Federer out of year end party and CFB Polls

Roger Federer fell to Rafael Nadal today in semifinal action in London, 5 – 7, 3 – 6.  Really good to see Roger reach the semifinals after the year he has had; could tell the victory over Del Potro yesterday meant a lot to him.  Rafa was just too much and perhaps Fed’s legs were a bit slow after the match yesterday (Nadal was off yesterday).  Just too many unforced errors by Federer, all a part of trying to be aggressive.  Interestingly he seemed to have better results in rallies in which he was a bit more patient.  Certainly had a couple of chances, especially in the first set, to have a different outcome.  So Federer’s year that was comes to an end and Nadal (#1) will advance to face the winner of the Djokovic – Wawrinka semifinal just now getting underway. (Djokovic wins 6-3, 6-3)

Latest College Football Polls out after yesterday’s action (except BCS, out later tonight).  FSU solidified their hold on #2 with a thrashing of Wake Forest, 59 – 3 (benefiting from Oregon’s loss to Stanford on Thursday night, 26 – 20) and Alabama looked virtually unbeatable last night in their victory over LSU, 38 – 17.  The game was actually tied at halftime, 17 – 17 and LSU made some critical mistakes which certainly hurt their cause.  Non the less, Bama looked like one very powerful football machine in the second half.  I still say it is such a shame Stanford had that careless loss to Utah as I believe they match up well with Alabama, strong, powerful, grinding running attack, precision passing, great defense, very physical.  Anyhow…right now it looks like FSU vs. Bama but of course, more football to be played.  The Iron Bowl, (Alabama vs. Auburn) will be played at Auburn.  I don’t think FSU will have trouble with the Gators in Gainesville (Florida lost to Vandy at home yesterday, 34 – 17, first time Vandy has defeated the Gators there in 70+ years!) but Baylor has three ranked teams on their remaining schedule (perhaps including a Big 12 Championship game).  Ohio State has an easy schedule and there is no Big 10 Conference championship game.  And in the Pac 12, perhaps Stanford is on the road to another Pac 12 Championship and trip to the Rose Bowl.  Really hard to see a one loss team getting into the mix with four top rated undefeated teams currently in place.  Still, a few more games to be played.

Did not mind Notre Dame (ranked 21st) going down to Pittsburgh, 28 – 21, especially since Georgia Tech defeated Pitt the weekend before.  Virginia Tech defeated Miami in the pouring rain in Miami, 42 – 24.  The Hurricanes were without RB Duke Johnson (out for the rest of the season with a broken ankle) and were and are a bit overrated I think.  VT may well be the Coastal Division champion to face FSU in the ACC Championship game in Charlotte.  If so, will have to wonder which Hokie team shows up?

AP Poll: 1 Alabama (56), 2 FSU (3), 3 Ohio State, 4 Baylor, 5 Stanford, 6 Oregon, 7 Auburn, 8 Clemson, 9 Missouri, and 10 Texas A & M.

Coaches Poll: 1 Alabama (58), 2 FSU (4), 3 Ohio State, 4 Baylor, 5 Stanford, 6 Clemson, 7 Oregon, 8 Missouri, 9 Auburn, and 10 Oklahoma State.

Heisman frontrunner at this point must be Jameis Winston, QB for FSU but what about A J McCarron of Alabama.  He has two national title rings, is leading his team to what appears to be another shot at the BCS title and he runs the Bama offense to perfection.

So, tonight BCS Poll.  Also for me, two great shows on tonight!   The Good Wife (I don’t know if I like the “new” Alicia?) and an everything comes out in the open episode of Betrayal on ABC at 10:00 pm.
