Davis Cup action in tennis…and some pop culture news

Davis Cup quarterfinal action underway today in full force.  In Geneva, Switzerland, disappointment in the first match as Stan “the man” Wawrinka fell to Golubar (who?) of Kazakhstan in four sets to put the Swiss behind at 0-1.  Then, of course, Roger Federer took the court and won his match in straight sets to give the shocked Swiss a 1-1 tie.  (You can count of Roger!!)  Tomorrow, Wawrinka and Federer will team up in a very important doubles match, probably a must win match and then Federer will likely play the first singles match on Sunday (or the second, depending on how the doubles match unfolds).  Switzerland was projected to advance from this quarterfinal and hopefully move on to the semifinals with their best chance in many years of winning the Davis Cup.  This would be an accomplishment still missing from Roger’s resume (along with an Olympic singles gold medal; he is of course a silver medalist and also won the gold medal in doubles with Wawrinka.)  Hard to find any holes in Mr. Federer’s resume so best to shut up and move on…especially since I love Roger Federer!!  GO SWISS!

France, expected to challenge the Swiss finds themselves down 0-2 after today’s shocking results.  Both Benneteau and Tsonga fell, with the German team they were facing missing their stars…Tommy Haas and P. Kolshreiber.  Hey, wait a minute, Haas has dual citizenship (US and German).  Maybe Jim Courier should recruit him for team USA (I think this idea was bantered about, probably in jest, but perhaps not?)  So, tomorrow will bring some really interesting Davis Cup action, the Swiss needing to take the doubles match with their two stars in action, and then France needing to come from behind and win the doubles match and both singles matches on Sunday.  A tall order for France; I think Roger and Stan will get it done for Switzerland!

Interesting news greeted us last night as far as late night TV..David Letterman announced his retirement.  He chose last night to do so, with non other than Johnny Depp as one of the guests.  Really good show with Depp appearing…his film Transcendence will be out April 18th.  Loved the exchange about the “kiddies” and comments on Depp wearing a female engagement ring.  It would seem the first ring he bought for his fiance, Amber Heard, was too big so he decided he would wear it and yes, of course, she is sporting a gorgeous sparkler on her ring finger.  One thing about Johnny Depp, he is so giving when it comes to his fans. He always shows up at the Kid Choice Awards, MTV Awards, Teen Choice Awards, you name it, he is there!  Also, what a huge talent!!!!  Very sad to see Dave go next year but well done and god speed!

Tonight, one of my favorite TV shows returns, Unforgettable with Poppy Montgomery and Dylan Walsh.  It airs on CBS at 8:00 pm EST.  If you are not already a fan, check it out!!

Until later…

Apologies to NBA fans…big news from last night.  San Antonio Spurs nineteen game winning streak was snapped by OKC, 106-94.  Bummer, but great night for Kevin Durant, 26 points!
