Wednesday winners and losers (French Open)

Play continued on Wednesday in Paris at the French Open once the rain subsided…winners and losers were pretty much as expected.  Nadal wore down David Ferrer, dropping the first set, 4-6 buy then pouring it on his fellow countryman, 6-4, 6-0, 6-1.  Always wonder when someone gets bageled this deep in the tournament?  Anyhow, no surprise as this is Rafa’s place.  Still not pulling for him to win..he would reach Grand Slam number 14, tie Pete Sampras and get too close for comfort to Roger Federer’s 17.  Hey, I am all about Roger, what can I say?  In the other men’s quarterfinal, Andy Murray survived a comeback from the entertaining but underachieving G. Monfils of France in five sets, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6. 1-6 (that is eerily odd) and then 6-0.  Again, that bagel set..in a quarterfinal at a Major?  Disappointing for the French crowd and Monfils.  He is so talented but does not seem to ever really live up to his true potential.  Meanwhile, Andy looks healthy and will face Nadal in the semifinals.  Djokovic will face Gulbis (that guy who upset Fed in five sets but looks like he is a serious contender), but likely not going to beat Nole!

On the women’s side..so HAPPY to see Andrea Petkovic advance in straight sets over S. Errani  6-2, 6-2.  She is delightful, and talented, and has come back from a rash of injuries so as of right now..I am pulling for her.  She will face #4 S. Halep who defeated Kuznetsova, 6-2, 6-2.  How about that..identical scores in today’s women’s quarters.  Maria Sharapova, the favorite ( but not my favorite) will face #18 Eugenie Bouchard of Canada.  Bouchard is a real up and comer, but has a bit of that same personality as Sharapova, all business and not a warm and fuzzy kind of gal.  There is nothing wrong with being good, even great, and being nice and friendly with your competitors, is there?  Again, look at Mr. Federer!  OK, prediction time…definitely think it will be Nadal vs. Djokovic and hope Nole gets his first French Open title when all is said and done.  On the women’s side…just don’t know.  I am pulling for Petkovic, then Halep, then Bouchard, and last, Sharapova.
