Team USA advanced today into the round of sixteen at the World Cup inspite of a disappointing loss to the powerful team from Germany, 1-0. Team USA looked tired, Germany looked fresh, but thanks to a goal by Ronaldo, Portugal took care of Ghana 2-1 and Germany wins Group G and USA advances as well. The support and interest in this World Cup has been phenomenal, all the local bars and restaurants around me were packed as people took long lunches to watch the action and cheer on Team USA. My sponsor, Padriac’s had one of the very popular local radio stations, 680 The Fan broadcasting on site! Very cool!!
Would have loved it if we could have at least scored, (nothing like standing with your arms in the air and shouting “SCORE”) but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how you get there, what matters is that you do!! Way to go Team USA! No one gave them a shot at moving out of a very tough draw and they did it…USA! USA! Next up…likely a match with Belgium.
There was some tennis action today at Wimbledon as well…hard to keep up with it all as most of the focus today has been on Team USA getting it done. But that guy, Mr. Federer was in action and I always find a way to make time for watching Roger Federer. He took care of Gilles Muller of Lux (not to be confused with the German soccer player Muller who scored the lone goal in today’s game) in very convincing fashion, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. Fed served up 25 aces and looks locked and loaded to make a real run at this year’s Wimbledon title. Rafael Nadal avenged his 2012 loss to Lukas Rosol, dropping the first set, 4-6, then winning in four sets, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. Murray and Federer have both looked very sharp so far early on, Rafa and Djokovic have both struggled a tad. Non the less, it is all about getting through the early rounds and making it into the second week. So far, all of the Big Four are into the third round.
J. Tsonga came back to win the fifth set over Sam Querrey today, 14-12, the second five set match for Tsonga. Really great effort by Querrey, hated to see him go out. Isner won in three sets, young Nick Kyrgios upset Richard Gasquet in a five set match, coming back after dropping the first two sets..very impressive win. Nishikori and Roanic advanced as did the other Swiss guy, Stan Wawrinka, who won a four set match today.
Both Sharapova and Serena Williams cruised and could be headed for a quarterfinal meeting (still a ways to go!) and Ana Ivanovic was a two set winner today. The rains came late in the day but 28 of 33 scheduled matches were completed. Roger was on Centre Court (thank you, that is where he belongs!) and so the roof was closed midway through the second set and once it became “indoor tennis”, well Fed is still the best in the biz and the aces were plentiful.
Tomorrow, both Murray and Djokovic back in action.
Tiger Woods returned to golf action today at the Quicken Loans National in Bethesda, Maryland and had a bit of a rough go of it. He looked rusty, to be expected, but he did manage to birdie the final three holes and finished with a round of 74.
So, we take a rest…get ready to cheer on Team USA in the round of sixteen and continue to enjoy the daily tennis from London.
Over and out for now!
P.S. Apparently Mr. Federer was quite excited about the Swiss victory in World Cup action yesterday as he was doing a good bit of “tweeting” last evening!
