I am so excited, I just can’t stand it! It will be an “all Swiss” final! Federer vs. Wawrinka tomorrow for the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 tennis tournament title! Roger has never won this title (one of the few he has yet to conquer) and the last (and I believe only) time Wawrinka defeated his good buddy and fellow countryman, Federer, was at this very event in 2009. Roger had just gotten married and was sort of on his “honeymoon”. Anyhow, today Wawrinka defeated David Ferrer, 6-1, 7-6 in what was a commanding performance by Stan the Man! Roger defeated Djokovic, 7-5, 6-2, ending Nole’s string of fifteen straight wins. Djokovic lives in Monte Carlo (you know, no taxes) and it is a bit of a hometown tournament for him. He won this event last year and was looking to make it six Masters 1000 titles in a row. He suffered a right wrist injury, (sometime, no one knows exactly when) and had his forearm wrapped. It did not seem to be bothering him early on in the match, as both players seemed in prime form. Roger looked much better than he did yesterday in what was a very sloppy win over Tsonga. Djokovic had an opportunity at 5-4, with Federer serving at 15-40 and Federer pulled it out to go 5-5. From that point on, Nole appeared to wilt somewhat and Fed won the first set 7-5. After that, it was the runaway freight train that is the Roger Federer we all know and love. So happy to see Roger make it to the final…should be really interesting match tomorrow. If Roger wins, he will move to #3 in the world. (Stan is currently #3, Roger #4) Wawrinka is a much different player these days so that 13-1 record Fed holds in wins over him likely goes out the door. Should be a very tough, competitive, entertaining match for sure.
Sad to hear that after the match, Djokovic confirmed that he does indeed have an injury that will render him unable to play for awhile. When asked how long, his response..”I don’t know”. That is not good news for tennis fans!
Until tomorrow!
