Tonight Show news…Leno out and Fallon in (2014)

Word is that Jay Leno, longtime host of The Tonight Show will not return when his contract expires at the end of this year.  The new host, Jimmy Fallon, current host of Late Night.  Well, you know, there does come a time when it is out with the old and in with the new!  I love both Leno and Fallon.  Word is The Tonight Show will move to NYC from LA (it has been in Los Angeles for forty years!)  This is all supposed to happen in 2014, just before NBC broadcast the Olympics.  So, who will replace Jimmy Fallon at Late Night?  Rumors are perhaps Seth Meyers?  How about Vince Vaughn?  He is one really funny guy!  Guess we will all wait and see how it plays out.

Rutgers fires head basketball coach, Mike Rice

Very ugly college basketball story, here in the days leading up to the Final Four.  Rutgers has fired Mike Rice after video tape of his practice sessions were taken to University officials and subsequently made public.  He cursed at his players and used gay slurs, shoved them, slapped them on the back of the head and threw balls at them from close range.  AWFUL!  There had been previous complaints about his “coaching tactics” and he had been suspended for three games in December 2012.  He is fired and the University is horribly embarrassed and ashamed as well they should be.  He has been on ESPN today, teary eyed and offering an apology, one hopes it is in fact sincere.  Very ugly story.

Unfortunately, another ugly story regarding former Georgia Tech guard, Javaris Crittenton.  He was one of many “one and doners’ under former coach Paul Hewitt.  He is officially indicted on charges of murder and gang activity.  Crittenton was drafted by the Lakers out of GT and played with the Wizards and the Grizzlies.  He was suspended for 38 games in 2009-10 for pulling a gun in the Wizards’ locker room.  He was involved in a dispute with Gilbert Arenas over a card game and Arenas brought four guns into the locker room and put them in front of Crittenton’s locker with a sign that said “Pick 1”.  There is of course no place for any of this nonsense in the NBA.  More recently, Crittenton is accused in the murder of a young mother of two in Atlanta with the belief being there was retaliation involved over some $50,000 worth of jewelry that was stolen from him.  This is just a horrible and heartbreaking story, what a tragic state of affairs for a once very talented and promising young man and basketball player.  As a GT fan, I am so sad and disappointed.  Of course, he is innocent until proven guilty and his defense counsel has released a statement that he will plead not guilty and that a vigorous defense of his client will take place when they have their day in court.  Moving on…

Very moving interview with Kevin Ware, the Louisville guard who suffered the gruesome broken leg injury this past Sunday.  He is from Atlanta and is looking forward to traveling with the team for this weekend’s Final Four in the Georgia Dome.  He has a wonderful attitude and it was uplifting and heartwarming to hear him speak.  Much brighter light shinning on him and his story than the two ugly stories noted above!

Shaq and Jack and many others at Staples Center, Lakers win

Shaq and Jack, together again!  What better way to sum up the electric atmosphere in the Staples Center last night as Shaquille O’Neal’s #34 jersey was officially retired and hung from the rafters, right next to non other than #32, Magic Johnson!  Shaq was honored at halftime and Phil Jackson gave a nice speech along with others.  Shaq thanked his mother, his father, his six children, former Lakers owner, the late Dr. Jerry Buss, teammates, movie stars and of course, the adoring fans.  The fan support was huge, many wearing #32 O’Neal jerseys.  Kobe and company delivered on a victory defeating the Mavs 101 – 81.  It was never close and it was important to Kobe to make Shaq proud!  Of course one reporter had to ask why he stayed in the locker room at the half, trying to stir a pot that no longer simmers.  It is all good people, they get along fine and Kobe had his mind focused on what he needed to do for an important must win game.  Kobe finished with a triple double, 23 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.  Dwight Howard had 24 points and 12 rebounds and Pau Gasol added 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Clark was huge for the Lakers in the first half coming off the bench and Steve Blake filled in nicely, starting in place of the injured Steve Nash.  The Lakers are once again in the 8th playoff spot, tied with Utah.  Seven games to go and counting…can Kobe Bryant and the Lakers deliver on that guarantee?  I hope so!

