We have two winners, two winner take all games!

Congratulations to the San Francisco Giants and the Detroit Tigers!  They will both advance to their respective league championship games.  The Giants won 6-4 over the Reds to take the series.  Cincinnati blew a 2-0 series lead for the second time in their history.  Detroit beat the A’s 6-0 to take the series in game 5.  I must admit, being a fan of Moneyball, I was sort of pulling for the A’s.  Also, want to congratulate my friend who is a scout for the San Francisco Giants (part of my beach gang in my book Surviving “Paradise”) for the Giants success!!

In the other two MLB games, Washington beat St. Louis 2-1 to even the series 2-2 and we will have a deciding game five today/tonight.  Baltimore took down the Yankees 2-1 in 13 innings to force a deciding game 5 in the Bronx.  The Yankees have lost their previous two opportunities at winner take all games.  Should be interesting.

In NFL action the Tennessee Titans defeated Pittsburgh with a game winning field goal, 26-23 and in College Football, Arizona State was taking care of Colorado 34-17 when I switched off.

Federer, Murray (in three sets) and Djokovic all advance to the semifinals at Shanghai Rolex Masters Tennis Event.  Tomorrow’s action will feature Berdych vs. Djokovic and Federer vs. Murray (replay of Wimbledon final and gold medal final!).  I want to predict a Djokovic – Federer final after tomorrow’s play concludes??  GO ROGER!!

Early College Football for this Saturday…

This weekend’s action offers up some important and enticing match ups.  In the ACC, as a Georgia Tech fan, I am glad for the bye week.  No gut wrenching emotional game watching and hopefully we can regroup and come out and play some good football in the weeks ahead.  Also, interesting to see what happens with the defense after Al Groh firing.

Other ACC action will feature Duke at Virginia Tech, Boston College will visit FSU in Tallahassee, and the biggest ACC game this weekend, North Carolina at Miami.  Will be noteworthy to see how FSU responds after loss to NC State.  I expect they will respond in fine fashion and win.  North Carolina and Miami is a match up that right now, figures to play a big role in who MAY win the Coastal Division.  Duke at Virginia Tech will be interesting, we should find out a lot about both programs!

Other games include Tennessee at Mississippi State, Alabama at Missouri (without their QB, James Franklin), West Virginia vs. Texas, Iowa vs. Michigan State, BYU vs. Oregon State, USC at Washington, and an interesting match up, Florida at Vanderbilt.  But, the two BIG games this weekend are 17 Stanford at 7 Notre Dame and 3 South Carolina at 9 LSU in Baton Rouge.  College Game Day will be in South Bend for the first time since 2005 to feature the game between Stanford and Notre Dame.  The other huge game is the big SEC game between South Carolina and LSU in Death Valley.  Predictions???  I am going to go with Notre Dame and South Carolina (not feeling confident with either, however, right now!)

First BCS poll will be released this Sunday following the weekend’s action.  And sad news for College Football fans and others, the passing of Beano Cook last night at the age of 81.

Tiger over Rory…

In Turkey, Tiger Woods defeated Rory Mcilroy yesterday by six strokes, shooting a 64.  He will advance to the semifinals and play Justin Rose.  Rory was eliminated.  This is interesting since after the first day of play, it was reported that both Tiger and Rory were unlikely to advance after some poor play.  Apparently, the exhibition tournament was a bit more forgiving.  In the other semifinal, Schwartzel (who defeated Kuchar) will play Lee Westwood (who prevailed over Hunter Mahan.)  Now word is that Tiger has lost to Rose and Justin will go on the play Lee Westwood in the final of this event, with the winner to take a 1.5 million paycheck, the runner-up a 1 million paycheck.    Makes going over to Turkey for exhibition golf all worth it does it not??

MLB update: Late last night (EST) the Oakland A’s achieved a walk-off win over the Detroit Tigers, 4-3 and even the series at 2-2.

Over and out for now…

300 Weeks at Number 1 for Mr. Federer!

Roger Federer has assured himself of retaining the world number 1 ranking with a come from behind victory over friend and Davis Cup teammate Stan Wawrinka, 4-6, 7-6, 6-0.  Fed looked shaky in the first two sets of this match at the Shanghai Masters event but came on strong when it counted with his usual brilliant shot making.  By reaching the quarterfinals of the tournament, he will hold on to the number 1 ranking regardless of who wins.  Djokovic and Murray both also advanced to the quarterfinals.

Ironically, the nut-case blogger who posted the death threat against Roger earlier this week has apologized.  Sounds like it was perhaps a prank after all, albeit a very sick prank.

Hope Roger keeps winning, all the way to the Year End Finals in London!!

Is money really the root of all evil?

Maybe it is just greed?  It appears that Demi Moore and Ashton Kutchar were in fact legally married and the problem with them reaching a settlement has to do with “money issues”.  He reportedly makes a whopping $700,000. per episode of Two and A Half Men and is happily involved with Mila Kunis, Esquire Magazine’s latest World’s Sexiest Woman.  Demi, apparently is non to thrilled he has moved on and they cannot reach a money settlement to end their ill fated marriage.  Really?? When is enough, enough?  There is certainly enough money in each of their bank accounts.  Very sad, I think.

