Pacers surge to 3-1 lead over Knicks, San Antonio over Golden State

WOW!  How about those Indiana Pacers!  They defeated the Knicks last night, 93 – 82 to take a commanding 3 -1 lead in the series.  Led by George Hill with 26 points, Paul George with 18 points and 14 rebounds, the Pacers appear ready to bounce the cold shooting, slumping NY Knicks out of the playoffs.  Melo scored 24 points for the Knicks before fouling out.  At one point, I truly thought the Knicks might pose some sort of challenge to the Heat should they meet up in the Eastern Conference finals.  It is now starting to look like the Pacers may have to step up to the plate!

The old guys in San Antonio outgunned Golden State, 109 – 91 with Tony Parker leading the way with 25 points and 10 rebounds.   Barnes had 25 and Jack had 20 for Golden State but the hobbled Steph Curry was held to just 9 points.  This Spurs team relied on high energy basketball, winning the battle on the boards and securing loose balls, and they now are up 3-2 in this series.

Tonight, likely goodbye Chicago Bulls as they travel to Miami to take on Lebron and the Heat, trailing 1-3 in the series.  Hard to see Miami not closing this series out tonight, especially with Chicago so depleted injury wise and worn out mentally and physically.  Let’s hope there is no “ugliness”.  Later, Memphis, up 3-1, will try to eliminate OKC in Oklahoma.  This one is a toss up but the Grizzlies have been very impressive!

Tennis heads to the Eternal City, Rome!

On from Madrid to the Eternal City, Rome, Italy, as the top tennis players in the world reconvene on the road to Roland Garros.  Djokovic, Murray, and Federer all look to bounce back from less than stellar performances in Madrid.  Rafael Nadal who is still ranked at #5 behind David Ferrer at #4, will look to continue his dominance on clay.  Much to my chagrin, Federer has dropped to #3 in the world rankings behind Murray.

Djokovic is in action today and he has advanced in two sets over A. Montanes, 6 -2,  6-2.   Federer vs. P. Starace is just now getting under way and Murray and Nadal will be in action tomorrow.  (Federer is sporting a new, shorter haircut!) Stan Wawrinka, Fed’s fellow Swiss countryman, has moved up to #10 in the world after making it into the final at Madrid against Nadal last week.  Way to go Stan.  Wawrinka advanced today in three sets, 5 – 7, 6 -3, 6- 3 over Berlocq.  Both del Potro and Berdych are also in action today.

GO FEDERER!  Update: 51 minutes, 35 winners with only 8 unforced errors, Federer dismantles Starace 6 – 1, 6- 2.  Shorter hair, and looking much sharper on the court than he did last week in Madrid!

Andrew Wiggins chooses Kansas

Andrew Wiggins, the #1 basketball recruit in the nation has announced his decision!  He will play his college ball (one and done?) at Kansas.  The 6’7″ small forward out of West Virginia chose Kansas over FSU, North Carolina, and Kentucky.  Very interesting choice as both of his parents were star athletes at FSU.  Congrats to Wiggins and Kansas!

P.S. Don’t cry for Kentucky, they signed five of the top ten recruits!

No Rose, Deng or Hinrich, no chance as Bulls fall to Heat in game 4

No Rose, Deng or Hinrich, no chance for the Bulls, as they fall to the Heat in Chicago, 88 – 65 in game four.  Chicago scored a grand total of 9 points in the third period.  The “fight” appears to be gone as the Bulls look like a defeated team.  After a promising start, taking game one from the Heat in Miami, the Bulls have faltered and been dominated by the Heat in this very contentious series.  LeBron had 27 points in last night’s victory and one would have to expect that this series will end on Wednesday night back in Miami as the Heat head home with a 3 -1 lead in the series.  Of note: Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau was fined $35,000. by the league for comments regarding the officiating, or lack of officiating in this series.

Memphis, led by Marc Gasol (23 points, 11 rebounds, 6 blocks) came back from trailing by as many as 23 points last evening at home to defeat OKC 103 – 97.  Tremendous rally by the Grizzlies and then they held on to keep OKC at bay to take a 3-1 lead in this series.  Durant had 27 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists for OKC.  This series resumes on Wednesday night as well in Oklahoma with Memphis in control at 3-1.  Have to think OKC may have a shot at taking game five on their home floor.

