The San Antonio Spurs are the 2014 NBA Champions (for the fifth time in fifteen years)! Congrats to the Spurs…they are the epitome of a “team”, with class and humility, not to mention tremendous talent. They suffered a horrible blow last year in the finals against the Miami Heat when they lost a heartbreaking game six in Miami that they should have won and ended up losing the 2013 finals in seven. Not this year! They defeated Miami last night in San Antonio, 104-87. It was never really close. All of the Spurs victories in this series have been by at least fifteen points, really demolishing the defending champion Heat. No three peat for the Heat, and I am glad. (I bet Kobe Bryant is smiling in LA as well!) The Spurs took this series 4-1 and got to celebrate in front of their boisterous and adoring home crowd. Bill Russell was on hand as was former Spur great David Robinson. Timmy (Tim Duncan), what more can you say, Virgin Islands to Duke standout to seventeen years with the Spurs under Coach Gregg Popovich. Then Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, their version of the big three. Ginobili had fourteen points off the bench in the first half. Tony Parker was 0-7 in the first half but poured it on in the second, at one point making six straight shots. And then Kawhi Leonard, 22 years old and the finals MVP! Did I call it or what? Leonard scored 15 first half points but had to spend a good portion of the second half on the bench due to foul trouble. No problem for the Spurs..they are a team with a very strong bench to compliment their outstanding starting five. The Heat raced to a huge lead early, and then in the blink of an eye, the Spurs had made a run and it was a 24 point turnaround. The Heat would never again really threaten. LeBron did his part, scoring 30+ points but he had no real significant help from his teammates. Again, “team”! Wade had a poor night and when all was said and done…the Spurs were celebrating, hoisting the trophy, while confetti poured down in the AT&T arena and the crowd cheered like they never wanted to leave.
So happy for the Spurs. Now, if the Lakers can just somehow get it together next year in the Western Conference, between the Spurs, the Clippers and OKC, what an interesting year 2015 could be. For now…it is all about the San Antonio Spurs!!
Tonight, check out a great new show on TNT, Murder in the First starring Taye Diggs. It is the second episode of this interesting new detective drama and I am hooked!
Meanwhile, I am resting from the tennis this past weekend (congrats to Mr. Federer on #7 at Halle!) and await Wimbledon which gets underway June 23rd.
Happy Monday one and all!
