Interesting day at the French Open. First of all, the sun came out and the forecast for the second week of action is warmer temperatures and drier conditions. Good news for Nadal, maybe not for Federer, but we shall see! Nadal advanced over F. Fognini, 7 – 6, 6- 4, 6 – 4. Nadal still does not look “Nadal like” on the red clay at Roland Garros. Perhaps the match of the day was between thirty five year old Tommy Haas and American John Isner. Haas prevailed in a tough five setter, 7 – 5, 7 – 6, 4 – 6, 6 – 7, 10 – 8 (Isner just seems to always find himself in these long five set matches when there is no fifth set tie break?). To Isner’s credit, he came back from two sets down. To Haas’s credit, he prevailed! Way to go Tommy (the oldest guy in the tournament). Djokovic defeated up and comer Dimitrov, 6 – 2, 6 – 3, 6 -3 but he did have to call out the trainer for a sore shoulder. Expect him to be fine! Also advancing on the men’s side, Youzhny over Tipsarevic in three sets, Nishikori over B. Paire in four sets, and Wawrinka over Janowicz in four sets. Tomorrow, Roger Federer returns to action!!!
On the women’s side, Sharapova took care of Zheng in two sets, Azarenka needed three sets to prevail over Cornet of France, Kirilenko advanced in two sets, and American Sloane Stephens won in three sets (nice run here by the 17 year old). Two big upsets on the women’s side of the draw: Sam Stosur fell to J. Jankovic in three sets; American Jamie Hampton took out P. Kvitova in two sets, 6 – 1, 7 – 6. Very impressive win for the young American.
Until tomorrow…
