The tennis gods smiled today as Roger Federer rallied to defeat J. Martin Del Potro in three terrific sets, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 at the Year End Finals in London. Everything was on the line in this match for both players, but perhaps more so for Federer who has suffered through a really disappointing subpar year. The winner would advance into the semifinals (to face Nadal) and Roger needed this victory for his confidence as he has begun to play much better in the past few weeks. He still shows some lapses in big moments but to be able to rally and pull out this victory was huge for Roger. This is his 12th consecutive appearance at the event (one must finish in the top 8 to be invited to the party), his 11th semifinal appearance and he is a 6 time champion (a record). The final four will be Djokovic vs. Wawrinka (two Swiss guys at the party this year!) and a yet another match up between what is without question the defining tennis rivalry of it’s generation…Roger vs. Rafa. (No more need be said). Nadal has secured the year end number one ranking but to play well and win would be great for Roger heading into the off season and then 2014.
Really happy to see Roger pull this win out this morning…After all, what would a year end tennis party be like without Mr. Federer in attendance?
