Happy 66th Birthday to Coach K

Coach K celebrated his 66th birthday yesterday.  He also celebrated with his players a huge victory over rival North Carolina at Cameron Indoor Stadium last night, 73 – 68.  The game was very close throughout, with North Carolina jumping out to a lead.  The smaller team they put on the floor had Duke confused a bit in the early goings and Duke trailed at the half, 29 – 33.  In the second half they made one of their patented runs and never trailed again.  However, the Tarheels hung around, always lurking and the victory was not secure until the final seconds ticked away.  A glaring issue for North Carolina was extremely poor free throw shooting, one could even speculate it perhaps cost them the game.  None the less, 2 Duke (#1 in Coaches poll) remains undefeated at home.  They have certainly circled the March 2 rematch with 3 Miami at Cameron Indoor as Miami embarrassed them in the first meeting this year in Miami.  Also, North Carolina will host Duke on March 9th.

One of the incredible things about this storied rivalry is the fans.  The ESPN announcers commented on the “Cameron crazies” that had camped out for six (6) weeks, twelve (12) people to a tent in order to have tickets for this game last night.  Gotta love it!

Staying in the ACC, 3 Miami survived a tremendous effort by FSU in Leon County Civic Center to stay atop the ACC, winning over the Noles 74 – 68.  Shane Larkin (Miami) is playing himself into serious consideration for player of the year in the ACC.  But of course, Mason Plumlee of Duke, well that is going to be a tough act to beat.  Plumlee is likely a strong candidate for National player of the year.
