CFB – Who impressed, who did not!

First CFB Saturday has come and gone (10 Baylor plays tonight) and there were some impressive performances, and then some perhaps disappointing ones?  Who impressed?  Well, first of all as already addressed, Kenny Hill and the Texas A&M Aggies in their thorough thumping of South Carolina on Thursday night.  As for Saturday’s action, 1 FSU was not so impressive…less that what was expected but perhaps those Cowboys of Oklahoma State are a bit better than expected.  Two interceptions by Winston in a 37-31 escape victory in Arlington, Texas.  2 Alabama…not so impressive.  Tough time in a win over West Virginia, 33-23 in Atlanta.  Again, maybe West Virginia is a bit better than expected, but the Tide did not roll as anticipated.  7 UCLA and QB Brett Hundley struggled against a surprisingly tough Univ. of Virginia defense and came away with a less than impressive 28-20 win in Charlottesville.  Now, to be fair, it was a noon kickoff which was 9:00 am to the boys from the west coast!  15 USC rolled all over Fresno State, 52-13 and looked good!  Speaking of looking good…3 Oregon and Marcus Mariota just ran up and down and all around over South Dakota at home, 62-13.  Expected that but they sure did look good doing it!  6 Auburn looked impressive in their win over Arkansas, 45-21.  It was tied at 21-21, there was a weather delay, but with the two quarterbacks they managed to take control in the second half.  Still, not sure about the two quarterback mentality.  One of the more exciting games, 13 LSU came from behind to score 21 unanswered points and defeat 14 Wisconsin, 28-24.  They trailed 24-10 but LSU just has speed, and a lot of it!  Probably a costly loss for Wisconsin.  Moving on, in Athens, 12 UGA looked very impressive (hard to say, as a GT fan, but true) in defeating 16 Clemson, 45-21.  It was tied 21-21 and then it was all UGA and Todd Gurley, four rushing TDs.  Very impressive performance by Gurley.  5 Ohio State was in a battle early with Navy but came to life in the second half to win 35-17.  Pretty impressive.  23 North Carolina defeated Liberty 41-23 but actually trailed early, 23-22.  Not sure if that was impressive or not.  11 Stanford very impressive in defeating UC Davis, 45-0 but was also expected.  So, week one is almost in the books and have to wonder about those preseason college rankings.  Don’t know if the top five will change, but wonder if some other teams might pick up some first place votes?

Tennis action last night under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium saw E. Bouchard advance in three sets and veteran Tommy Robredo advance over up and comer Nick Krygios in four sets.

Today…Mr. Federer to serve!  He will be the last day session match on Ashe Stadium facing Granollers and will be preceded by Wozniacki vs. Sharapova.  Looking forward as always to watching Mr. Federer!

Enjoy your Sunday on this Labor Day weekend!
