Roger Federer played his second round match against B. Kavcic yesterday (last night, early this am, the time change makes it all a bit confusing) and won in convincing fashion, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6. Federer looked like, well he looked like Roger Federer! The larger racquet (98″ as compared to his previous 90″ racquet, actually about 5 square inches larger with larger sweet spot and more power) seems to be working well. An adjustment period is to be expected but in these early rounds, Fed looks very adept and comfortable with his new, larger magic wand. He was clinical in the first two sets. Kavcic, who never played badly, stepped it up in the third and forced Roger to play a tie break to win the match. This match was played under the roof on Hisense, not Rod Laver Arena. This marked the first time Roger has not played a match on Laver at the Australian Open in ten years. Bet there were some really happy ticket holders who did not expect to get to see Federer on Hisense! Really like the new, patterned print shorts Fed is rocking!
Nadal, playing on Rod Laver Arena with the roof closed due to scorching temperatures, advanced with ease over T. Kokkinakis in three sets, 6-4,6-2, 6-2. The real story has been the temperatures. They had to stop play on the outer courts due to the heat (no roofs) and the crowds have stayed away during the heat of the day. Cold front is expected, temperatures should be much more comfortable for the weekend and into next week…seventies! Sharapova played the match of the day, temperatures hit 107 degrees and she needed three sets, finally prevailing in the third set, 10-8. Azarenka advanced in two sets last night (well you know what I mean) and yes, boyfriend Redfoo (LMFAO fame) was in the house!! Also on the women’s side, newly engaged C. Wozniacki (to Rory Mcilroy) advanced over American Christina McHale in three tough sets.
On the men’s side, Tsonga advanced as did Murray and the top half of the draw is absolutely loaded, overloaded actually. Djokovic is setting pretty on the other side of the draw!
Looking forward to the weekend play and hoping Roger Federer can continue to look good! Will be really interesting to see how he fares with his new racquet and the addition of Stefan Edberg to his team as he continues on and hopefully advances to the later stages…facing the likes of Tsonga, Nadal, Murray, and who knows..Djokovic?
