No sunshine at Quail Hollow, but Mickelson shines bright

The promise of 72 degrees and sunshine did not materialize today at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC for the Wells Fargo Golf Tournament.  What is going on with this May weather in the south?  Anyhow, Phil Mickelson was shinning brightly, shooting a round of -5 today and sits atop the leaderboard at -9 after round 2.  In pursuit are Whatney,  McNeill, and Gardiner at -7 and Rory Mcilroy along with Lee Westwood are at -6.  Round three will air tomorrow at 3:00 pm on CBS.  It will compete with that “little horse race” which airs on NBC, you know the one, The Kentucky Derby!

Personally, I am eagerly awaiting next week’s return of Roger Federer to competitive tennis!  He returns to action next week after a seven week rest in Madrid.  YES!

Thurs. NBA results, Golden State advances, Bulls and Nets will go seven!

Thursday night NBA playoffs are completed and one team advances, one series will go to a deciding game seven.  The Golden State Warriors are into the next round, winning 92 – 88 over Denver to advance to round 2.  Glad to have this one done, things were starting to get a bit ugly, accusations of “dirty play”, coaches being fined regarding comments about officiating.  So, this one in the books.

Meanwhile, the Bulls and the Nets, not so fast my friend.  The Nets take down the Bulls in Chicago, 95 – 92, and now there will be a deciding game seven in Brooklyn.  Um…I am thinking perhaps Brooklyn takes this series in seven?  Bulls are of course missing superstar Derek Rose.

Tonight, we have four games that are all at 3-2, so we will perhaps have more teams advancing and others forcing a deciding game seven.

Indy will play the Hawks in Atlanta.  Look for Atlanta to win this one and force a game seven.  (Or not, see update below).  Also, the Knicks face the Celtics in Boston.  Hard to call here, Knicks should advance but it is in Boston…so?

Late games, OKC without Westbrook plays at Houston.  Toss up for sure?  LA Clippers vs. Memphis…what is wrong with the Clippers?  Thought they would have this wrapped up by now.  So we shall see…

Switching quickly to MLB. the Braves fell to the Nationals last night at Turner Field, 3 -1, so that series ended up in a 2-2 split.  The Braves and the Nats are expected to be the main rivals for first place in the division.  GO BRAVES!

Update: Well, I might be off base on my prediction…Hawks trail the Pacers by a mile at the half. Meanwhile, the Celtics are losing to the Knicks at half, 39 – 27.  Home teams are not faring well so far in the early games!

Iron Man 3! Simply awesome..

OK, I got myself to the theater and saw a movie!  Iron Man 3, and it is superb!  This is Hollywood blockbuster movie making at its best!  Robert Downey, Jr., (did I mention he is a genius?) is brilliant, Gwyneth Paltrow, wow, what a great month for her, Iron Man 3 and People’s Most Beautiful Woman, then the incomparable Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce as the face of evil, Rebecca Hall, remember her, Woody Allen movie with Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz as well as The Town with Ben Affleck, anyhow, this movie is MUST SEE!  It is entertaining, full of action of course, but also funny, even touching and poignant (look for the character of a young boy Tony befriends in Tennessee).  OK, cannot give away any story info, but I gotta say, having not had the pleasure of going to a movie recently,  my bad, I love movies, and seeing this one was perfect for breaking the drought.  At the end as the credits role, we get a little bit of introspective Robert Downey, Jr., you know he is a genius (I think I said that) and quite a reflective soul, and you hear his voice speak about evil, and demons…we create our own demons, they often begin with the best of intentions, then it becomes twisted and perverted, then evil…So, go now, go see Iron Man 3, at a theater near you!

Wells Fargo Golf Champiomship from Charlotte, NC

Wells Fargo Golf Championship got underway today from Charlotte, NC.  Weather was kind of strange, cloudy and in the 60’s.  Sunshine and mid 70’s expected tomorrow.  Gotta say, being in Atlanta, we are experiencing this strange phenomenon in the south, it is called Spring.  We have not seen this in many years, usually going right from cold of winter to HOT summer weather.  Not this year, spring has sprung!

Anyhow, the leaderboard after day one features the world #2 Rory Mcilroy in the hunt at -5.  Along with Rory are Ryan Moore, Nick Whatney, Robert Gerrigus, Derek Ernst, Daniel Summerhays and Nate Smith.  Now, who is Nate Smith?  He is 29 years old, a Duke graduate who hails from Santa Monica, CA.  Gee, I am already jealous!  OK, back to the leaderboard.  Lefty (Phil Mickelson) had a nice round of golf today and is at -4 along with Zach Johnson, Lucas Glover and a couple of others.  Tiger is not in the field.  (Boo!!!)

