Beautiful day for tennis in the desert

It has been an absolutely beautiful day in Indian Wells, CA for the Paribas Open Tennis Tournament, temperatures around 89 degrees plus with bright sunshine and blue skies (wish I was there!).  The action has been pretty hot as well.  Sharapova defeated Arruharrena-Vecino, 7 – 5, 6 -0 to reach the quarterfinals.  S. Errani also advanced to the quarters defeating Bartoli of France.  In men’s action, Sam Querrey defeated M. Matosevic in three sets, 7 -6, 6- 7, 7 -5.  Sam is a southern California guy and with this win he will move into the top twenty next week and become the top ranked American male tennis player.  Congrats to Querrey!  Marty Fish (American) fell to J. Tsongo in two tough sets decided by tie breaks,  6 – 7, 6 -7.  19 ranked Tommy Haas continued his strong comeback defeating 11th ranked Amalgro of Spain in three sets.  Hard serving M. Raonic advanced over M. Cilic in three sets, 3 – 6, 6 – 4, 6 – 3.  World #1 Djokovic fell behind early to Domitrov from Bulgaria but recovered  to take the first set 7 -6 and then finished with a flurry to secure the second set, 6 – 1.  Later tonight 3 Andy Murray will be featured in the night session against Y. Lu.  Also, #1 V. Azarenka will face the other Radwanska, Urszula.

New couple alert?

My gal pal Whitney Cummings was reportedly seen at a L A Kings hockey game with her boyfriend, uber talented Hollywood director, Peter Berg.  Whitney has her own sitcom on NBC which airs on Wednesdays at 8:00 pm EST and is also the creator of the Monday night hit Two Broke Girls.  She had her own once a week talk show on E Network called I Love You, Mean It /Whitney which has disappeared.  I am disappointed, it was a lot of laughs but not for the faint of heart.  Do not know if it is on hiatus and will come back or has been sent off the air.  Anyhow, Peter Berg has been behind the creation of numerous hits, not the least of which was one of the best TV shows ever that people did not appreciate enough, Friday Night Lights.  Looks like they are a happy couple for now.  Hope the best for them both!

#1 Gonzaga prevails

#1 Gonzaga won the WCC Tournament final over St. Mary’s, 61 – 55.  These two teams have met in this championship for the past five years with each having won twice until last evening, now edge goes to Gonzaga 3- 2.  Gonzaga certain to be a 1 seed in the tourney.  St. Mary’s perhaps on the bubble, will have to wait and see.

The experts predict the following number of tournament “locks” from the major basketball conferences: ACC -4 (wow, not like the golden days of old), Big East – 7, Big Ten – 5, Big 12 – 3, Pac 12 – 2, and SEC – 2 (a little different than in college football power rankings for sure).  Still, conferences tournaments yet to be played out, so selection Sunday (3/17/13) will answer all our questions.  Then we can fill out our brackets!!

Federer advances but tweaks back injury

Roger Federer advanced yesterday at the Paribas Open with a swift two set victory over Ivan Dodig, 6 -3, 6 -1.  The bad news, he appeared to tweak a long standing back injury that he deals with near the end of the match.  Hopefully, this will not be a factor for Fed moving forward.  As a matter of fact, he tweaked this injury in one his earlier matches at Wimbledon 2012, and went on to win his record 17th career Grand Slam.  This was Roger’s 890th career victory tying him with Ivan Lendl, Jimmy Connors, and Guillermo Vilas.  Fed sets and/or matches a record almost every time he takes the court these days!  Rafael Nadal advanced over L. Mayer by virtue of a walkover, Mayer having to withdraw citing, ironically, a back injury.  If Rafa wins his next match and Roger does as well, they will meet in the quarterfinals.  Sort of sounds funny, Rafa and Fed in the ‘quarters”.  One article recently referred to their rivalry as the one between the “old guy” and the “injured guy”.  Um…something tells me these two have a bit more exciting tennis in store for us should they meet!

Federer’s fellow countryman from Switzerland, Stan Wawrinka advanced over Leyton Hewitt, 6 -4, 7 -5.  On the ladies side, the first seed Victoria Azarenka (remember the Williams sisters do not play this tournament for reasons we don’t really need to go into) took three sets to overcome Belgian opponent Kristen Flipkens, 3 – 6, 6 – 3, 6 -0.  Wonder if her boyfriend Redfoo has made it back to the desert after taking in the Lakers game this past Sunday?  As a matter of fact, yes he has, as he was in the stands cheering her on!

