Two more upsets at Wimbledon on Friday…#2 Li Na went out in two tie break sets to 20 year old Czech player Strycova and #6 Berdych was ousted in three sets by M. Cilic, 7-6, 6-4, 7-6 (this one finished as darkness descended on the All England Club and Berdych was not happy!). So #2 on the Ladies side and #6 on the Men’s side bite the dust today. Very disappointed for Li Na, the 2014 Australian Champ who has now lost in the first round at the French Open and the third round at Wimbledon. As for Berdych, if he was in the way of Federer, then not too sad to see him out of there!
#1 seed Novak Djokovic won in three sets over G. Simone of France, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. Scary moment in the third set when Nole went down and appeared to suffer a left shoulder injury. The trainer and the doctor were out but Nole was able to continue after about a eight minute delay and after the match, he said he had an ultrasound and all was good. Will remain to be seen…he will have two days rest until manic Monday for the round of sixteen. He will face J. Tsonga on Monday. G. Dimitrov won a very entertaining match over Dolgopolov, 6-7, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. L. Hewitt fell in five sets to Jerzy Jankovic and Andy Murray cruised over Bautista-Agut (talented young Spaniard) 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. Again, Murray and Federer have looked really good so far, Fed takes the court tomorrow as does Nadal (both on Centre Court but rain is in the forecast). Both Nadal and Djokovic have struggled just a bid in week one. The other Swiss guy, Wawrinka advanced today as did K. Anderson over Fognini in five sets. (Celebrity update: Ricky Gervais was on hand to cheer on Andy Murray, he has tweeted out his support of Murray).
Perhaps the best match of the day took place between two former Wimbledon champs, Venus Williams and P. Kvitova. Kvitova prevailed in three sets, 5-7, 7-6, 7-5. Her only break of the match occured in the final set when she broke Venus and then served it out. This was one of the best women’s tennis matches (especially from a serving standpoint) I have seen in years. Really sad to see Venus go out but congrats to Kvitova. Hard to have to see one of these gals “lose” today. C. Wozniacki seems to be doing really well after her broken engagement and her first round exit in Paris, and she is playing some of her best tennis as she moved on into the round of sixteen today with her win.
Tomorrow’s action will feature Nadal and Federer, Sharapova and Serena Williams. There is no action on the middle Sunday at Wimbledon and then we move to “Manic Monday”, the round of sixteen. Here’s to a great second week of tennis in London.
World Cup action gets underway again tomorrow…hard to keep up with the soccer craze and all the Wimbledon action!
Meanwhile, Tiger Woods finished up his two rounds at +7 and missed the cut at the Quicken Loans Tournament…not that surprising since it is his first tournament after back surgery and rehab. Still, really want to see Tiger back in the mix…not the same without him!
Enjoy your Friday night!