In the earlier game, Carmelo Anthony scored 50 points for the Knicks (currently in the 2nd playoff position in the East) as they rolled over the Heat in Miami, 102 – 90.  Both Wade and LeBron were on the bench in suits.

Review – Five Year Engagement

I watched the movie Five Year Engagement.  Have to say, felt like five hour engagement!  I love both Jason Segal and Emily Blount.  The movie had a great beginning and a really sweet ending.  In between, bit of a yawn.  I missed this movie at the theater.  Happened to catch it on TV and put the DVR to work.  Just finished watching it and have to say, better at home than at the theater.  Thought these two would never get it together, but hey, maybe that is real life, right?  Still, it was not what I had hoped for.  Really like these two as actors but was a bit disappointed in this movie.  Took forever for them to figure it all out.  Maybe again, that is real life but wanted things to move along a bit more.  All is well that ends well.  This movie ends well but the journey to get there left a bit to be desired.  Hopefully the next movie I catch up on well be more rewarding!

Big game in the Staples Center tonight!

Huge game in the Staples Center tonight as the Dallas Mavs face off against the LA Lakers at 10:30 pm EST.  The Lakers trail the Utah Jazz by 1/2 game for the 8th playoff spot.  The Mavs are two games behind and currently on the outside looking in as well.  The Lakers will be honoring Shaquille O’Neal and retiring his jersey, no. 34.  Should be absolutely electric in the Staples Center tonight.  Must win for Kobe Bryant and the Lakers.  Will they get it done?  I will say yes, Kobe will not want to let Shaq down and will do what Kobe does, whatever it takes.  The Lakers real problems are on defense, and they certainly miss World Peace who is out for six weeks.  They have enough offense, it is just a matter of putting it together for four periods night in and night out.  With 8 games remaining and all the emotion surrounding Shaq in the house, this game should be marked as “must see”!

Cinderella basketball team losing their coach

Florida Gulf Coast College, this year’s NCAA Tournament “Cinderella” is losing head coach Andy Enfield.  Andy and his model wife and three young children are headed to LA (lucky bunch!) and Andy will become the next head coach at USC.  From Ft. Myers, FL to Los Angeles, CA, not a bad move at all.  Congrats!

Giants fall to Dodgers 4 -0, now let’s go Braves!

Sorry good buddy Turk (see chapter 8, Beach People, in my book Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver!), defending world champs fall to the L A Dodgers, 4 -0.  Beautiful day in LA today!  Really nice day in the ATL today as well.  Bit of a dip mid week expected, but then nice weather set to return for the Final Four at the Georgia Dome.

Now, how about those Braves!  Braves take the field tonight at Turner Field for the home opener.  Hudson get the start!  Well deserved.  Chipper Jones throws out the first pitch.  Gotta love that!  Freddie Freeman homers (2 runs) in the 1st and gets RBI single in the 3rd inning.  Dan Uggla also homers off Cole Hamels in the first.  Braves up 4 – 0 midway through the 3rd!  Upton brothers in the lineup for the Braves.  Brain McCann out for at least 4 weeks.  Just think how good it will be when he returns.  Final score later…

Braves 7 – Phillies 5!  Kimbrel gets first save of the season,

Red Sox 8 – Yankees 2

Well, one of my Surviving “Paradise” buddies is happy today, opening day of MLB season!  The “prick from the northeast” who loves his Red Sox can celebrate his team’s 8 – 2 victory over the ailing Yankees.  The Yankees are a bit short handed right now, no A-Rod, Jeter, Granderson or Teixeira (former GT star!).  Still, happy for my buddy and the Red Sox.  (First loss in home opener since 1982 for the Yankees.  Yikes!)

My buddy Turk and his Giants are squaring off against the Dodgers in beautiful, sunny LA right now. Magic Johnson, part owner of the Dodgers, is in the house.  Sandy Koufax threw out the first pitch.  WOW!  He was my favorite pitcher when I was a young girl.

Phillies in the ATL to play the Braves tonight, 7:00 pm ESPN2.  GO BRAVES!
