Virginia Tech avoids losing record…

Virginia Tech avoids a losing record by defeating Rutgers in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, Florida, 13 – 10 in OT.  The Virginia Tech defense kept them afloat in spite of a rather dismal offensive performance and a less than stellar outing for QB Logan Thomas.  Lucky for VT to survive and win this game in OT.  Still, guess as a GT fan I have to be a fan of the victory for the ACC!

Next up Meinkeke Car Care Bowl – Minnesota vs. Texas Tech.

Switching to NBA, Kobe back in action

Briefly switching from bowl mania to the NBA, Kobe and the Lakers are back in action tonight vs. the Portland Trailblazers at the Staples Center.  Don’t know if any of you are aware it but Kobe takes a helicopter into downtown LA from his home when the Lakers are in action at the Staples Center.  It is cool.  Face if, if you could do it, you would too.  It really is just COOL!

Kind of like we would all be in Los Cabos, Mexico right now if we could (for those of you who are, well done!)

Finally, a final in Shreveport

The Shreveport Independence Bowl has come to an end, it seemed to last a really long time (?), and Ohio has won handily over Louisiana-Monroe, 45 – 14.  Very impressive performance on both offense and defense by the Bobcats!

Next up, Russell Athletic Bowl from Orlando, FL, featuring Rutgers vs. Virginia Tech.

Love You, Mean It/Whitney

I gotta say, I love you, mean it when it comes to this show.  I DVR it because it comes on Wednesdays at 10:30 pm EST on E Channel and well, we all know I have developed a huge crush on Nashville, which comes on Wednesday’s at 10:00 pm EST on ABC.  So, we do what we must, we DVR and watch them both.  I think Whitney Cummings is so funny on this show, love her sitcom Whitney as well, but I just find her so fresh and uninhibited in her new “talk show”.   Shush…don’t tell anyone (wink!), but I think Whitney is funnier than her BFF Chelsea.  Love you, mean it/Whitney, from me to you!

Bad news for tennis fans (Rafael Nadal)

Not good news for tennis fans.  Rafael Nadal who has not played since June when he lost in five sets to Lukas Rosel at Wimbledon will not play in the Australian Open in January due to a stomach virus.

He had already been forced to pull out of an exhibition in Abu Dhabi that he was scheduled to participate in and would mark his return to tennis action.

Now, today, he has announced he will not be able to play in Australia, the Open taking place January 14 – 27, 2013.  The knee is doing fine but the virus has left him weak and unable to practice and properly prepare.

This is a shame.  Not good news for tennis fans and Rafa.

How about some hefty fines…

A couple of hefty fines handed down in the NFL and the NBA.  Ed Reed of the Baltimore Ravens has been fined $55K for his hit on Giant’s WR Victor Cruz in last Sunday’s game.  No suspension.

Lakers Dwight Howard has been hit with a $35K fine for his flagrant two foul in the loss to Denver a couple of night’s ago.

The leagues are just doing their job, but I doubt either of these two will miss the $$.  Ed Reed has said he is making a conscious effort to think about how he hits when playing in light of the serious stance on helmet to helmet hits and concussion issues.

Holiday Bowl final

Baylor soared to victory over UCLA last night in the Holiday Bowl from beautiful San Diego, CA, 49 – 26.  Baylor QB Nick Florence surpassed RG III for most single season passing yards.  The Baylor defense came up big as well, sacking UCLA QB Brett Hundley six times.  I knew there would be a lot of scoring in this game but did not expect Baylor to dominate as they did.  I will say one thing for UCLA, love the uniforms!  Always have, the gold pants with the sky blue jerseys, looking good.

OK, three bowl games today, five on Saturday!!

Today at 2:00 pm EST: Shreveport Holiday Bowl, Ohio vs. Louisiana-Monroe.

5:30 pm EST: Russell Athletic Bowl from Orlando, Florida, Rutgers vs. Virginia Tech.  Should be interesting to see how VT plays in this bowl after a very disappointing year.

9:00 pm EST: Meineke Car Care Bowl (Houston, TX), Minnesota vs. Texas Tech (minus former head coach Tommy Tuberville).

All games on ESPN!

Not to be for Duke…

Final from the Belk Bowl: Great effort but not to be for Duke as they fall to Cincinnati, 48 – 34.  Defense by Cincinnati, forcing critical turnovers was the deciding factor and they achieve another ten win season.  Congrats to both teams on a great effort and very entertaining game.  Was hoping for Duke, but Cincinnati was just too good.
