A surprise in Paris (tennis)!

A surprise in Paris in the semifinals of the 1000 Masters event (although alas, not the surprise I was wanting!).  World number 1 Rafael Nadal fell to countryman and good buddy David Ferrer, 6 – 3, 7 – 5.  Not only surprising outcome, but it did not even go three sets.  Ferrer is the defending champion of this event and noone has ever repeated as champion.  He will get the chance tomorrow against world number 2 Novak Djokovic who defeated Roger Federer in three sets, 4 – 6, 6 – 3, 6 – 2.  Sigh….I had such hope this morning as I watched Fed take the first set.  It was a close and hard fought three set match but Djokovic seemed to get momentum midway through the second set and Roger began to make too many unforced errors by the arrival of the third and deciding set.  Also, Fed could not get enough points off his second serve as the match went on.  All in all a good week for Roger, however.  He secures a place in the year end final next week in London, made the semifinals of this event, earns points, and will get a little more rest before next week’s action begins.  So, tomorrow Djokovic vs. Ferrer in the final.  As a side note:  Del Potro who fell to Federer in three sets yesterday was robbed at the train station in Paris as he was getting ready to travel to London for next week’s event.  He turned to oblige an autograph request, and his bags were stolen, turned around for twenty seconds and they were gone!  What a world we live in.  He lost his passport, wallet, clothes, and a rosary that had special meaning to him.  It was a gift from the Pope who he had the opportunity to meet earlier this year.

As for the London groupings:  Group A will be Nadal, Ferrer, Berdych and Wawrinka.  Group B will be Djokovic, Del Potro, Federer and Gasquet.

College Football action well underway.  UGA and Florida are partying, excuse me, I meant playing in Jacksonville and the Dawgs are up 14 – 0 in the first quarter.  Very chippy atmosphere from the outset.

14 South Carolina had little trouble with Miss State today and Virginia Tech lost their second game in a row, falling to Boston College, 34 – 27.  My oh my, what is happening to the Hokies?  Later…3FSU vs. 7 Miami.  Also, GT hosts Pittsburgh in Atlanta.

Until later…
