hurricanes. Things got a little chippy, but paled in comparison to the game down Interstate 10 in the other direction earlier in the day. Really bad news for Miami, RB Duke Johnson left with an injured ankle in a cast and may be lost for the rest of the season. Have to think there is a strong possibility these two teams will meet again in the ACC Championship game. Miami plays Virginia Tech next weekend and the Hokies dropped another yesterday to Boston College (35 – 27) so would look to favor the Hurricanes in that game. Still, one never knows. The big games ahead as far as FSU and BCS implications are concerned will be taking place this week/weekend. Thursday night, 2 Oregon visits 5 Stanford (now 6) and Saturday 1 Alabama hosts 10 LSU. Also, think the Iron Bowl (Bama vs. now 7 Auburn) is going to be a war!
Meanwhile in Atlanta, Georgia Tech overcame a couple of bad fumbles, a dropped pass right in the receiver’s hands to prevail over Pittsburgh, 21 – 10. Very nice homecoming victory for the Jackets. And, WR Smelter did redeem himself with an extraordinary catch later in the game over two Pitt defenders which led to the TD that sealed the deal for the Jackets. Robert Godhigh was a stud (all 5′ 7″ of him!) scoring two rushing touchdowns! Good to get out of that game with a win as the Pitt passing attack took off in the second half.
Latest AP and Coaches Polls are out (BCS to follow tonight).
AP Poll: 1 Alabama (52), 2 Oregon (2), 3 FSU (6), 4 Ohio State, 5 Baylor, 6 Stanford, 7 Auburn, 8 Clemson, 9 Missouri, and 10 LSU.
Coaches Poll: 1 Alabama (54), 2 Oregon (5), 3 FSU (3), 4 Ohio State, 5 Baylor, 6 Stanford, 7 Clemson, 8 Oklahoma, 9 Missouri, and 10 Auburn.
Baylor passes Stanford in both polls (?) and little bit of difference in 7 thru 10 between the two polls. Duke got one vote in the AP Poll! Way to go Dukies!
Tennis news: Novak Djokovic prevented David Ferrer from becoming the first man to repeat as champion of the Paris Masters 1000, winning 7 – 5, 7 – 5. Ferrer had a chance to serve for the second set but failed to do so and Novak took control to win the match. Off to London now for the ATP Year End from the O2 arena!
