The carnage continued today at the US Open for top seeded women at Flushing Meadows. Venus Williams (#19) fell to Sara Errani (yes, ranked higher) 0-6, 6-0, 6-7 in a really crazy match. First set 6-0 to Errani, second set to Venus 6-0 and then Venus had the match on her racquet in the third set at 5-3 and serving and was broken. From there it went on to 6-6 and then a scintillating tie break. Hate to see Venus go out…that doubles match with sis Serena was a tough one late yesterday afternoon. Anyhow..#2 S. Halep falls to Lucic-Baroni in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2. Really shocking as Halep as done quite well at the Majors this year, not winning but making it into the late rounds. Disappointed for her as well. Finally, #9 A. Kerber falls to a young, up and coming Swiss player, Bencic, 6-1, 7-5. Nice to see a Swiss woman do well (joining Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka on the men’s side representing Switzerland!) The women’s side of this tournament has been crazy in the first week of action. The men’s side has been way more predictable. Let’s hope no craziness occurs tonight when Roger Federer takes the court against the hard serving Aussie Sam Groth. He has been clocked as serving a serve at 163mph. WOW! That’s OK, I think Mr. Federer will get it done! ROGER THAT!
Meanwhile, college football in full swing tomorrow. Forgot to mention the Alabama vs. West Virginia matchup in my previous post. Going to go with Bama! USC, UCLA, and Stanford are more of the Pac-12 teams that are “Pre-Season Ranked” and take the field to start their seasons (Arizona State won last night). Really glad to see Pac-12 football getting respect and its due. Yes, SEC, they do play some good football on the west coast. Wish we could all be in California! Maybe in the not too distant future!
SEC is still awesome, ACC deserves more respect as well. OK, I am done. Time for some fun and then Federer time!
Again, have a great Labor Day weekend!
