Tiger wins at Doral!

The leaderboard at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral Country Club was an ever changing group throughout the final round today.  One constant remained, Tiger Woods sat atop the pack.  When all was said and done, Tiger, inspite of bogeying two of the final three holes, was the two shot winner at -19.  In second was his “putting coach” and friend, Steve Sticker at -17.  Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott, Graeme McDowell (playing with Tiger), and Phil Mickelson finished tied for third at -14.  Tiger led the whole way, and when Tiger is in the lead on the final day, well, 9 times out of 10 he is going to finish in first.  Great weekend of golf for Tiger Woods!  The Donald and his daughter Ivanka were on hand to present the trophy!  Nice to see Tiger holding up the trophy on Sunday wearing his traditional red shirt.

World #1 Rory Mcilroy finally got his game together today and finished at -10, but too little, too late.  World #2 Tiger Woods is the winner today and one has to wonder, how long before he is again world #1?

Kobe – Howard clicking in LA!

The newly defined partnership of Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard is clicking on all cylinders in LA.  The Lakers defeated the Chicago Bulls today, 90 – 81.  They are now in sole position of the 8th spot (remember we were given a guarantee they would make the playoffs by Kobe, Dwight and Nash!) and trail Houston in the 7th spot by 1/2 a game.  Kobe scored 19 points with 9 assists and 7 rebounds, Howard had 16 points and 21 rebounds, while Nash added 16 points.  World Peace threw in 12 points and Meeks added 11 off the bench.  Star power was abundant in the Staples Center with Jack in attendance (of course), Andy Garcia, Emily Rossum (Shameless) and Redfoo, lead singer for LMFAO and boyfriend of Victoria Azarenka.  He must have driven down from Indian Well, Ca where Azarenka is in action at the Paribas Open to take in a bit of basketball.  The Lakers are on a roll, let’s see if they can keep it up!

Earlier, the OKC Thunder beat Boston, 91 – 70 with Kevin Durant having an “average” scoring performance of 23 points.

In college basketball, 2 Indiana holds off 7 Michigan, 72 – 71 to claim outright Big Ten regular season championship.  Heck of a college basketball game.

Really a lot going on today folks, hard to keep up with it all!  Golf and tennis report up next!

Catching up on some Saturday night sports…

Catching up on some of the later sports action on Saturday night…3 Duke took care of North Carolina on the road with relative ease, 69 – 53.  With Ryan Kelly back in the lineup for the Dukies, they are going to be a tough out in the “tourney”.  Miami clinched the ACC regular season title with yesterday’s victory over Clemson.  Look for Duke to perhaps win the ACC Tournament title and get #1 seed?  Also, current #1 Gonzaga struggled early but came on late to beat Loyola Marymount, 66 – 48.

In late action at Paribas Open at Indian Wells, CA, #1 Azarenka came back from a 4 -1 deficit in the first set to defeat D. Hantuchova, 6 – 4, 6 -1.  Rafael Nadal making his return to hard court action struggled in the first set with American Ryan Harrison needing a tie break to prevail and went on to win the match, 7 – 6, 6- 2.

1 Djokovic and 3 Murray will make their Indian Wells debut later today!

All Hail Roger Federer

Beautiful day today in the desert in southern California.  Roger Federer was on display in all his glory as he dispatched of Dennis Istomin in short order, 6 -2, 6-3.  The GOAT (that would be greatest of all time) was on his game in his opening match of this tournament which he has won four times and in attendance was wife, Mirka and also his two twin daughters.  So sweet!!  Very family friendly environment at this tournament.

In other action today, another “old” guy Leyton Hewitt of Australia ousted American John Isner 6 -7, 6 – 3, 6- 4.  Very disappointing for Isner who played Federer in last year’s final.  The 4th seed David Ferrer (seeded 4th due to Rafa’s absence from competition) also fell to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in three sets.

