Rafael Nadal, fresh off his 9th French Open title, is out after his first match on the grass courts in Halle, Germany. Nadal lost to Dustin Brown, 6-4, 6-1. WOW! Nadal did not just lose, he was whipped!! Huge win for Brown, the 85th ranked player in the world from Germany. Welcome to grass court tennis action (although not as much faster as it was years ago). So, out goes Rafa and that keeps the door open for Roger Federer to win Halle for the sixth or seventh time. Federer was tested, but prevailed today over J. Sousa (from Portugal), 6-7, 6-4, 6-2. Fed moves on, Rafa will begin preparation for Wimbledon. Meanwhile, another member of the “Big Four”, Andy Murray lost in the other grass court “tune-up” in England. So, the Big Four in action prior to Wimbledon, out goes Murray and Nadal, Federer wins, and Djokovic is resting.
Meanwhile, the US Open Golf Championship got underway today from Pinehurst Country Club. After 15 holes, Martin Kaymer held the lead at -3. In the interest of full disclosure, I watched Mr. Federer and the tennis.
