It’s almost November and Tiger is playing golf???

It is almost November.  College Football is in full swing, as is the NFL.  The NBA will kick-off next week.  We are in the early stages of the World Series, and tennis is winding down for the year with the WTA Year End Final under way and the men’s Year End Final in London a little over a week away.  Now what is this, Tiger Woods is playing golf in Malaysia??  Yes, it is true and Tiger is 3 off the lead of Troy Matterson in the CIMB Tournament this week.  WOW, wonders never cease do they?

Oops, she did it again…

No, I am not talking about Britney Spears.  This is about Taylor Swift and another break-up!!  Taylor has reportedly broken up with Conor Kennedy, the son of the late Robert Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy.  He was after all in high school, (boarding school) and she was probably a bit too worldly and mature for him given her fame and success.  Since she just released her new album, Red, he is probably safe for now as far as being the topic of a ‘break up song”.  She is such a lovely and talented young singer/songwriter and seems so wholesome, but she does have an interesting dating resume!

Thursday sports news…

Thursday NFL game is Tampa Bay (rebounding from last weekend’s late failed attempt at comeback win) vs. Minnesota.  Not really must see I don’t think but anyhow, that what NFL offers tonight.

College Football offers ACC match up with 18 Clemson visiting Wake Forest.  Wake is having a disappointing year.  Jim Groh does more with less than most but I expect Clemson and their high powered offense ( and not so good defense) to be too much for Wake tonight.

World Series game 2: 8:00 pm EST Detroit in San Francisco.  How about those Giants!!  Will see what happens tonight.  They will inevitably go to Detroit to play ball before this series is over.

Tennis updates:  WTA Year End final results from Turkey:

Kerber loses to Li Na 4-6, 3-6; Serena defeats Azarenka 6-4, 6-4 and Sam Stosur falls to Errani in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 0-6  Somewhat disappointing performance for Azarenka but then again, when on, Serena is undoubtedly the best women’s tennis player in the world, rankings irrelevant.  Azarenka will get a match against Li Na to try and win and secure her number 1 ranking for this year.  Sharapova will also be in action tomorrow.

Mr. Federer was not in action today at Swiss Indoors.  He will play tomorrow.  The only possible stumbling block to him repeating as champion of this event would have to be Del Potro, barring any unforeseen and unexplainable poor play.  Stay tuned..

In other Tennis news, Rafael Nadal has announced his official withdrawal from the Year End Final in London.  This comes as no surprise as he was not expected to compete due to his continuing efforts to rehab his  injured left knee.  He has not competed since his surprising early exit from Wimbledon 2012!

Juan Carlos Ferrero has announced he is retiring at the end of this year.  He is quoted as saying playing Roger Federer made him feel “inadequate”.  I am sure he is not alone in feeling that way!!

NBA news: Commissioner David Stern has announced he will retire in February 2014 after 30 years serving in that capacity.  He will be replaced by Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver.

I told myself no but…

I told myself not to get hooked on another TV show, but I have to admit, the new ABC drama, Nashville, is proving hard to  resist.  It is entertaining drama with an interesting cast.  I love Connie Britton and her complex and layered character is great!  Loved her on Friday Night Lights as well.  Just saying…it is looking like a hit so far!

World Series Game 1 goes to Giants!!!

The San Francisco Giants take game one of the World Series in a big way, 8-3 over the Detroit Tigers.  Sandoval had three home runs for the Giants and they sent Tiger’s ace and AL Cy Young Award winner Verlander out after four innings.  The Giants are looking very impressive.  It is of course, game one, but congrats to the Giants!!

Tennis followup…

The replay of Federer – Bellucci match was on late.  Much more of a match than I am sure Fed and the hometown crowd had expected.  Will be interesting to see, depending also on how Fed finishes up this tournament in Basel, whether he decides to play in Paris Masters next week or rest up for the Barclay’s ATP Final in London.  If Fed does not play in Paris, he will automatically relinquish the world no. 1 ranking to Djokovic by not defending his points from last year (1000).  He could regain the no. 1 ranking, however, depending on what were to transpire in London.  He has been quoted as saying the goal was to regain the no. 1 ranking, not necessarily to finish the year at no. 1.  I think he would be delighted to finish this year as the world no. 1 and I would certainly be delighted as well!!

On the women’s side, Azarenka needs to win at least one of her two remaining matches in the round robin format in Istanbul to clinch the world no. 1 ranking for the year (she of course currently holds that ranking).  She faces Serena tomorrow so that could be a tall order in that match.  She will have another opportunity to win and claim the year end ranking should she fall to Serena tomorrow.

It is a somewhat complicated format for sure, these tennis rankings.

More tennis news and misc…

World no. 1 Victoria Azarenka pulls out a victory over Angelique Kerber in Turkey by winning the third set 6-4.  She was broken when she first had an opportunity to serve out the set and had another racket smashing show of displeasure with herself.  She then came out and broke back against Kerber to win the third set and the match.  She showed a lot of emotion after willing herself to this comeback victory, holding up her index finger, signaling number 1.  Will be interesting to watch how this plays out with Serena in the mix along with Sharapova and Radwanska who are just now starting their match.

In NBS news, Kobe Bryant will miss the final two preseason games for the Lakers with a strained foot.

Later…

Sharapova and Radwanska are tied at a set a piece, each winning 7-5, Radwanska the first set, Sharapova the second.  Another match going the distance.  They are on serve in the 3rd and deciding set.

Tonight, World Series game number 1 from San Francisco.  Detroit (Verlander) vs. San Francisco (Zito)

Final; Sharapova wins third set 7-5, and the match.  Not really a huge Sharapova fan, just me.  Since I want to keep it positive, that will be enough said.  I like Radwanska and personally feel like current no. 1 Azarenka has more soul as I have blogged in previous post, Battle of the Screamers.  How is Serena Williams not number 1, won Wimbledon, U S Open and Olympic gold?  All boils down to the way the rankings are determined.  Not going to complain when it comes to the “boys”.  Want to see Federer finish at number 1.  Onto tomorrow’s action, enough said.

Updated Tennis scores…

Roger Federer does indeed pull through taking the third set 7-5 to advance in Swiss Indoor Tennis Tournament!  YES!

At the WTA event in Turkey, Azarenka has had another racket smashing display of disgust with herself, as Kerber has pulled even in set number two.  Azarenka did manage to regain her composure and save two match points against her.  They are now even in set number two.  This could be interesting….

Update:  World no. 1 Azarenka pulls out a decisive win in tie breaker to take the second set.  It is going the distance…(first match to go three sets so far as the women’s year end event!)

Some tennis action…

The WTA Year End Finals are taking place in Istanbul, Turkey.  In today’s action Serena Williams defeated Li Na, 7-6, 6-3.  Currently, Kerber is up on Azarenka 7-6, 2-4, so after slamming her racket, Azarenka seems to be regrouping and perhaps on her way to winning the second set and evening the match.  Up later, Sharapova will face Agnieska Radwanska.  Radwanska defeated Kvitova in the first round, 6-3, 6-2 and then Kvitova withdrew today citing a sore throat and stomach issues.  She will be replaced by Sam Stosur.

In the Swiss Indoor Event in Basel, ALERT, Roger Federer is playing Thomas Bellucci.  Fed won the first set 6-3 but dropped the second set in a tie breaker 6-7.  They are all even at 3-3 in the third and deciding set.  This is noteworthy because Fed had a very difficult match with Bellucci at Wimbledon this year.  Here’s to hoping (and expecting) Fed to pull through.  Stay tuned…
