THE match of the day from Madrid..Nishikori over Ferrer!

THE match of the day was the semifinal match between K. Nishikori and D. Ferrer from the Madrid Open today!  It was a GREAT match with Nishikori winning in three incredible sets, 7-6, 5-7,  (could have and maybe should have won the match in this second set), 6 – 3.  Nishikori had nine match points, all of them resulting in NOT!  It was only on match point number 10 in the third set that Nishikori came through for the amazing win over Ferrer on clay in Spain on David’s home turf.  K. Nishikori has received criticism in the past for caving when the going got tough…today he did not!  His serve was clutch when he needed it, especially in the final game in set three which lasted almost fifteen minutes.  It is very difficult to defeat D. Ferrer on clay, especially on clay with home court advantage, but Nishikori got it done and will advance to the final tomorrow…lucky guy…he gets that other Spaniard…Rafael Nadal!  Nadal made short work of fellow Spaniard Bautista-Agut (26 years old), 6-4, 6-3.  So much for the “Nadal malaise”.  It seems to have ended.  Ferrer beat Nadal on clay in the last tournament in Monte Carlo but it will be K. Nishikori of Japan who gets the opportunity to upend the “King of Clay” in tomorrow’s final from Madrid.

On the women’s side. Sharapova took care of A. Radwanska, 6-1, 6-4.  Disappointing performance for A. Radwanska, always knocking on the door it seems but not quite hard enough.  Maria’s power just too much and with Serena out, it seems Sharapova is headed for her second title in a row (winning at Stuttgart last week).  Standing in her way. S. Halep who took out Kvitova in three sets, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.  Kvitova is a tremendously talented player, but she runs so hot and cold.  She had over 60+ unforced errors in this match.  Halep is deceptive so tomorrow could be interesting, or it could be all Sharapova.  I was pulling for Radwanska (I do not pull for Sharapova ever) so I am disappointed in today’s results.

Over at The Players from TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, M. Kaymer continued to hold the lead until the final hole and finished the day at -12, tied for the lead with the young gun from Texas, Jordan Spieth.  Sergio Garcia (who had one fine round of golf today) along with John Senden find themselves tied for second at -9 and George McNeill, Gary Woodland, and Matt Jones are at -8 heading into the final round tomorrow.  Other notables…Rory Mcilroy and Adam Scott both at -3.  Rickie Fowler had a disastrous day, finishing at +5.  I still say he should have kept the long hair!!

So tomorrow, tennis finals from Madrid (minus the one that really matters, Roger Federer) and final round of golf from The Players (minus Tiger Woods, defending champion).  A bit anti-climatic for me personally!  Otherwise…enjoy!

The Players…day two

The Players Championship from TPC Sawgrass (Jax, been there, lived there) day two completed and the leaderboard is…..Martin Kaymer still in the lead at -12.  He is followed by the young sensation from Texas, Jordan Spieth at -11.  After that…Henley at -8, then J. Rose, Lee Westwood and Jim Furyk at -6.  The cut…Even Par.  Lefty (Mickelson)  just misses, finishing at +1.  Rory Mcilroy and Adam Scott survive, both at Even Par!  Others…Zach Johnson and Graeme McDowell at -4, Matt Kuchar and Dustin Johnson at -2 and Bubba (Watson that is!) at -3.  So this is how things stand heading into the weekend at The Players.  Still wish Tiger was there!

Tennis action from Madrid Open.  Maria Sharapova over Li Na in three tough sets, the second set going to a tie break and Maria dropping the first set but sealing the deal with a third set victory.  Darn…I was pulling for Li Na.  Radwanska looked vulnerable but managed to pull out a three set victory over C. Garcia of France, wow, she played a gutsy match but Aggie is just a human backboard!  Serena Williams withdrew due to a thigh injury, giving Kvitova a walkover win…so who wins this now?  Sharapova is looking really good, I hate to say, but she looks like the one to beat.  Ivanovic fell, still got A. Radwanska in there.  She will meet Sharapova in the semifinal!  Go Aggie!

