Tennis from down under continues…and the temperatures have fallen at last. They are enjoying seventies and eighties over the weekend and into next week (oh, how nice that sounds!). Yesterday while the temps were still high, Aussie fave Sam Stosur fell to Ana Ivanovic in three sets. Li Na overcame a rough start, dropping the first set 1-6 to win in three sets as well. Good..I would like to see Li Na go far in this tournament. Two of my “other faves”, up and comers Pospisil of Canada and #20 Janowicz, the Jerzy boy as I like to call him, are out of the tournament, Janowicz lost and Pospisil withdrew due to a back injury. Serena rolled but has withdrawn from the doubles competition with sister Venus as her partner, perhaps to save herself for the singles?
On the men’s side, two top seeds fell, Gasquet and Del Potro. Really hate to see Del Potro go out. Tonight’s session offers Murray, Nadal, and my guy, Mr. Federer. They have moved Fed back to Rod Laver Arena (thank you very much) and his match will be the second match in the night session. That means the DVR will be hard at work I am sure with the time difference?
Scheduled matchups are as follows: Nadal vs. Monfils (could be very interesting), Fed vs. Gabashvili (?), Tsonga vs. Simon (another good one), Murray vs. Feliciano Lopez, and D. Young (USA) vs. Nishikori.
NBA news..R. Rondo will return tonight for the Celtics as they host the Lakers. Kobe will not be taking the court but he was apparently visiting Boston College while in town and dropping in on some classes. Took some unsuspecting students by surprise! Pretty cool, but I am ready to see Kobe back in action on the basketball court!!
NFL on Sunday…AFC Championship and NFC Championship! First game you may have heard about, will feature a couple of guys named Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Peyton is attempting to become the third quarterback in history to play in two Super Bowls for two different teams. Brady and the Patriots stand in the way, (Brady is looking to become the first player to appear in six Super Bowls) but the game is in Denver. I am going with Manning and the Broncos!
Second game is no slouch..San Francisco vs. Seattle. I think this one is too hard to call but I am going to take Seattle!
In case you missed the Critics Choice Awards last night, the All Right, All Right, All Right freight train that is Matthew McConaughey and his award winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club continued!! Also, Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jared Leto, Mark Wahlburg, Twleve Years A Slave, Spike Jonze (best screenplay for Her, yes!) were among the winners. SAG Awards air on Saturday night on TNT. Keep on keeping on…..
