Rained out at the BMW, NFL close games, and Manning Bowl III

The BMW Golf Championships experienced a “rain out” today as after two weather delays and a deluge of rain, play was postponed for the fourth and final round until tomorrow.  Gives they guys a day to rest up…

NFL Sunday has been full of close games and last minute wins today, even one going to OT.  The Atlanta Falcons survive the St. Louis Rams, 31 – 24.  Nice day for Matt Ryan and Julio Jones, 10+ catches and a gorgeous 85 yard catch and TD run.  Still, little concern over the Falcons defense as they allowed the Rams right back into the game.  Atlanta held a 24 – 3 lead at the half.  But, the Falcons get the win and are now 1-1.  Elsewhere, Chicago overcame four turnovers to win on the final play of the game, 31 – 30 over Minnesota.  E J Manuel (of FSU fame) led the Buffalo Bills to a last minute TD to defeat the Carolina Panthers in Buffalo, 24 – 23.  Huge day for both M. Vick of Philadelphia and Phillip Rivers of San Diego as the Chargers rebound from last week’s loss to defeat the Eagles, 30 – 27 in Philly.  Aaron Rodgers passed for over 400 yards and the Green Bay Packers defeat RGIII and the Redskins, 38 – 20.  The RGIII show has not yet lived up to last year’s magic.  The Houston Texans finally prevail over the Tennessee Titans in OT, 30 – 24.  Kansas City Chiefs edge the Dallas Cowboys, 17 – 16.

Now, it is all about the Manning Bowl, or Manning Bowl III.  This is the third meeting between the two Manning QB’s and could it be the last?  Archie and Olivia (parents) are uncomfortably in the house.  At the half, Denver leads, 10 – 9.  Both Mannings have performed well, Eli has one interception, Peyton none in the first half.  Really a special game when these two face off (obviously the previous two match ups featured Peyton in another uniform, the Colts, with Eli wearing the blue uniform of the Giants).  I predicted Peyton and the Broncos to win…it looks like whoever has the ball last might win this one.  Stay tuned… (P.S. SNF will feature San Francisco at Seattle, but for now, it is all happening in NYC!)

Manning Bowl III goes to big brother Peyton (as did the previous Manning Bowls, I and II) as Denver crushes the Giants, 41 – 23.  Both Manning boys passed for over 300 yards but Eli had four interceptions (bad) and Peyton had none.  Big day for Moreno out of UGA at RB for Denver, scoring two touchdowns, one a 25 yard run and the other a 20 yard run.  Big day for Holliday out of LSU who had a 81 yard punt return for a TD.  The Broncos were able to run the ball as well as pass brilliantly with the Sheriff at the helm.  The Giants could not run the ball and that was a big difference in the game.  The only negative for the Broncos, too many yards in penalties, and a couple of injuries in the second half that one hopes are not serious.  All in all, great day for Peyton, not so great for Eli.  They met in the middle of the field and said “I love you” as is their tradition, and then they ran their separate ways.  As for Mom and Dad, well what can you say, it had to be painful anyway you look at it!  In summary, Denver is simply the better more complete team.

Footnote:  Peyton Manning is the only four time MVP in the history of the NFL.  Enough said.

CFB, Manning vs. Manning and BMW Golf Championship

Well, it’s Sunday and here is what we have on the menu for today…but first, a few more college football scores from late Saturday.  Notre Dame survives at Purdue, 31 – 24; Wisconsin is upset by Arizona State, 32 – 30 (not a huge upset, some predicted Arizona State would win); Ohio State over California, 52 – 34, but the Buckeyes continue to give up some points; Auburn over Miss State in a close one, 24 – 30; and finally, more bad news for Longhorn fans, Texas falls to Ole Miss at home, 44 – 23 (after Manny Diaz was fired as defensive coordinator last week due to their first loss, will there be more to follow?)

NFL today will first feature the St. Louis Rams at the Atlanta Falcons.  The Rams are 1-0 while the Falcons are 0-1 after falling to the Saints in New Orleans.  Falcons need to win this game!  Meanwhile the Saints will play the Bucs.  But the game I am looking forward to is Peyton vs. Eli, the Manning boys face off as the Denver Broncos travel to the Big Apple to face Eli and the New York Giants.  Denver should win but let’s enjoy watching and see.