On the men’s side…Rafa looks like he is on his way to another clay court title.  He won in two sets over T. Berdych, 6-4, 6-2.  David Ferrer advanced, as did K. Nishikori over the handsome F. Lopez of Spain in two sets.  No Federer, no Djokovic, and no Wawrinka!  Murray a disappointment with his loss as well.  Have to say Nadal looks like the favorite on the men’s side.  Wonder what Fed is going to do as far as Rome next week?  May be a bit too soon to return to the tour after the birth of Leo and Lenny, but he does need to get in another clay court event before the French Open.  If not in Rome, perhaps one of the smaller events prior?

NFL draft last night…number one pick..Jadeveon Clowney out of South Carolina by the Texans!  Come on people..no surprise here.  Perhaps a surprise to some…Johnny “Football” Manziel did not go until the 22nd pick…to the Cleveland Browns!  Almost seemed like I was watching Draft Day the movie all over again!!  Think the Browns got a great draft pick at #22!!

OK, ate dinner at my favorite Mediterranean Restaurant, enjoyed good food and conversation..now time to kick back and watch Unforgettable on CBS!  Have a great Friday night!  Later…

This is tennis without Federer and golf without Tiger…

Tennis without Roger Federer, as the Madrid Open continues and Mr. Federer is home with his wife, twin daughters and just arrived twin boys.  Meanwhile, golf got underway from TPC Sawgrass with Tiger Woods MIA due to his recovery from back surgery.

Madrid Open…Nadal advances in two easy sets, D. Ferrer over John Isner in two sets, T. Berdych over G. Dimitrov in three sets, K. Nishikori over M. Raonic in two sets, and gasp, Andy Murray loses again, this time to S. Giraldo in straight sets!  Giraldo was 0-19 against top ten player prior to today.  The woes for Murray continue while Nadal looks poised to win this tournament..a it premature I know but still, who is going to stop him.  Djokovic is out with injury and Stan Wawrinka made an unexpected early exit.  Guess we shall see, after all D. Ferrer did beat him in Monte Carlo on clay.

On the women’s side: Radwanska won in two sets, Sharapova over Stosur in two sets (I thought this would be closer), Kvitova and Serena won in two set matches, Lisicki and Li Na needed three sets to advance and Garcia upset S. Errani.  Looks like Serena if she is healthy?  I am pulling for Li Na/A. Radwanska!

Day one of the Players Championship got underway and the leaderboard looks like, well it looks like this: M. Kaymer -9,  R. Henley -7, Sang-Moon Bae -6, Lee Westwood, Fdez-Castano, Gary Woodland, Jordan Spieth and Brian Stuard at -5.  Rory Mcilroy is at -2, Zach Johnson and Bubba Watson are both at -3 and Lefty (Mickelson) is at +3.  I know it is only day one, but gotta say, not really rocking my world.

OK…hopefully the golf will get a bit more exciting and the tennis as well!

It’s Wednesday…Surviving “Paradise” day..time to…do that thing we do!

It is Wednesday folks, Surviving “Paradise” day and time to do that thing we do…promote my book Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver.  Follow a southern woman who relocates to a new town full of excitement only to be met by a ridiculous set of people and circumstances (in southwest Florida!).  Check it out at Amazon.com for $8.99 in paperback and $3.03 in kindle edition.  It is also available at Barnes and Noble nook for $4.99!Surviving Paradise

Moving on…Nashville airs tonight on ABC at 10:00 pm EST and will offer a very special episode…including a concert for the military!  I fully expect it to continue unveiling it’s current state of drama as well.  I am sensing a Deacon/Rayna hookup before this season ends?  We shall see!

In tennis action today at the Madrid Open..Rafa made his first appearance and dispatched of J. Monaco, 6-1, 6-0…so much for concern over Rafa at this time!  Radwanska struggled to a tough three set victory over Kuznetsova, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6.  Serena Williams took the court today for the first time at this event and rolled to a dominant win.  Murray is currently locked in a tough three set match with N. Almagro.  Still not quite the enthusiastic viewing I was hoping for personally…what with Federer back in Switzerland tending to the birth of his second set of twins and fellow Swiss Stan “the man” Wawrinka going out yesterday.  Djokovic also sitting this one out due to wrist injury.  Still all in all, could be a good tourney..maybe Nadal vs. Murray or perhaps a surprise?

