Sony Open results

Sony Open in Key Biscayne rolls on and some results are as expected, some unexpected!  Serena Williams took care of Maria Sharapova, 6-2, 6-3.  The scoreline is a bit deceptive, fairly close match but Serena did what she does, beat Sharapova.  Li Na advanced over the diminutive but competitive D. Cibulkova in three tough sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.  Glad to see Li Na advance into the final.  So, S. Williams vs. Li Na for the women’s title.

On the men’s side, K. Nishikori has withdrawn due to a groin injury.  WOW, after upsetting Federer (and upsetting me) Nishikori forced to give Djokovic a walkover into the final.  Rafael Nadal took care of M. Raonic, but not without dropping a set, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.  He will face Thomas Berdych tonight to earn the right to play Nole for the men’s title.  Have to expect we are in store for another Nadal – Djokovic battle (but one never knows…)

In “The Dance”, top seeds Arizona and Florida advanced while the 2014 Cinderella team, Dayton awaits after beating Stanford the night before last.  Florida will face Dayton and will determine if the clock strikes twelve and Cinderella goes home, or continues to dance!  Was a bit sad to see two west coast teams fall last night (San Diego State and UCLA).  OK, so check your brackets and see how you are doing.  I still have three correct in my final four, the exception being the Dukies, what a disappointing upset that was!

Later…

Well, to quote John McEnroe..”you cannot be serious”?  Now, Berdych has withdrawn giving Rafa a walkover.  So, Djokovic and Nadal advance to the final without hitting one single ball in a semifinal match.  Very disappointing…imagine how the fans felt who bought tickets!  Want to note that Roger Federer does not do “walkovers”.  Anyhow….the men’s final will be as expected…Rafa vs. Nole!