Federer’s countryman Stan Wawrinka advanced over W. Odesnik (USA) in three sets, 3 -6, 6 – 2, 6 -1.  Next up for Federer is J. Benneteau who has been problematic in the past.  This match will take place in two days, (Monday).  Later tonight, Rafael Nadal will make his return to action on the hard courts.  If Rafa and Roger both continue on, they could meet in the quarterfinals.  Also in action, #1 seed Victoria Azarenka.

Saturday college basketball updates

Georgia Tech lost a heartbreaker today at Boston College, 74 – 72.  Final regular season game for the Jackets.  Maybe they can surprise some people next week in the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, NC??

6 Miami took care of Clemson, 62 – 49.  8 Louisville thumped 24 Notre Dame, 73 – 57.  13 Oklahoma State “upset” 9 Kansas State, 76 – 70.  4 Kansas took a huge loss at Baylor, 81 – 58 (RG III was in the house!), 5 Georgetown beat 17 Syracuse, 61 – 39 (polite way of putting it!) and clinches a share of the Big East regular season title.  Kentucky took care of 11 Florida at home, 61 – 57.  Does this put Kentucky back in the tourney?  Hard to say, gotta wait and see what happens in the conference tourneys!

Tonight at 8:30pm EST, 3 Duke at North Carolina!

Also, on Tennis Channel at Paribas Open, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in action.  Federer leading D. Istomin 5 -2 in the first set as we speak!

Tiger Woods – leader of the pack after round 2

Tiger Woods sits alone atop the leaderboard at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in Miami, FL after round 2, shooting a score of 65 and sitting at -13 currently.  Tiger has 17 birdies after two rounds of golf, a first for him in his long and illustrious career.  A round of 66 yesterday and a round of 65 today have Tiger smiling and leading the pack.  Now, let’s see if he can close it out tomorrow and Sunday?  Close on his heels, Graeme McDowell is at -11, Phil Mickelson and Steve Stricker (Tiger’s new “putting coach”) are both tied for third at -10, Bubba Watson is at -9 and Charles Schwartzel and Keegan Bradley are at -8.

Tiger (#2 in the world) played for the second day with Luke Donald (#3 in the world) and Rory Mcilroy (#1 in the world).  Talk about a dream threesome!  Donald double bogeyed the 18th hole and sits at +2.  Rory started to come on strong on the back nine and came to the 18th hole at -3.  He bogeyed the hole, finishing the day at -2 shooting a round of 69, his first round in the sixties so far this year.  There is no cut line in this tournament so all 65 players in the field will be around for the weekend.  Looking forward to joining them for the weekend!  Coverage moves to NBC tomorrow, starting at 2:00 pm EST.

I love LA!

Moving back to something I can wrap my mind around without a lot of confusion, I love LA!  The Paribas Open gets underway in Palm Springs, CA and it is the biggest tennis tournament in the world out of the four Major Grand Slam events.  It would be near the top of my bucket list to make a trip out west and see this event.  Unfortunately, I do not know if I will make it in time to see what is at the top of my bucket list, see Roger Federer play in person before he retires!  Well, he will be there this upcoming weekend, next week and into next weekend (hopefully) along with all the other top players in the world on both the men’s and women’s side of tennis.  Coverage begins today on Tennis Channel and will continue for eight days.  The semifinals and finals will then switch over to major network coverage.  I wonder if Fed’s good buddy Gavin Rossdale and his wife Gwen Stafani will be in attendance.  They usually are.  What about actor Ben Stiller and his wife, supporting Rafael Nadal.  This is just so cool!!!

Speaking of LA, Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant was on Jimmy Kimmel last night.  We all know I am a Lakers fan and a Kobe fan.  Kimmel asked Kobe if he had any misgivings about guaranteeing the world that the Lakers would make the playoffs, and did any of his teammates in the locker room look  at him and say, NO, do not go there!  Gotta love Kobe’s response.  Kobe said NO!  Moreover, if anyone on the roster had a problem with that kind of proactive attitude, he would immediately call the Buss family (owners) and tell them, this guy has got to go, NOW….LOVE IT!!!  Go Lakers!