Tonight, Knicks and Pacers (surprising Pacers hold 2-1 lead in series) and Golden State at San Antonio, all tied up at 2-2!

Some interesting changes for 2013-14 TV schedule

Say hello and say goodbye to some TV shows and stars.  CSI NY is out while CSI  returns.  CSI  NY was apparently the lowest rated of the CSI franchise.  NCIS, NCIS LA, and The Good Wife return (yes!) as does The Big Bang Theory, Mike and Molly, and How I Met Your Mother (the next season will be it’s last, will we finally find out who is the mother???).  Go On with Matthew Perry has been cancelled.  Bummer, I thought it was a good show, Matthew Perry has not had much luck with any of his TV attempts since Friends.  Other popular shows returning, Revenge, Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy, Nashville (I would hope so!).  Out – Vegas with Dennis Quaid and Malibu Country with Reba Mcentire.

TV welcomes back two oldie but goldie stars, Sean Hayes and Michael J. Fox.  With 30 Rock and The Office ending their runs, NBC is bringing in some star power with two new shows.  First Sean Hayes of Will and Grace fame will star in Sean Saves The World, playing a gay, divorced dad.  Michael J. Fox will star in Welcome To The Family, a drama/comedy centered around his character as a newsman trying to revive his sinking career.  Also, rumor is that Seth Meyers of SNL fame will replace Jimmy Fallon on Late Night when Fallon replaces Jay Leno on The Tonight Show.

They come, they go…it is every changing.  Unforgettable with Poppy Montgomery will return on June 30th.  CBS had cancelled it twice but has now announced it will return.  I really like that show so it is good news to me!  Also, ABC will bring back Parenthood for it’s fifth season.

Golden State wins over San Antonio in OT, 97 – 87

Golden State, with a hobbled Steph Curry (injured ankle) prevailed over San Antonio in OT, 97 – 87 to even the series at 2-2.  Harrison Barnes (former standout at North Carolina) had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the victorious Warriors.  Ginobli led San Antonio with 21 points.  The game was close, and see-sawed back and forth in the closing minutes of regulation, ending in a 82 – 82 tie.  Jarrett Jack (former GT standout) had 24 points for Golden State in the win.  Now, the series heads back to San Antonio.  No fights, technical fouls, ejections, gee, just some good basketball!

OK, gotta admit, I was watching Tiger win most of the afternoon.  Still, great win for Golden State!

Tiger Woods wins The Players for the first time since 2001

What a day of golf!  Tiger Woods (with girlfriend Lindsey Vonn watching) won The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass for the first time since 2001.  Tiger finished at -13.   Swedish rookie (now a Jacksonville resident), David Lingmerth  finished in second at -12. Kevin Streelman and Jeff Maggert came in at -11 and three players came in at -10, Martin Laird, Henrik Stenson and Ryan  Palmer.  Sergio Garcia (who should have kept his mouth shut!) finished at -9.  World #2 Rory Mcilory came in at -7 along with Snedeker, Westwood and others.

Great win for Tiger, his fourth victory this season, the most to start a golf season in his illustrious career.  Gee, anybody want to say Tiger is not the best golfer in the world right now?  In the trophy presentation, last year’s winner Matt Kuchar (GT guy!) on hand to present Tiger with the trophy.  Tiger gave a shout out to his caddie, Joe LaCava, long time caddie for Freddie Couples, who he said gave him a lot of good advice in finishing this out.  Also on hand, girlfriend, Lindsey Vonn, (as mentioned earlier) cheering him on!  Looks like things are going very well in the world of Tiger Woods right now!

Final leaderboard:  Tiger Woods, -13, David Lingmerth -12, Kevin Streelman and Jeff Maggert -11, Martin Laird, Henrik Stenson and Ryan Palmer at -10 and Sergio Garcia at -9.  World #2 Rory Mcilory finished at -7 along with B. Snededker and Lee Westwood and others.

Nice win for Tiger Woods!
