Weekend sports wrap up, 10/28/13

Hey guys!  Been off the grid (literally, hosting issues) so back with you after quite a weekend in sports!  Boston and St. Louis are 2-2 with game five tonight from St. Louis.  Game three had the winning run scored on a player interference call on the Sox’ third baseman, one of the most bizarre plays in World Series’ history.  College Football was not quite so crazy this past weekend after the past two weekends  (ie. Shake up Saturday, and SEC Carnage Saturday) but there were some interesting results…most notably a slight change in the BCS Poll as a result.

AP Poll: 1 Alabama (55), 2 Oregon (3), 3 FSU (2), 4 Ohio State, 5 Baylor, 6 Stanford, 7 Miami, 8 Auburn, 9 Clemson, and 10 Missouri.

USA Today Coaches Poll: 1 Alabama (56), 2 Oregon (6), 3 FSU, 4 Ohio State, 5 Baylor, 6 Miami, 7 Stanford (do not get this, Miami barely survives unranked Wake Forest, Stanford beats a ranked Oregon State team?), 8 Clemson, 9 Oklahoma, and 10 Missouri.

BCS Poll: 1 Alabama, 2 Oregon (Ducks jump the Noles after beating then 12th ranked UCLA!), 3 FSU, 4 Ohio State, 5 Stanford(now that is more like it!), 6 Baylor, 7 Miami,  8 Clemson, 9 Missouri, and 10 Oklahoma.

So, Clemson still hanging in after the previous week’s thrashing by FSU.  Missouri does not fall too badly after blowing a lead and losing to South Carolina in OT at home.  Do not get ranking Miami ahead of Stanford in the Coaches Poll.  Virginia Tech and Nebraska both drop from the top twenty five all the way around.  Virginia Tech fell to Duke, 13 – 10 and just goes to show on any given day…

We have a ways to go…big game this coming weekend between 3FSU and 7 Miami in Tallahassee.  Going to be very interesting given all the history in this series…you guys all remember…wide right, oh, no…wide left.  Anyhow, say FSU wins and gives Miami their first loss.  Miami still plays VT in regular season so one would think the winner of that game would win the Coastal Division of the ACC and then play FSU in the ACC Championship game.  Alabama appears to be headed for securing the SEC West, but they do have LSU ahead and the Iron Bowl with Auburn (anything can happen in a rivalry game and especially that one!)  The SEC East is a bit more confusing after the Missouri loss.  Will it be South Carolina?  Wait, they lost to UGA.  But UGA lost to Missouri.  So, this is not decided yet folks.  And do not sleep on Auburn.  In the Pac 12, Stanford and Oregon will play AT Stanford on November 7th.  That is the game to circle on your calendar.  With the current BCS system, that game could decide who does in fact play in the title game.  Of course, Oregon will still have to play their rivalry game, Oregon State.  And, then perhaps UCLA again in the Pac 12 Championship game, depending on the outcome of the game with Stanford.  So, it boils down to, we don’t know anything just yet.  Ohio State is on the outside looking in, weak schedule so all they can do it try and pile up style points and look for #1, #2, and #3 to stumble.  And then there is Baylor, poised at #6, just waiting and watching as they roll up huge point totals and amazing statistics.

Everyone seems to want an Alabama vs. FSU title game.  Why is there such disrespect for west coast college football?  The Pac 12 could certainly be considered the best conference in the county, from top to bottom.  What Oregon does is phenomenal.  Stanford seems more like the “Alabama of the west coast” as far as style of play, athletes, and defense.  But Oregon’s defense is actually very good.  So, my vote is for either FSU vs. Oregon, or Alabama vs. Oregon.  Would like to say Stanford but I fear that loss at Utah has cost them a shot at the National Title game.  Non the less, the games will continue through November and then we will see how it all shakes out.

Meanwhile, in tennis news, my hero, Roger Federer fell to J. Martin Del Potro in a rematch of last year’s final at the Swiss Indoors Tournament, 6 – 7, 6 – 2, 4 – 6.  If only Fed could have won that first set tie breaker.  Well, it does appear Roger will indeed make the year end tournament in London.  It is on to Paris this week for the Masters 1000 and then next week, the final eight will convene in the arena in London!

Over and out for now!
