Texas A&M was tres impressive in their dominating win over South Carolina last night in Columbia, SC, 52-28. It was 38-21 at the half! Kenny Hill, the new QB now that Johnny “Football” Manziel is a Cleveland Brown was tremendous, passing for 511 yards in his debut. Johnny was “Johnny” but it certainly appears the Aggies are going to be just fine. This thrashing of Spurrier’s Gamecocks in the opener on their home field had to cause the SEC and especially the SEC East to sit up and take notice..as in Oh, my Gosh! Plus, always have to love the preseason College Football rankings…A&M #21, South Carolina #9. That will change in next week’s poll! Arizona State (#19) rolled over Webber 45-17 and #18 Ole Miss defeated Boise State in Atlanta 35-13. The Rebels got it going in the second half, the first half not so much. Now…tomorrow all kinds of big games on tap. You cannot go anywhere without hearing people talk about their team, the game…Auburn fans (vs. Arkansas), FSU fans (vs. Oklahoma State) and UGA fans (vs. Clemson) in Athens.
Well, FSU is the preseason #1, they have a very easy schedule and I expect them to defeat OK State. UGA vs. Clemson, I would love to see Clemson win (being a GT fan so go ACC) but gotta go with the Dawgs. Also, Auburn over Arkansas. GT has a nice cupcake game so expect them to do OK. Still not sure how the season will play out for the Jackets. Hope Thomas at QB will be successful, still think it was a shame to see Vad Lee go.
Now, with the madness of CFB opening weekend, there is still some tennis going on in NYC. Last night, Andy Murray won in three straight sets and looked much better than he did in his opening match (won in four sets). Eugenie Bouchard struggled and needed three sets to defeat Cirstea, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. The Williams sisters won a tough three set doubles match and Venus will return to play singes today. Serena will be off. So happy to see Venus playing this well. The Cinderella story ended for fifteen year old CeCe Bellis (from lovely San Francisco) as she lost to Diyas, 3-6, 6-0, 2-6.
Plenty of tennis action today and through the weekend and next week and also the next weekend. Most importantly, Mr. Federer will serve tonight…under the lights at Ashe Stadium. He will face a big serving young gun from Australia, Sam Groth and that match should get underway around 7:00 pm EST on ESPN2. Sharapova vs. Lisicki will follow.
Happy Labor Day weekend to everyone. I am going to enjoy watching Mr. Federer serve as I always do and catch as much college football as I can tomorrow!
Enjoy watching whatever is your preferred choice this weekend…plenty to choose from for sure. (Sure wish that darn theater near me would finish its renovations and open back up!)
Over and out!