Interesting new show on TV tonight, Nashville, starring Connie Britton.  She if of course most recently known as the beloved wife of Coach Taylor (Mrs. T) on Friday Night Lights.  In this show she has a very different kind of marriage.  She plays an aging country singer who has to deal with the up and coming newest county singing sensation along with family matters.  This show is about much more than meets the eye.  Her husband is played by one of the cops on the show Without A Trace and he has decided to run for mayor of Nashville, with the backing of her powerful, wealthy and well connected father.  She has a lot of issues with her father, all of which will be revealed I assume as the season unfolds.  This seems like a classic story of southern family money, control, and power and all the ills that Hollywood can portray that to sometimes bring.  There appear to be many untold secrets yet to be revealed.  NY Post calls this the roll of a lifetime for Connie Britton.  It was very enticing, but I do not know if I can get hooked on another TV show!!  Anyhow,  it seems promising!

MLB updates: St. Louis wins 8-0 over Washington and leads that series 2-1.

San Francisco wins 8-3 over Cincinnati and that series is tied 2-2.

The Yankees just scored a walk off victory over Baltimore in the 12th inning, 3-2 and take the lead in that series, 2-1.

Detroit is leading Oakland 2-0 in the 4th inning.

That final update tomorrow along with tennis results!!

Just saying…I recommend them highly!!

Sad news, sports and a pop culture tidbit…

On Dancing With The Stars, Helio Castroneves, a former winner and current Indy series racing champion was eliminated last night along with Drew Lachey (brother of Nick).  Helio is a former DWTS champion??? Where were all the Indy car nation fans?? Not voting apparently.  Say it is not so…

Sad news..Alex Karras, former standout NFL defensive lineman with Detroit Lions and later an actor, passed away yesterday from complications from dementia.  He was one of 3,500 NFL players suing the NFL regarding it’s treatment of head injuries.

NBA news…Is Kobe hinting at retiring after the 2012-13 season??  He has been in the league for 17 grueling seasons and at 34, he is in fact an “old” 34 since he came right out of high school into the NBA.  He has played a number of seasons with some nagging injuries, has had a number of treatments on his knees and indicates it is hard to imagine the amount of work it would take for him to keep himself in peak performance condition for several more seasons.  Will be interesting to see how things play out this year.  I think it will depend somewhat on whether the Lakers can win the NBA Championship and Kobe get ring number six with the addition of Dwight Howard.  P.S.  This is Kobe’s team!!

Georgia Tech has announced that Charles Kelly, who was previously in charge of the defensive secondary, will in fact be the interim defensive coordinator, replacing Al Groh who was fired earlier this week.  The secondary has been one of the few strengths of the GT defense.  Moreover, he is regarded as an excellent recruiter.  Three winnable games are on the schedule after having this weekend off.  Don’t know if he will be candidate for permanent replacement, however.

Eleven of Lance Armstrong’s former competitors have testified against him in the alleged doping investigation.  His representative calls it a “witch hunt”.  Um…you be the judge (no pun intended).

In Shanghai Masters event, Federer, Djokovic and Murray all advance (with Murray advancing in a walk over).  Federer will face his friend and countryman Wawrinka tomorrow.  A lot of great pro Fed signs are always in the crowd when he is in action.  One of my personal favorites:  “Shh..Quiet!  Genius at Work!!”

Ignoring the MLB???

I do not mean to be ignoring the boys of October, ie, the MLB playoffs.  It is so easy to get caught up in all the drama of College Football and the NFL that the MLB playoffs do not get the proper attention that they deserve.   So, let update:

The Yankees and the Orioles are currently tied at 1-1 in their series.  The Cards and the Nationals are also tied at 1-1.  We have two possible elimination games today.  The Giants trail the Reds 0-2 and the A’s trail the Tigers 0-2.  Shout out to MLB playoffs for today.  We could possibly have two games decided by tonight, or not???

In golf action, Tiger and Rory both lost their first outing in an exhibition being played in Turkey.  Both are unlikely to advance to tomorrow’s action.  In other Tiger news, rumor has it that he apologized to the four rookies on the US Ryder Cup team for his “poor” play.  I do not consider his play to have been poor, but he did fail to win a single round.  Is Tiger becoming “classy”?

Tennis news:  Roger Federer will be in action again (finally) tomorrow in the Shanghai Masters event.  It is never a bad day when Roger Federer is playing tennis.  GO FED!!

In NFL action on Monday night, the Texas defeated the Jets 23-17 and join the Atlanta Falcons as the only two undefeated teams in the league.

Pop Culture tidbits:  Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman are divorcing after thirty years of marriage.  There is talk of his “wandering eye” being the cause.  Such a shame.  A lot of glancing upwards must be involved??  (That was bad, shame on me!)

Reggie Bush and his girlfriend, Lilit Avagyan, are expecting a child together.  Congrats to them?  Guess Kim K is OK with this as she and Kanye  West are supposedly moving in together.  Still, always somehow saw Kim and Reggie together.  Oh well…

That is all for now.
