What a huge day of tennis is on tap today from the Sony Open in Miami…the round of 16 for the men…all the top guys in action. Sandwiched in between…two women’s quarterfinals!
The men’s lineup is as follows: Djokovic vs. T. Robredo (Nole wins, 6-3, 7-5); Ferrer vs. Nishikori (going three!); Nadal vs. Fognini; Federer vs. Gasquet; Wawrinka vs. Dolgopolov; Murray vs. Tsonga (could be interesting?); Isner vs. Berdych (important match for Isner, the last American male left standing!); Raonic vs. Becker. In between these great matchups…Sharapova will take on Kvitova (who dispatched Ivanovic yesterday in an odd match, 3-6, 6-0. 6-0!) and also Serena Williams vs. A. Kerber Two other women’s quarterfinals will take place tomorrow. Really sad to see Venus Williams fall to D. Cibulkova last night in three sets, 1-6, 7-5, 3-6. Good to see Venus looking healthy and strong after her health struggles over the past two years. She is really a class act. But then again, congrats to the diminutive Cibulkova, tiny in height but very powerful. I love the way she describes herself, happy and full of energy, just like her idol, Kim Clijsters (has there been a classier and/or more well liked women’s player that Kim?)!! Meanwhile, A. Radwanska did manage to advance, in a grueling tough three set win over the teenager from the Ukraine, Svitolina, late yesterday. Looks like Aggie is still going strong inspite of that nagging left knee injury (not to mention the shoulder problem she has carried for over a year). Li Na is also into the quarters and is a real threat to take the title (hopefully husband, “Dennis” will not be asked to leave the stands as has happened in the past!!) Rafa is looking very strong, winning his match over Istomin in 59 minutes…still I am hoping Mr. Federer can get it done in Miami (coming up just short last week in beautiful Indian Wells, CA, three set loss to Nole).
Back later with all the “winners”!
And today’s winners….Sharapova over Kvitova, 7-5, 6-0 (Kvitova just sort of faded away in the second set); Serena Williams over A. Kerber, 6-2, 6-2. Men’s action: Roger Federer over Richard Gasquet 6-1, 6-2 (that would be in 49 minutes, better than Rafa’s 59 minute victory the other night!); Djokovic over T. Robredo, 6-3, 7-5; K. Nishikori over David Ferrer, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 and now he will get Mr. Federer; Dolgopolov over Stan Wawrinka, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, Stan has faded a bit in the past two tournaments; Murray over Tsonga, 6-4, 6-1, setting up a nice quarterfinal with Djokovic; M. Raonic over B. Becker, 6-3, 6-4; and American John Isner fell to Thomas Berdych, 6-3, 7-5 (no more men from the USA left in the tournament). Rafael Nadal is taking the court now to play Fognini of Italy…expect Rafa to get it done.
Another great day of tennis on tap tomorrow…until then!
P.S. Heavens, I almost forgot…breaking news from the world of pop culture. Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin (Coldplay) have called it a day on their marriage (two kids). Sad…