Also on today, the final round of the BMW Golf Championship.  The top thirty in the FedEx point standings will be determined after today’s round and those will move onto Atlanta next week for the FedEx Cup Championship (sponsored by Coca-Cola of course!)  As of right now, play has been suspended just outside of Chicago due to weather.  Stay tuned…

Footnote:  Tiger Woods has twenty birdies in three rounds, leads the field.

CFB Saturday…Bama over Aggies and more!

Well, it was THE game today, 1 Alabama at 6 Texas A & M.  Revenge for Bama??  Well the Tide rolled, 49 – 42, but it was one heck of a college football game from College Station.  Manziel was a star, backed up all his nonsense so to speak, although he did throw two interceptions (one on a deflected pass), as he led the Aggies up and down the field, running and throwing.  McCarron was equally impressive for the Tide along with Yeldon at RB.  Big win for Bama and Saban as this keeps them at #1 but 42 points was the most points given up by a Saban coached Alabama team.  He will not be happy about that, but he will be thrilled to leave College Station with the win.  He told Aggie coach Kevin Sumlin at the post game hand shake, “you just took ten years off my life”.  It was a great one, Bama outlasts the Aggies to remain atop the CFB world early in this season.  Bama outscored the Aggie 35 – 7 early and that is where the game was won.  No interceptions for McCarron on the day, great job of managing the game.  Bama did give up over 600 yards of offense to the Aggies.  Two picks were costly by Manziel.

OK, on to some other highlights.  One of my other favorites, the Quack Attack from Oregon had NO trouble with the Vols of Tennessee, winning 59 – 14.  See DAT (DeAnthony Thomas) run!  See Mariota run and throw!  Love those Ducks!  One of my other favorites, the Cardinals of Stanford took care of Army on the road, 34 – 20.  It wasn’t flashy, kind of have to give credit to Army for scoring 20 points, but at the end of the day, Stanford is 2-0.  UCLA took care of Nebraska on the road, 41 – 21, so much for those who thought the boys from Hollywood could not handle those Cornhuskers.  USC redeemed themselves with a 35 – 7 thrashing of Boston College at home.  FSU started slow but then rolled, and I do mean rolled to a 62 – 7 beat-down of Nevada.  Michigan survived Akron, 28 – 24, needed a goal line stand as the game wound down to preserve a victory.  Louisville and QB Teddy Bridgewater took care of home state rival Kentucky, 27 – 13.  Virginia Tech survived East Carolina, 15 – 10.  What is up with VT??

More games either getting underway and/or to follow later tonight:  Ohio State at California (without QB Braxton Miller); Mississippi State at Auburn;  Vanderbilt  at South Carolina (could this be an upset?  will Clowney show up?) South Carolina already up 14 – 0; Notre Dame at Purdue (why this is the featured game on ABC I do not get); Wisconsin at Arizona State (late game, could be a really good one!); Ole Miss at Texas (boy does Texas need a win!) and well, that is all I got.  It has been one busy day in college football so far and it isn’t over yet.  Until later…

A few updates and then a good night! South Carolina 35 – Vandy 25 (um?) in the 4th quarter; Notre Dame 3 – Purdue 10 at the half (yawn); (now tie in the third, 10 – 10) Ohio State 52 – California 27 (apparently the Buckeyes are OK without Miller); Texas 23 – Ole Miss 17…good news for Mack Brown and Longhorn nation?  We shall see…oops check that…Ole Miss goes up 31 – Texas 23?  South Carolina over Vandy 35 – 25 is a final!  Until tomorrow!

Vad Lee returns home and GT over Duke!!