Later..

Big upset at Madrid..Wawrinka falls

Big upset today at Madrid as Stan Wawrinka falls to D.Thiem of Austria in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 4-6.  Did not see this coming!  Stan has been up and down since winning the Australian Open, his first Grand Slam.  He was wonderful at the first Swiss Davis Cup match but then faltered after.  Saw him lose at Indian Wells to Kevin Anderson…and then he continued to struggle in Miami.  He was not on his game at the next Swiss Davis Cup match but came through in the fourth rubber match to allow Federer to save the day in the fifth rubber match.  Maybe he was distracted by the news out of Switzerland today that Roger and Mirka are celebrating the birth of their second sets of twins, this time twin boys..Leo and Lenny.  Gee, two sets of twins!  Anyhow, I expected Stan to perform better in Madrid after beating Federer in three sets in the final at Monte Carlo.  So…that leaves Rafa (who has struggled of late, and will be on court tomorrow), and who else?  Ferrer, and perhaps an  opportunity for some one unexpected…Nishikori, Dimitrov, someone?  (Remember, Djokovic is also out with his wrist injury)  OK…just keeping you informed!

Mr. Federer to serve..not at Madrid Open! (Twin boys for Fed!)

“Mr. Federer to serve” will not be music to our ears at the Madrid Open!  Bummer!  Roger announced yesterday that he was withdrawing from the tournament to spend time with the family as he and Mirka await the birth of their third child ( have four year old twins and Mirka is pregnant and due any day??).  Really bummed but have to respect Roger, what a great guy and husband..not to mention the GOAT !!!  Disappointed to not see him in action this week, especially with Djokovic withdrawing as well due to his wrist/arm injury.  Still, right move for this classy champion.  Must wonder if this means no Federer in Rome next week as well.  Really hope to see him at Roland Garros for the French Open.

So, we have Nadal and Wawrinka in action and perhaps a final between these two in store for us this week?  Will wait and see.  I will enjoy the action, but not with the same passion I would have if Federer was playing.

Lot’s of great action taking place…live action airs on Tennis Channel starting at about 5:00 am EST and continues until 4:00/5:00 pm EST.  It is great to watch, just not the same for me, personally!

Did you all catch Peyton Manning on Letterman last night?  Gee, the man, the athlete, the legend, the class act, what more can you say?  Great show, Shailene Woodley also on with a great movie coming out in early June.

I am looking forward to seeing Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore in Blended, coming out May 23rd.  Moreover, please don’t laugh, but I think I am going to watch the Veronica Mars movie on demand.  Hey, stop it!  I love Kristin Bell.  She is so awesome with Don Cheadle in House of Lies, and she and Dax Shepard are adorable.  OK, enough of that!

Wednesday, Nashville will offer us a special episode…a concert for the troops with some very special guest appearance!  More on that tomorrow on Surviving “Paradise” Wednesday!  Also, watching ABC last night, one of my favorite new shows, Motive, (the highest rated detective show in Canada) returns on May 21st!  Looking forward to it!

Well, enjoy the tennis, minus Mr. Federer and Novak Djokovic, and The Players Championship from TPC Sawgrass (golf) gets underway on Thursday…minus Tiger Woods.

Later!

Update: Kevin Durant wins first NBA MVP!! Well deserved!  Wizards move past Pacers in game one last night, 102-96.  Pacers are not looking like #1 seed in the East…seven game series with the Hawks to advance?  Also the Clippers (despite front office “Issues”) rolled past OKC, 122-105!

JUST IN!  Roger and Mirka welcome twin boys!!  Leo and Lenny join Charlene and Myla Rose!!  WOW, two sets of twins!  Congrats to the Federer family!!

