Nadal and Djokovic both advance today in Paris

Rafael Nadal advanced rather easily today over K. Nishikori, 6 -4, 6 – 1, 6- 3 sending him into the quarterfinals.  Also advancing was Novak Djokovic.  He dropped the first set to P. Kolschreiber but then rallied to take the next three sets, 6 – 3, 6 – 3, 6 – 4.  He advances into the quarterfinals as well.  Djokovic is playing with a heavy heart, having learned just a couple of days ago of the death of his childhood tennis coach.  He is heartbroken over the news and it is certainly distracting him a bit but one has to expect he will have her in his heart as he continues and play in her honor.  The resurgent thirty five year old Tommy Haas was a three set winner over Youzhny, 6 -1, 6 – 1, 6- 3.  Let’s hear it for the “old” guys!  The best match of the day was a grueling five set match won by Stan Wawrinka (the other Swiss guy) over R. Gasquet of France, 6 – 7, 4 – 6, 6 – 4, 7- 5, 8 – 6.  Wawrinka is a bull!  Way to go Stan.  Tomorrow, Roger Federer vs. J. Tsonga as the quarterfinals get underway.  Should be on live around 10:00 am EST on Tennis Channel and ESPN3 (on your computers for all of you at the office!)

Azarenka, Kirilenko, J. Jankovic and M. Sharapova all advanced on the women’s side into the quarters.  Sharapova took out the young American, Sloane Stephens in straight sets.  Kirilenko advanced over Mattek-Sands and Jankovic defeated Jamie Hampton.  Nice run for all three of those American women.