So many games, go little time, and only three TVs!  Anyhow, first things first.  My team, GT took care of Duke in Durham, NC to win their first ACC game this season, 38 – 14.  Very nice performance for the Jackets and especially for Vad Lee, who returned “home” as he hails from Durham, NC.  Lee scored 5 touchdowns (4 touchdowns passing and one TD run) and except for one interception, was exceptional.  He gives the Jackets something they have sorely missed, a dual threat in the option offense.  He can run and he can throw!  He threw two touchdown passes to DeAndre Smelter (remember that name) who was a standout baseball player, heavily recruited by other colleges to play football as well, and stands 6’3″ and weighs in at 220 lbs.  This guy could be the next “great receiver” at the flats.  GT rushed for over 340 yards and the only blemish was a blocked field goal which should not have happened.  They have a great kicker and punter, great offense, defense looks improved, but still tough to gauge the improvement as Duke was playing their back up QB.  No complaints from me however, looking good Jackets!

So many football games all on at the same time, gee, spread the wealth a bit.  Alabama and Texas A & M in a battle and also Oregon is dismantling Tennessee, those are the three games I have been watching.  I will give today’s results a bit later when all is said and done!

Meanwhile, BMW Golf Championships took place as well.  Round three completed ( must admit, did not watch with all the football action but will watch tomorrow along with the “Manning Brothers Game”) but here is the results of round three: Jim Furyk leads the pack at -13, Steve Stricker at -12, Brandt Snedeker at -11, Zach Johnson at -10, Tiger Woods at -9 (nice round for Tiger who suffered the one shot penalty yesterday and started today at -4), Ryan Moore and Charles Schwartzel at -8.  Mickelson finished at -1 and Rory Mcilroy at a dismal +10.

Back later with some more college football finals!

Jim Furyk has special round of golf at BMW Championships!

What a spectacular and special performance today by Jim Furyk at the BMW Championships!  It was a cool, windy day in Lake Forest, Indiana and Jim Furyk started the day at +1.  He proceeded to shoot a round of golf that has only been done by five others in the history of the game, a round of 59, 12 under on today’s round and finds himself tied at the top with Brandt Snedeker at -11.   With the conditions on the course today, the average score by the world’s best golfers was +1 and the next lowest round was 65, just to put a punctuation mark on what he accomplished today.  As many golfers remarked, as they all turned to see how he was doing and those that were finished were watching in the clubhouse…”what course is he playing”??  Truly special day for Jim Furyk, Chicago has been good to him as it is also the site where he won his only major when the 2003 US Open was played there.  Zach Johnson finished up in second at -8.  There are a bunch of players at -6, one of them was Tiger Woods, or at least so it seemed when he came off the course.  However, he was accessed a two shot penalty for a ball that moved on hole number one so Tiger will start tomorrow at -4.  I believed he will play with Sergio Garcia…hope the hatchet is indeed buried and they can just get along…fully expect them to both act like pros.

Other notables, Phil Mickelson finished up today at +2 and Rory Mcilroy at +13, in last place…not going well for Rory.

Play continues tomorrow…

P.S.  There is also a rather big football game on tomorrow as well, 3:30 pm EST from College Station, Texas.  Alabama comes to visit Texas A & M.  College Gameday will be live tomorrow morning form College Station on ESPN at 9:00 am.

See you there!

Brandt Snedeker in the lead after 1st round at BMW Championships

The BMW Championshiops got underway today in Lake Forest, Illinois, just outside of Chicago.  It was a beautiful day, windy but warm with cooler air on the way for the weekend.  This is the third and final playoff in the FeExCup series and the top thirty in the points standings after this tournament will advance to the final at Eastlake Country Club in Atlanta, GA.

Currently, Henrik Stenson has taken over first place in the FedEx standings, Tiger Woods is in second trailing by 14 points, with Adam Scott in third.  This will change again once this tournament is completed.

Stenson is currently at +1.  Brandt Snedeker led the way today with a brilliant round of 63 and is atop the leaderboard at -8.  Zach Johnson is at -7, Steve Stricker, Charles Schwartzel, Kevin Steelman, and Tiger Woods are at -5, Adam Scott, John Merrick, and Ryan Moore are at -4.

Mickelson had somewhat of a rough go of it on the front nine, making the turn at +2 but he birdied thee holes on the back nine to wind up play at -1.  Rory Mcilroy had a disastrous day, finishing up at +7.