OK, tomorrow’s action continues under sunny skies on Golf Channel.

P.S.  Happy Birthday to Rory Mcilroy on Saturday, 5/4/13!

Atlanta Braves, way to go Justin Upton and Evan Gattis

Two Atlanta Braves were recognized for their excellence in the month of April.  Justin Upton was named NL player of the month.  Evan Gattis was named rookie of the month.  Way to go and well deserved!

The Braves host the Washington Nationals tonight at Turner Field in Atlanta in the final game of a four game series.  The Braves lead the series, 2-1, having lost last night for the first time to the Nats this year, 2-0.  On the mound tonight, Chris Medlin for the Braves and Dan Haren for the Nationals.  GO BRAVES!

Nashville recap…Rayna loves Deacon, finally!

Finally, Rayna loves Deacon and she tells him and well, you know, good things happen at last.  But that was the ending, so back to more of the beginning.  Teddy is getting awfully big for his britches, blows off his gal pal Peggy after finding out she leaked info about his divorce to the tabloids and was blackmailed by Lamar and hid it from him.  Lamar has decided Rayna is now the “good” daughter, leaving sister Tandy to strike a proposed deal with Coleman, telling him to look into Teddy’s past!  Ouch!  Gunnar gets quite a surprise from his new neighbor/friend/bandmate, a kiss, and he is a guy and well, Gunnar is into Scarlett!  Awkward!  Scarlett encounters Avery, now a roadie, and he tells her he is trying to get back to being the guy she first met…um…so we shall see, Gunnar or Avery?  Meanwhile, Juliette just cannot avoid drama, and betrayal.  Her momma’s sober coach, Dante, her new lover and manager screws her over but good, to the tune of about $500,000. plus a former girlfriend to boot.  Oh, Juliette, when will you ever learn?  Deacon tells Juliette he is done after the next leg of the tour and his new girlfriend realizes he has feeling for Rayna that are in no way over…see above…Rayna and Deacon finally hook up after she flirts with taking a trip to St. Lucia with Liam.  So, what will happen next?  We will wait and see, two more episodes before the season finale.  One hopes for a happily ever after for Rayna and Deacon, but this is nighttime drama at it’s best, so??  More will be revealed next Wednesday night at 10:00 pm EST!

NBA Wednesday, Pacers over Hawks, Houston outlasts OKC

Wednesday night playoff action in the NBA, fairly mild on the “drama meter”.  No real accusations of “dirty play” or near fights, but some interesting results non the less.  The Pacers soundly defeated the Atlanta Hawks in Indiana, 106 – 83 to take a 3-2 lead in the series.  Game six will be in Atlanta on Friday.

Houston outlasted OKC on the road, 107 – 100 and has now come back from 0 – 3 to a 2 -3 record in this series.  Harden in action but no Jeremy Lin.  The next game will be in Houston so…should be interesting!!

Tonight’s action features the Nets at the Bulls, Chicago leads series 3-2, so will Bulls close it out at home?  Also, um..will there be drama as the Nuggets face off against Golden State on the road?  Will there be accusations of “dirty play”?  Will Steph Curry and his ankles survive?  Stay tuned…Golden State leads in the series 3-2 and can close it out with a win at home!

Celtics over Knicks, 92 – 86, and yes, I was wrong!

OK, when I am wrong, I admit it!  I was wrong.  I really thought the Knicks would advance tonight with a win over the Celtics in Madison Square Garden.  NOT!  The Celtics showed tremendous resilience and have now come back from a 0 – 3 deficit to defeat the Knicks, 92 – 86 on the road.  The series now stands at 2 -3, advantage NY and game six will be from Boston on Friday night on ESPN.  No team has ever come back from being down 0 – 3 but perhaps?  I am not going to say for sure but I still think the Knicks take this series, it may take a game seven in New York, but all credit to the Celtic!  Things got a little testy after the game, players had to be separated, never good to see that.

Atlanta trails Indiana early and Houston and OKC getting underway.  Back tomorrow with those results.

For now, it is almost time for a brand new episode of Nashville on ABC.  Later…

Pop Culture – 2012 movie Hope Springs

Happened to catch movie Hope Springs with Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carrell.  This was a 2012 movie that yet again, I wanted to see, but did not get myself to the theater.  I vow to do better!

Anyhow, really funny, sad, and poignant movie about a “middle aged” married couple struggling with saving their marriage, or perhaps a better description would be, rebooting their marriage.  Great performances as always by Meryl and Tommy Lee Jones.  Steve Carrell was great as the “marriage therapist”.  Really enjoyable watch.  Happy ending.  Can’t complain, I like those!
