Federer in control down under

Tomic may have saw fit to run his mouth a bit too much this week leading up to his match with the great Roger Federer.  Mr. Federer decided to just let his tennis speak for itself, dispatching of the young Aussie, 6 – 4, 7- 6, 6-1.  It was a very entertaining match with a lot of tremendous shot making by both, but ultimately more from Federer.  Fed is into the round of sixteen and not looking back.  Next up is another young gun, Raonic from Canada.  (Personally, I really like Raonic better than Tomic, much more classy and respectful of greatness).

Murray advanced in three sets, and Serena continues to show no ill effects from the ankle she rolled in her first match, winning 6 – 1, 6- 3 (coming back in the second set from being down 0 – 3).

Young American up and comer Sloane Stephens defeated Laura Robinson of GRB, Wozniacki advanced in two sets and Radwanska continues to quietly advance in the tournament as well.

One big upset, Del Potro was ousted in five sets by France’s Chardy.

My favorite part of watching the replay of Fed’s match was in the third set and Fed was up 4 – 1 0r 5 -1 as a helicopter began circling overhead, and the commentators surmised that Mr. Federer was ready to go back to his hotel, and it had been summoned!  (Perhaps Mirka sent a text letting them know Rog was about to wrap things up?)  Love it, kind of like Kobe taking a helicopter into the Staples Center. (It is cool, face it!)

Also of note, Fed set another record last night, becoming the first man to win 250 major matches.  He makes history just about every time he takes the court!

Round of 16 resumes tonight, Djokovic and Ferrer and others in action.  Interesting women’s match between Radwanska and Ivanovic.
