Roger Federer advanced in the finals of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany today by virtue of a two set win over K. Nishikori, 6-3, 7-6. Roger has won this title six times and tomorrow he will go for number 7 as Wimbledon looms and gets underway June 23rd. Very funny moment occured when in the tie break, Roger was serving on match point and after a brief exchange, Nishikori’s ball landed in the net. Game, set, match Federer, except Roger went back to the service line ready to go again!! The crowd and Nishikori were all a bit puzzled and then Federer realized his mistake and threw up his hands as if to say…OK, oh my!! Luthi (coach) and wife Mirka got a big kick out of it as did the entire crowd. It even brought a smile to Nishikori’s face, even in defeat. Gotta love Federer!!!
In the other semifinal, a bit of an upset as A. Falla defeated Phillip Kolschreiber of Germany, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4. So, tomorrow (at some time of day that will not be great for those of us on the east coast of the US, 8:00 am EST I believe) Federer will face A. Falla for the title in Halle. GO FED!
Congratulation to the LA Kings who defeated the NY Rangers in double OT last night to win the Stanley Cup!! They needed a goal in the third period to send it into OT. No goals scored in the first OT and then in the second OT, victory for LA. I love LA!!
The US Open Golf Championships completed round three today. The top five on the leaderboard: Martin Kaymer continues to lead (faltering a bit) at -8, here comes Rickie Fowler at -3 along with E. Compton. Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson round out the top five at -2. Kaymer shot two rounds of 65 (never been done before in the US Open) but today shot 72. Still enough to keep him atop the leaderboard heading into tomorrow’s final round. Other notables: world #1 Adam Scott at +3 along with Rory Mcilroy; Matt Kuchar is at even par and Brandt Snedeker finds himself in sixth place at -1; the wonder kid Jordan Spieth is at +1 and very disappointing performance for Mickelson, +5.
Guess everyone else out there is watching the World Cup. I am waiting to see Messi and Ronaldo!
Have a good night!
P.S. One of my favorite “feel good” movies is on tonight..We Bought A Zoo starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson!
