Federer out in two sets – semifinals at Hamburg

Well, bummer of a morning for me, and Roger Federer as well.  Fed went down in the semifinals at Hamburg to the young Argentine, Delbonis, 6 – 7. 6 – 7.  Two straight tie break sets, and Roger is out and Delbonis moves on to his first ever ATP tournament final.  Very well played match by the young player from Argentina.  Not a bad match by Federer, but his first serve percentage needs to be a bit higher and his 2nd serve pts. won was too low, 59% vs. close to 70% for Delbonis.  Roger appears to be struggling in his adjustment to the use of the new larger 98″ Wilson racquet.  Have to expect it takes some time, after all he has used the same Wilson smaller racquet for over a decade.  I truly hope he will get comfortable with the racquet if he plans to continue in the “equipment tweak” as Pete Sampras has said that he truly regretted being too stubborn in the latter stages of his career to try making such a change.  Roger will head home to Switzerland and compete in another small clay court tournament before heading to Toronto for the Rogers Cup, the beginning of the North American hard court swing.  This of course culminates at Flushing Meadow with the US Open.

Meanwhile, congrats to Delbonis who will face Fognini of Italy in tomorrow’s final.  As for me, well I guess I can be happy I will not feel the need to wake up early and watch since Mr. Federer will be headed back home.