This is the second oldest golf tournament behind the US Open.  Going to be some great golf tomorrow through Sunday with everything on the line to see who make the cut to head to Atlanta.

TNF tonight will offer the New York Jets at the New England Patriots.  Geno Smith will play QB for the Jets as Mark Sanchez is likely out for the year.

CFB will showcase TCU vs. Texas Tech.

Over and out for now!

It’s late but it is still Wednesday, Surviving “Paradise” promo day!

Late to the party today but better late than never.  It is is that magical day, Wednesday, hump day, and the day I promote my book Surviving Paradise Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver.   It is a very funny and witty  look at a humorous and ridiculous neighborhood experience in southwest Florida.  But then again, when isn’t  Florida ridiculous and humorous???  It is fiction but also based on a real life experience.  There is a screenplay being written as we speak, hopefully with the magic carpet ride in the future.  Please check it out at Amazon.com for $8.99 in paperback (reduced!), $4.99 in kindle edition, and also $4.99 at Barnes and Noble nook.  Try it, I  know you will like it!!

OK, a few other noteworthy mentions.  Pop culture news…Emily Blunt and John Kransinski are expecting their first child !  Congrats to this very cute couple!!

Soccer:  (yes, Soccer!!)  USA defeats Mexico to qualify for the World Cup.  USA!!  USA!!

Finally saw Les Miserables…took me a while…it was almost three hours long.  Great performances by some truly great actors/actresses.  A bit much on “singing” and almost no dialogue, I mean really no dialogue.  Great and powerful story.  Hope to catch up a bit and maybe watch Mud, 42, Great Gatsby and some others I missed at theaters.  So many movies, so little time!

Golf:  BMW Championship gets underway tomorrow.  Tiger, Phil, Rory and all the rest in action in this third and final playoff in the FedEx Cup Championships!

Finally, sad news for “the captain”, Derek Jeter.  The Yankee short stop is out for the rest of this year.  He has been placed on the disabled list and his injury plagued 2013 season is over.  He vows to return in 2014.

Until tomorrow…

Suh fined, see Vick run, Manning vs. Manning, and Bama vs. A & M

Well after a hectic weekend of college football and the US Open (which continued through Monday), it is Tuesday so how about a little bit of this and little bit of that!

Ndamukong Suh was fined $100,000. for his low block against All Pro center John Sullivan in Sunday’s game against the Vikings.  Look’s like Suh is starting out the year just like he wound up last year…paying fines for “illegal hits”.  Moving on, how about “see those Eagles run”!  With head coach Chip Kelly (of “Quack Attack” fame) at the helm, the Eagles and Michael Vick look reinvented.  They held off a late surge by the Redskins to win in Washington, 33 – 27.  RGIII part deux, does not yet look  up to the standard set last year by his outstanding rookie season.  In beautiful San Diego, Houston, led by QB Matt Schaub rallied from a 21 point deficit to beat the Chargers, 31 – 28.  Schaub had 346 yards passing with 3 TD”s.

OK, how about the Atlanta Braves…lead the NL East by twelve games, yes that is 12 games!  Just thought I would throw that in there…Let’s Go Braves!

This weekend we have two huge battles, one on Saturday, and one on Sunday.  The one on Sunday will be a bit more “friendly”.  Saturday is of course the day when hot shot Johnny Manziel and the Texas A&M Aggies welcome #1 Bama to College Station.  Alabama and Nick Saban should be loaded for bear (um..perhaps a pun there) to avenge that upset loss they suffered to the Aggies last year in Tuscaloosa.  It kicks off at 3:30 pm EST.  On Sunday, we have a much kinder, gentler battle to watch, the battle of the Manning boys, as Peyton and the Denver Broncos travel to the Big Apple to take on little bro Eli and the Giants.  Always great for us to watch this, (hope Eli does not throw three interceptions this week??) but has to be a bit difficult for them, and Archie and momma as well.

Well, that is it for today, just a like I said earlier, a little bit of this and a little bit of that.  Have a great night!
