Updates from tennis down under

Action from Australia last evening/early this morning saw players advance into the semifinals.  Sharapova easily advanced in two sets 6 – 2, 6 – 2.  Li Na was a “surprise” winner over world #4 Radwanska in straight sets, 7 – 5, 6 – 3.  #1 Djokovic needed four sets to defeat Berdych and in perhaps the best match, David Ferrer came back from two sets down to defeat fellow Spaniard Almagro in a thrilling five set match, 4 – 6, 4 – 6, 7 – 6, 7- 6, 6 -2 as Almagro seemed to just run out of steam.

Tonight’s action will feature 2 Roger Federer in his record setting 35th straight Grand Slam quarterfinals against 7 Tsonga.  This could be a tricky match for the Swiss maestro.  He lost a couple of times to Tsonga in 2011 and they did not really face each other in 2012.  Tsonga has dropped fifteen pounds and is always flamboyant and entertaining.  Still, look for Federer to advance to the semifinals where he will likely meet Andy Murray (Murray also in action tonight).

Young American Sloane Stephens will take on her mentor Serena Williams.  This should be quite a barometer for her as far as how much she has progressed in the tennis world this year.  Also #1 Azarenka in action.
