Lakers win!!!

Alright!!  Lakers win last night, albeit over the 3 win Washington Wizards, 102 – 96.  They looked good for three periods and then in the 4th, as they have done so often, let their rhythm slip away from then and the game got close.  None the less, Kobe scored 30 on a bit of an off night, rookie Jordie Meeks was outstanding and Dwight was Dwight.  Next up for the Lakers is the 76ers in Philly on Sunday.

Carmelo Anthony will miss the Knicks next game with a sprained ankle he suffered in the last period during the win over LA in Madison Square Garden.

Couple of bowl games on today, bowl mania kicks off…and Showdown in the NFL this Sunday.

Back later to preview that exciting action!

Tragedy in America…

This isn’t sports, it isn’t pop culture, it is unfortunately tragic news today in America.  You simply can’t  NOT write something about what happened today at an elementary school today in Newborn, Connecticut.  A twenty year old male took out his rage and frustration at Sandy Hook Elementary School and killed twenty six people.  Twenty of the dead are children, all between the ages of five and ten.  (Close your eyes and think about this, it is so horrific!)  The remaining six casualties were adults.  Prayers and thoughts go out to everyone in this community.  When does it end????

The news keeps getting worse; twenty seven now dead in this shooting rampage.

Roger Federer news…

It is always a good thing when there is Roger Federer news!  Mr. Federer is in South America on the “Gillette Federer Tour” boosting his bank account and playing a round of scheduled exhibition matches around the globe.  It pays to have great sponsors!  He defeated Tommy Haas in Brazil in two sets.  He next heads to Argentina where he will play Juan Martin Del Potro.  Roger had the pleasure of meeting soccer great, Pele, and the two exchanged mementos.  Roger received an autographed World Cup jersey from Pele, and he returned the favor with an autographed Wilson tennis racquet.

It is great to be Roger Federer!

Friday College Football News…

Reportedly Al Golden has decided to stay at Miami, turning down the head coaching position at the University of Wisconsin.  This is interesting given the cloud that continues to hand over the Miami program, but they do have a ton of talent coming back and could certainly be very, very good next year.

University of North Carolina running back Giovani Bernard is leaving for the NFL, forgoing his remaining two years of eligibility.

It is sad but true, Georgia Tech’s leading receiver Jeff Greene is no longer a part of the program.  His high school coach puts the blame on Greene, not the school or coaching staff, indicating that they had bent over backwards to help him.  He further calls Greene “a little selfish”.  Now GT limps into their bowl match up with USC minus two starting receivers from their start of the year roster.

Finally, FSU offensive coordinator Eddie Gran is leaving to join Tommy (I think I will leave before my steak arrives) Tuberville for the same position at the University of Cincinnati.

Back later…

Lakers fall to Knicks in the Garden…

The New York Knicks are now 17 – 5 and hot on the heels of Miami in the East as they defeat the Lakers 116 – 107  in Madison Square Garden.  Anthony went out in the fourth with an injury and the Lakers managed to pull to within 7 points, but the Knicks continued to get second and third chance opportunities at the basket thanks to Tyson Chandler and the Lakers lose again.  Kobe was superb, finishing with 31 points, one shot that was simply put, other worldly.  Howard was better than adequate at the free throw line, but still, a loss.  The Knicks are without Amare Stoudemire but appear to be real contenders this year.  Very hard to really judge the Lakers at this point, in spite of all the negative talk.  They need Pau Gasol, Steve Nash and Steve Blake.  Steve Nash expects to return to practice next week and play in a week as well.  Another loss, but the verdict is still out, wait until the entire cast returns.

On TNF, at the end of the 3rd quarter, Cincinnati leads Philadelphia, 24 – 13.  Another turnover plagued performance by the Eagles (four so far).  Final update tomorrow…

Final score: Cincinnati 34 – Philadelphia 13 (five turnovers for the Eagles)

Big East exit???

Seven non Catholic, non FBS schools, De Paul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Villanova are considering leaving the Big East in basketball.  Their primary concern is that they maintain their NCAA automatic berth status, whatever steps they take.  WOW!  What is happening, are we even going to recognize the leagues once all of this jumping around in both football and basketball ends?  Will it ever end??

Something we can all make sense of all, TNF:  Philadelphia Eagles (without Vick) vs. Cincinnati Bengals on NFL Channel.

Golden Globe Nominations are out…

The Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning.  Interesting!  The movies nominated in the Drama category were: Argo (yes!), Lincoln, Life of Pi, Zero Dark Thirty, and Django Unchained.  A couple of these movies have not yet come out, but are on their way, ie. Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty (with the wonderful Jessica Chastain).  Really pulling for Argo!  It is the only one of these I have seen so far.

Comedy/Musical Category: Les Miserables, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (on Demand now), Moonrise Kingdom, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, and Silver Linings Playbook.  Have to admit, I have not seen any of these yet, but I really want to see Silver Linings Playbook.  I have heard nothing but great things about it.

Also of note, Ben Affleck did not receive a nod as actor for Argo.  WOW, really?  Both Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence of Silver Linings Playbook were nominated in their respective categories.

OK, next post will be about sports, I promise…
