The musical sound of those words…”Mr. Federer to serve” will ring in Rome tomorrow at the BNL D’Italia, the last big Masters 1000 clay court event prior to Roland Garros (French Open)! Roger announced on Monday that he was in fact in Rome and would play this event, just six days after the birth of his second set of twins, this time boys, Leo and Lenny, with wife Mirka. She has given him the go ahead…gotta love Mirka…and Roger is ready to play tomorrow and will face J. Chardy in his first match. So happy to know Federer is back in action. Let’s face it, there are points to defend in this decision. Roger made the final last year, losing to Nadal, and he needs another good clay court tournament under his belt prior to heading to France. He is a mere 70 points behind fellow Swiss player Stan Wawrinka in the rankings (Stan at #3, Roger at #4) and he does not want to fall further in the rankings with Ferrer and Berdych hot on his heels prior to the French Open. So, if all goes well, Fed has a great showing in Rome, heads home to spend time with the family, and then is off to Paris!
Meanwhile, action is already underway in Rome. Yesterday, M. Youzhny advanced in two sets, L. Rosol upset the Italian Fognini in two sets, G. Dimitrov (Sharapova’s boyfriend) advanced in two sets, Tsonga over Dolgop0lov in two sets. Today, Djokovic returned after sitting out Madrid with his wrist injury and took care of Stepanek, 6 – 3, 7-5. Wawrinka advanced with ease over qualifier Riba in two sets, thirty five year old Tommy Haas defeated the Italian A. Seppi in two sets (second set tie breaker), P. Kolshreiber took care of T. Robredo in two sets, and D. Ferrer will take the court shortly. Tomorrow, both Nadal and Federer in action. Also, on the women’s side, Serena Williams will play after withdrawing from Madrid last week with a thigh injury.
Until later!!
