Tennis upset in the desert – Del Potro over Djokovic

It is not an easy task to beat world no. 1 Novak Djokovic, but Juan Martin del Potro pulled off the big upset just a while ago advancing in three sets, 4 – 6, 6 -4, 6- 4.  It was 96 degrees when the match got under way and by the 9th game in the third set, del Potro was on fire.  Huge win for the Argentine who famously upset Roger Federer to claim the US Open title in 2009 and then was out a year with a serious wrist injury.  Del Potro will meet Rafael Nadal tomorrow in the final.  Nadal defeated Berdych, 6 – 4, 7 -5 in the earlier semifinal.

In the women’s final, Caroline Wozniacki (Rory Mcilroy’s girlfriend) will take on Maria Sharapova.

One celebrity split, one couple reunited

Good news, bad news.  Doesn’t it seem like that is always happening!  Danny Devito and wife Rhea Perlman have reunited after five month of separation.  They have been married over thirty years and have three grown children.  Nice to see that some time apart led to a reconciliation.

On the flip side, cute couple Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough (cutie from Dancing with the Stars and star of Safe Haven) have split after two years together.  Kind of surprised, happened to see her on Kimmel Live not too long ago and she sounded so happy.  Seacrest is of course the host of American Idol and has a radio show and produces other TV series.  Her acting career seems to be taking off and the reason given is the familiar, too much time apart.  Too bad, they were a cute couple!

Kobe said he would play and he did…

Kobe Bryant said he would play tonight in the Lakers game against the Pacers at home and he did, or at least he tried.  Kobe lasted about 12 minutes on his sprained ankle and missed all four shots he attempted.  He limped off the court and did not return.  Lakers won without him, 99 – 93.  Dwight Howard had 20 points and 12 rebounds, Steve Blake added 18 points.  So, what will Kobe do?  Likely Kobe will take the court next time the Lakers play, that is what Kobe does.  Hope he can stay healthy enough that LA makes the playoffs with Gasol due back in couple of weeks!  After all, a promise is a promise (or a guarantee to be more specific).

Tennis from the desert

Quarterfinal action today from Indian Wells, CA (really beautiful out there!) saw Djokovic easily take care of Tsonga, 6 -3, 6- 1.  In a bit of a surprise, Del Potro took out Andy Murray in three sets, 6 – 7, 6 – 3, 6 -1.  Makes me smile, Roger Federer who will not play again for seven weeks (Madrid) will stay at #2.  Murray needed to win tournament, or at least make the final to overtake him.

Semifinals set: Djokovic vs. Del Potro and Berdych vs. Nadal.

Upset Friday?

A few “upsets” today in college basketball tournaments.  Big Ten, Michigan fell to Wisconsin, 68 – 59.  Big East Tournament, Georgetown goes down to Syracuse in OT, 58 – 55.  Perhaps the biggest shocker, Duke loses to Maryland, 83 – 74.

Down go the Dukies and all the fans in Greensboro, especially the North Carolina fans, go wild.  Always interesting to see the haters, people just love to see Duke falter.  Look for Duke to do much better in the “journey to the tourney”!

Kobe Bryant now game time decision…gotta love Kobe!

Earlier this week it was reported that LA Lakers mega star Kobe Bryant was out indefinitely with a sever ankle sprain (sustained in a loss at the end of the game vs. the Atlanta Hawks).  Today, reports are that Kobe is a “game time decision” in the Lakers game tonight vs. the Indiana Pacers at the Staples Center.  Gotta love Kobe…if he can play, he will!!

Nadal over Fed in the desert…bit of a letdown

Well, the renewal of the epic rivalry between Roger Federer (GOAT in my mind!) and Rafael Nadal (making his hard court return after serious knee injury) did not quite live up to the hype.  Very disappointing, especially for me as a huge Fed fan!  In all fairness, Roger was clearly not at 100%.  One could tell just in the way he moved that his back was injured.  With two of the women withdrawing earlier in the day, Roger just has too much class to not come out and give the fans what they had paid to see, Roger vs. Rafa.  Clearly Rafa has recovered and should be a factor in the semifinals and maybe the final, still gotta go with Djokovic and Murray.  Nadal over Federer, 6 – 4, 6 -2.  Roger is playing a reduced schedule this year, so we will not get to see him as often as we did last year when he carefully structured his schedule in a manner to regain the world #1 ranking and surpass Pete Sampras (his idol) for weeks at number 1.  Hope Fed’s back heals up and we can soon see the real Roger Federer we all love and know.  Come on Fed, let’s get one more major this year!   Tale of the tape…the greatest measure of a match in men’s tennis is success on 2nd serve…Fed just could not get his serve game in gear last night, big indicator of how much his back was bothering him.

Celebrities in the crowd: Gavin Rossdale in Fed’s box, Kevin Spacey and Andre Agassi!

In the earlier quarterfinal match, Thomas Berdych halted Kevin Anderson’s spectacular run at Indian Wells, 6 – 4, 6 -4.

Cute story regarding Rory Mcilroy and Caroline Wozniacki

Apparently the couple that exercises together, stays together. Caroline Wozniacki and Rory Mcilroy love to work out and both are extremely fit, losing a bit of “baby fat” they had before becoming a couple. According to Caroline who is currently playing at the Paribas Open in Indian Wells, CA, Rory has become so obsessed with going to the gym, she sometimes wants to take a break and just rest. He wants to run and go to the gym. After finishing up in California, she and Rory plan to reunite in Miami and “work out”. They are a very cute couple!

Speaking of Wozniacki, she advances into the semifinals of the Paribas Open today as #1 seed Azarenka withdraws due to illness. Also advancing, Kerber over Sam Stosur, due to walkover.

A lot of great tennis still to come today, with the “big”one at 10:00pm EST, Nadal vs. Federer! Need I say more?
