Here it is…early Saturday sports report (4:00 pm EST). So much more still to come, very hard to keep up with it all!
Tennis..P. Kvitova (Wimbledon champ and #3 seed) is out at US Open. She fell in straight sets to qualifier Krunic, 6-4, 6-4. The carnage continues on the women’s side of the draw. Serena Williams is on Ashe Stadium court now and leads Lepchenko, 6-3 after one set. Djokovic wins in three easy sets (one hour, 26 minutes), Andy Murray needs four sets, and M. Raonic advances in three tough sets, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6. By the way, Roger Federer had his “beautiful game” on display as he took care of Sam Groth, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 last night under the lights! Sharapova followed and took out Lisicki in two easy sets. Update: Serena wins in two sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Meanwhile, CFB is underway with a vengeance! Georgia Tech looked iffy against Wofford at home on opening day in the first half, 10-9 at the half?? They woke up in the second half, scoring on all four of their possessions and sophomore QB J. Thomas came to life as well. He finished with 282 yards passing and GT had 505 yards of total offense. Little worried about the “D”, but feel better after the second half. 7 UCLA had all they could handle at Virginia, surviving 28-20. Nice effort by the Cavs. Buckeye fans can relax, close game for three quarters but 5 Ohio State takes cares of Navy 34 – 17. From Dublin, Ireland (yes, Ireland), Penn State kicks a field goal with three seconds left to defeat UCF, 26-24. College Football in Ireland, what next? Alabama and West Virginia are underway in Atlanta, 3-3 in the first. Lane Kiffin making his debut as the offensive co-coordinator under Nick Saban.
Later today…Auburn vs. Arkansas; USC hosts Fresno State, Wisconsin at LSU (should be a really good one!), Clemson visits UGA in steamy Athens, and preseason #1 FSU takes on Oklahoma State in Arlington, Texas. Stanford in action this afternoon as well. #3 Oregon will play late!
Gee..I need to breathe! Think I am going to kick back and relax and watch some football and tennis!! Later…
Few more final scores…2 Alabama 33 – West Virginia 23. Bama not exactly looking like #2 in nation but still a win! Auburn leads Arkansas 38 – 21 and is in a weather delay! 12 UGA and 16 Clemson in a battle, UGA up in 3rd quarter 24-21.
Tennis…Azarenka looking more and more like the Vika we all know and love, defeats Vesnina 6-1, 6-1. Phillip Kolschreiber upsets John Isner, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6. As always, tie break sets for Isner, just not in his favor. Under the lights tonight, Bouchard leads Z. Strycova 6-2 after the first set. Young Nick Krygios vs. veteran Tommy Robredo up later.