Well done Mr. Holmes…winning Wells Fargo Golf Championship

Well done B J Holmes who won the Wells Fargo Golf Championship at Quail Hollow, despite a very adventurous trek through the last three holes.  The last three holes at Quail Hollow have proved to be the undoing of many a great golfer, but today B J Holmes survived, just barely, coming in at -14 with a bogey on the 18th.  Jim Furyk was sitting in the clubhouse after shooting a round of 65, sitting at -13 watching and wondering but his place was second on the scoreboard when all was said and done.  You have to love this for Mr. Holmes, a guy who had brain surgery in 2011 (a titanium plate is in his head) and then further surgery to treat a post-op infection.  Again, well done Mr. Holmes!  M. Flores finished at -12 for third place and J. Bohn was the fourth place finisher at -11.  Rounding out the leaderboard, Justin Rose -10, Kisner and de Jonge at -9, Sabbatini and the birthday boy, Rory Mcilroy (Happy 25th) at -8.  Lefty (Phil Mickelson) was among the leaders until he had a rough back nine and finished a disappointing -7.  Next up, The Players at TPC Sawgrass.  Last year’s winner, Tiger Woods still recovering from back surgery and will not be there to defend.  Love seeing all these guys play great golf, but gotta say…Hurry back Tiger!!

The Atlanta Braves were swept by the San Francisco Giants, losing today in game three of this series 4-1.  Perhaps we should start a #Bravesneedsomeoffense!!  Scored one run in each of the three games…not going to get it done!  But a shout out to my good buddy, Turk, scout for San Fran!! (see chapter 8, Beach People in my book Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver)

Moving to NBA action, the San Antonio Spurs did what I expected they would do, took care of the Mavs in San Antonio in game seven, blowing past them 119-96 to finally win this series in game seven and advance.  Tony Parker scored more points in this game (in the first half) then he has in any of the previous six games.  Also advancing today, the Clippers over Golden State.  Next up for the Spurs, Portland!  Beware, Damian Lillard is on a roll!!

Tonight, for some pop culture news…a new episode of The Good Wife and the crazy but outstanding show Californication (in its final season).

Tomorrow…the world rights itself for me as the Madrid Open gets underway and no later than Tuesday…the sound of “Mr. Federer to serve” should be bringing a smile to my face!!  Of note:  Djokovic has pulled out due to his wrist injury but Rafa and Stan the man will be there.  That also puts Fed as the #3 seed…so perhaps a Fed – Nadal semifinal??

Until later..enjoy your evening!

It is California Chrome…who says dreams don’t come true?

California Chrome won the 14oth Kentucky Derby today and who says dreams don’t come true, especially when “California” is in the picture!!  This horse was sired by a $8,000. mare and a $2,500. stallion, so basically a $10,000 investment that paid off in the biggest way on the largest of stages!  The owner, Steve Coburn from southern California was celebrating his birthday, the trainer, Art Sherman at age 77, became the oldest trainer of a Derby winner in history, and jockey Victor Espinoza rode this beauty of a race horse to his second win at the Kentucky Derby.  What a day!  This is the first California bred and trained horse to win the Derby since 1962.  Are we finally looking at a Triple Crown winner?  Who knows, but sometimes, fairy tales do come true, and they did today at the crown jewel of horse racing!  Commanding Curve placed second and Danza (yes, named after the actor, Tony Danza) placed third.

Meanwhile over in Charlotte, NC, the third round of the Wells Fargo Golf tournament saw a day of very low scores, some movers and shakers, and at the end of the day, J B Holmes sits atop the leaderboard at -13.  Close on his heels, M. Flores at -12 and then Mickelson at -11.  Phil started the day at -2 and shot a sizzling round of 63, with 29 on the back nine being the lowest nine hole score ever at Quail Hollow.  K. Kisner is at -10, Jason Bohn and Justin Rose at-9 and M. Kaymer at -8.  Rory Mcilroy made one heck of a move himself, shooting a round of 65, starting the day just barely making the cut at +1 and moving into contention now sitting at -6.  The shot of the day belonged to Jonathan Byrd (currently at -7) with an extraordinary eagle putt from the bunker.  So, tomorrow’s final round should be a great one if today’s play is any indication!

The Braves lost a heartbreaker to the Giants last night, 2-1 and Mike Minor took the loss in his pitching return.  Tonight, they are currently at the same score in the 4th with Atlanta trailing 2-1.