Speaking of the Lakers, Dwight Howard and the Lakers take on the Orlando Magic tonight in Orlando.  Will be interesting to see how Dwight’s former team and their fans “welcome” him back!  GO LAKERS!

Good news for the Atlanta Falcons (and their fans)

Fantastic news today for Atlanta Falcons and their fans.  All world TE Tony Gonzalez wants to come back for yet another year!!  He has instructed his agent to go ahead and negotiate a contract with Atlanta for another year.  He wants a ring, folks, don’t you think!  So do Falcon fans!  So happy to hear this news!  This will be Tony’s 17th year in the NFL.

NFL trade

Update:  The Minnesota Vikings have traded Percy Harvin (former Univ. of Florida star) to the Seattle Seahawks.  Gotta love Pete Carroll and his philosophy!  He must feel the need for some speed!  Guess the credit really goes to the Seahawks’ front office.

College Basketball Polls

A new week, new college basketball polls!

AP Poll: 1 Gonzaga, 2 Indiana, 3 Duke, 4 Kansas, 5 Georgetown, 6 Miami, 7 Michigan, 8 Louisville, 9 Kansas State, and 10 Michigan State.  (#11 Florida)

USA Coaches Poll: 1 Gonzaga, 2 Indiana, 3 Kansas, 4 Duke, 5 Georgetown, 6 Miami, 7 Michigan, 8 Louisville, 9 Kansas State, and 10 Michigan State.

A few discrepancies, nothing to get too worked up about!  It is championship week as the conference tourneys get under way later this week.  Much to look forward to!

Some harsh words between Indiana head coach Tom Crean and Michigan assistant coach Jeff Meyer after Indiana just got by Michigan State this past weekend, 72 – 71.  Then of course, an apology.  There is some bad blood here due to the NCAA sanctions Crean inherited when he took over at Indiana.  He had some harsh words for former Indiana assistant Meyer.  Really?  This kind of nonsense just never stops does it?  Get over it, move on, enjoy the moment.  Indiana is likely a #1 seed and things are going great for you!  I love one of the comments, this is about college coaching, not life saving heart surgery.  Some perspective perhaps?

Myself, I love college basketball.  That being said, I am getting myself pumped to watch Roger Federer play in the Paribas Open at beautiful Indian Wells, CA later today.  I guess we all have our priorities!

Tennis updates from Indian Wells

Both 3 Murray and 1 Djokovic needed three sets to secure victories in their opening matches at the Paribas Open at Indian Wells, CA.  Murray prevailed over Donskoy 5 -7, 6 -2, 6 -2 and Djokovic defeated Italy’s Fognini 6 -0, 5 -7, 6 -2.  Interesting that both needed three sets to take their opening matches.  (Federer and Nadal both won in straight sets the day before).  I am just saying…

Also, Del Potro advanced over Davydenko in straight sets, 6 – 3, and 6 -4 after being down 0 – 3 in the second set.

Sharapova took care of Navarro but not without some difficulty, 7 – 5, 6 -4.

Tsonga just now taking the court out on the west coast.  Federer and Nadal in action tomorrow.  Stay tuned…

Tiger wins at Doral!

The leaderboard at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral Country Club was an ever changing group throughout the final round today.  One constant remained, Tiger Woods sat atop the pack.  When all was said and done, Tiger, inspite of bogeying two of the final three holes, was the two shot winner at -19.  In second was his “putting coach” and friend, Steve Sticker at -17.  Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott, Graeme McDowell (playing with Tiger), and Phil Mickelson finished tied for third at -14.  Tiger led the whole way, and when Tiger is in the lead on the final day, well, 9 times out of 10 he is going to finish in first.  Great weekend of golf for Tiger Woods!  The Donald and his daughter Ivanka were on hand to present the trophy!  Nice to see Tiger holding up the trophy on Sunday wearing his traditional red shirt.

World #1 Rory Mcilroy finally got his game together today and finished at -10, but too little, too late.  World #2 Tiger Woods is the winner today and one has to wonder, how long before he is again world #1?
