Last day of NFL regular season play

Tomorrow (Sunday) will mark the final day of the regular season in the NFL.  Still up for grabs, first round byes, home field advantage, and divisional titles!

Still a lot to play for so let take a look at what we have in store for us tomorrow:

Tampa Bay visits Atlanta, who has already clinched the number 1 seed in NFC.  Will Matt Ryan and company go after it, will they play, if so far how much of the game.  Remains to be seen!

Chicago vs. Detroit, can Megatron (Calvin Johnson) surpass 2000 receiving yards?  Will Chicago make the playoffs?

Philadelphia vs. Eli Manning and the New York Giants.  New York must win and await the outcome of other games, specifically Dallas vs. Washington (SNF).

Other early games: Baltimore at Cincinnati, NY Jets at Buffalo, Houston at Indy, Carolina at New Orleans and Cleveland at Pittsburgh.

Late day games feature Kansas City visiting Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.  The Broncos have clinched the AFC west so will Peyton play?

Also, Green Bay at Minnesota, both teams in the playoffs; Miami at New England; Oakland at San Diego and Arizona at San Francisco.  San Francisco must win now to clinch the division.  If they lose and Seattle defeats St. Louis, Seattle wins the division.

Then the big one on SNF: Dallas at Washington.  Washington wins the division if they defeat Dallas.  The Cowboys must win or they stay home.

Last day, and still much to be decided!

One bowl final, a tale of two weathers

One bowl final in today as Rice easily defeats Air Force, 33 – 14 in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas.  Meanwhile, two bowl games in progress, one on the East coast and the other on the west coast.  A tale of two different weather conditions!

In the Bronx, NY, the weather outside is frightful at 33 degrees with strong snow flurries for the New Era Pin Stripe Bowl and in the 3rd quarter, Syracuse leads West Virginia, 38 – 14.

Out in the beautiful bay area, in San Francisco, The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl has Arizona State leading Navy, 55 – 14 in the 3rd quarter.

So far, not a great day for the academies (at least as far as winning bowls, great day in that they are there!).

Final scores to follow later, two more bowl games coming up as well.

Duke survives!

1 Duke found themselves in a bit of a struggle this afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium with Santa Clara, tied 45 – 45 in the first half.  Duke went on one of their patented “Duke runs” and rolled on to a 90 – 77 victory to remain undefeated!  Seth Curry had 31 points and Mason Plumlee added 22 points to seal the win for the Dukies.

Kobe’s streak comes to an end…

Kobe Bryant’s streak of 10 consecutive games with 30+ points came to an end last night in LA.  But that is OK, he was on the bench for the 4th period along side Steve Nash and Dwight Howard as the surging Lakers blew out the Portland Trailblazers, 104 – 87.

Elsewhere, the other LA team, the Clippers, extended their consecutive winning streak to 16 (!) with a 116 – 114 victory over Utah.

A couple of Friday night finals!

Texas Tech returned an interception to the twenty and kicked a game winning field goal with time expiring to cap a thrilling come from behind victory over Minnesota in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, 34 – 31.

In College Basketball, UCLA pulled off the upset over 7 Missouri in OT, 97 – 94.

Things a bit “testy” in Houston

The final bowl game for today is at halftime in Houston, the Meineke Car Care Bowl between Texas Tech and Minnesota.  Texas Tech leads 24 – 17.   Things have been a little “testy” between the two teams in the first half, with 11 penalties for over 120 yards.  Stay tuned, second half coming up.  Back tomorrow with final score!

Pretty good college basketball game on ESPN2 as well, 7 Missouri in a battle with UCLA, all tied up at halftime 47 – 47.

Until tomorrow…

Early Saturday Bowl preview

Saturday will offer five College Football games!  First up is the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl from Fort Worth, Texas.  This game is on at 11:45 am EST and will feature Rice vs. Air Force.  (Go Air Force!)

3:15 pm EST: New Era Pinstripe Bowl from Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY  West Virginia vs. Syracuse   (Two departing Big East teams will face off)

4:00 pm EST: Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl from San Francisco, CA  (great city!!)  Navy vs. Arizona State  Go Navy!  Arizona State will be the favorite, but never hurts to pull for the academies!

6:45 pm EST: Valero Alamo Bowl from San Antonio, Texas  23 Texas takes on 13 Oregon State  This should be the premier match up of the day.  This game is marred by a bit of unsettling news coming out of San Antonio.  Two Texas players, QB Case McCoy (younger brother of Colt McCoy) and LB Jordan Hicks have been sent home and will not play as they reportedly missed curfew.  In addition, two unnamed Texas players are under investigation for an alleged sexual assault incident.  I want to repeat, this is an alleged assault, no charges have been filed.  Still, not a pretty picture coming out of San Antonio.

Finally, at 10:15 pm EST: Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl from Tempe, Arizona  TCU faces off against Michigan State.

Hold on folks, things are heating up as we head towards New Years eve, New Years Day and the week after leading up to the January 7th BCS Championship Game!

Sean Payton to stay in New Orleans

Word is that the New Orleans Saints and Coach Sean Payton (currently serving one year suspension for bounty program infractions) have agreed in theory to a five year contract extension.  Good for them, I guess.  Not a big fan of Sean Payton.  Love Drew Brees, think Sean Payton is kind of ‘snarky”.  He is one heck of a coach.  What else can I say?  Go Falcons!

Virginia Tech avoids losing record…

Virginia Tech avoids a losing record by defeating Rutgers in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, Florida, 13 – 10 in OT.  The Virginia Tech defense kept them afloat in spite of a rather dismal offensive performance and a less than stellar outing for QB Logan Thomas.  Lucky for VT to survive and win this game in OT.  Still, guess as a GT fan I have to be a fan of the victory for the ACC!

Next up Meinkeke Car Care Bowl – Minnesota vs. Texas Tech.