In NBA action, the Mavericks outlasted the visiting Spurs in the battle of Texas and evened the series at 3-3.  They will return to San Antonio for the seventh and deciding game.  In the “shot heard round the NBA”, Damian Lillard sank an unbelievable three point shot off an inbounds pass at the buzzer to lift Portland over the Rockets and send them into the next round (Trailblazers take this series 4-2).  The Atlanta Hawks fell to the Pacers today, and this series is now 3-3.  Still, who saw this coming??

OK folks, that’s all I got for now.  Over and out!

Welcome back Mike Minor!

Welcome back Mike, Mike Minor that is for the Atlanta Braves.  He makes his first start after surgery this season tonight against the San Francisco Giants, and will go against Lincecum.  Both teams lead their divisions, the Braves by 1.5 games over the Nationals, and the Giants by .5 games over the Dodgers.  Good to have Mike back.  GO BRAVES!  Also, welcome back Tim Hudson.  Really strange to see him in a Giants uniform!

In Charlotte, the Wells Fargo Golf Tournament completed round two and M. Flores and Angel Cabrera lead the pack at -9.  Justin Rose is in second at -8.  Rory and Rickie (still miss those long locks) both made the cut at +1 and Lefty (Mickelson) sits at -2.  Zach Johnson and the hometown boy, Webb Simpson, are both at -3.  Great weather today and great weather predicted through the weekend for the remainder of the tournament.  Still missing Tiger…

Thought I might get to see The Grand Budapest Hotel today but alas, it is no longer at the theater near me…hate it when that happens.  Now, I await for it to come out on DVD and on demand!

And speaking of pop culture, movies, TV, etc., very popular character is leaving a very popular show.  That would be Christina on Grey’s Anatomy.  Her final appearance will be on the May 15th episode.  This character is played by the wonderful Sandra Oh and I hate to see her go.  A familiar face has returned, Dr. Burke played by Isiah Washington and he offers her an opportunity, but not a romantic one.  Remember Grey’s fans…he left her at the alter!  So, will be a farewell to Christina but Meredith and Derek will continue as they have signed on for two more seasons.

OK folks, enjoy your Friday evening.

Braves already trail 0-1 after one inning…Bummer!  Update: 1-1 in the 5th..Freddie hits RBI single!! Way to go Freddie!!  Giants answer, 2-1, darn.  Also, San Antonio at Dallas in NBA action..game six with Spurs up 3-2, Dallas leading in the 2nd period.  Oh what a night!!  Let’s just watch!!

And don’t forget to catch Unforgettable tonight on CBS at 8:00 pm EST !

Surviving “Paradise” on Thursday

How about Surviving “Paradise” on Thursday, normally on Wednesday, but it came and went so here we are, Thursday!  Check out Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver.  Follow a southern woman who relocates to a new town in southwest Florida full of great excitement only to be met by a ridiculous set of people and circumstances.  Check out the “How to Buy” link on the menu bar on the home page…takes you right to Amazon.com!!Surviving Paradise

Speaking of “drama”, (P.S. there is plenty of it in this story along with some laugh your you know what off humor!), Nashville returned last night on ABC with a new episode.  Scarlett suffered a nervous breakdown, who could blame her, we have now met the mother!  Also, have to wonder if Rayna and Deacon are really “done”?  Preview of next week’s episode makes you wonder…..And it makes me wonder…

Now for some sports news!  The Lakers and head coach Mike D’Antoni have officially parted ways…gee, what a surprise here. NOT!  Had to see this coming.  So who is up next?  Rumors already circulating that they are looking at John Calipari (Univ. of Kentucky) and Kevin Ollie (National Champion U Conn).  Then there is the whole Kobe as player/coach nonsense.  Or is it?  I thought Kobe already had that role anyway.  Stay tuned…

First round of the Wells Fargo Golf tournament underway from Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC.  Angel Cabrera currently leads the pack at -6 with a round of 66.  Lefty (Mickelson) is still on the course and hot on his heals at -5 thru 14 holes.  Rory Mcilroy is also playing well, currently at -3 with a round of 69.  MIA, Tiger Woods of course, as he continues to rehab from recent back surgery.

Kentucky Derby this Saturday for those of you interested and…tennis returns next week, Madrid Open and that means Mr. Federer to serve!  Music to my ears!!!

Have a great night!
