Both Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova advanced today into the French Open women’s final, albeit in two very different fashions. Serena took out S. Errani in forty five minutes, 6 – 0, 6- 1. She is attempting to win her first French Open since 2002 which she won over big sis Venus. Maria Sharapova found herself in a three set battle with Victoria Azarenka. Maria won the first set, 6 – 2 and seemed in complete control of the match. Then the wheels fell off a bit, specifically the serve (although neither of these women did a spectacular job of holding serve in this match) and she dropped the second set to Azarenka, 2 – 6. Sharapova came back in the third to win 6 – 4. She served for the match at 5 -2 but was broken but she did not let her second chance get away. So Serena vs. Sharapova for the French Open title…prediction? If Serena plays like she has played recently, gotta go with Serena Williams.
Interesting bit of rumor info…Sharapova v Azarenka is always aptly dubbed the “battle of the screamers”. But, word has it that only one of these two women grunt and scream during both practice sessions and during their on court matches. Guess which one? Azarenka! Apparently Maria manages to practice quietly, but screams during her matches. Interesting….
