Tennis action from Dubai

The world number 1 (Djokovic) and the world number 2 (Federer) looked tres impressive in today’s quarterfinal matches in Dubai.  Djokovic dispatched A Seppi, 6 – 0, 6 -3.  Then Federer took care of Davydenko in 49 minutes, 6 -2, 6-2.  Both looked very sharp today.  Really impressed with Federer who has looked better and better with each match.  First serve percentage up to 76% today!!  Tomorrow’s semifinal action lines up as follows: first up, 1 Djokovic vs. 4 Del Potro then followed by 2 Federer vs. 3 Berdych.  Berdych has given Federer trouble in the past, but hopefully not tomorrow (as you know, I am all about Fed!).  Should both Federer and Djokovic prevail that would set up the dream final on Saturday between #1 and #2.  Favorite sign in the crowd today, TGI Federer!!!  Great parody on  TGI Friday!  Thank God it is Federer…Love it!  (Of course I do realize today is Thursday)

CBB – another top 5 team goes down on the road

Wednesday night college basketball and another top 5 team bites the dust on the road.  The Big Ten is something else this year, I gotta say!  4 Michigan falls to Penn State, 84 – 78 with Penn State winning their first Big Ten game of the year.  5 Miami ran all over Virginia Tech, 76 – 58 and looks forward to their visit on Saturday to Cameron Indoor Stadium to take on 3 Duke.  (Duke is in action tonight against Virginia, on the road!).  7 Georgetown outlasted U Conn in double OT, 79 – 78.  And I know it is not 25 action, but Georgia Tech hammered Maryland at home last night, 78 – 68.  The score sounds closer than it actually was.  GT looked really good at home, Robert Carter, Jr. aced a double double.  Also impressive for the Jackets Brandon Reed, Kam Holsey, Daniel Miller, Marcus Georges-Hunt.  They are a young team mixed with a couple of juniors and one senior.  Brian Gregory has the team moving in the right direction (especially in the classroom).  GT is likely a year away from being once again competitive in the ACC.  Looking forward to it after the tough years GT round ball fans have endured…remember the glory days of Bobby Cremins, even the early Hewitt years?

What is special about Wednesday? Oh, Surviving “Paradise” day

It is Wednesday.  What is special about Wednesday?  Well, probably a lot of things for a lot of people!  ABC hit drama Nashville is on tonight at 10:00 pm EST.  (recap tomorrow)  GT hosts Maryland in ACC basketball.  No, wait there is something else…

It is plug my book day!  Check out Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver at Amazon.com.  It is available in paperback for $9.99 and kindle edition for $3.03 (by the way, it is complete in it’s content and the format is great, really!!!!!).  It is also available at Barnes and Noble nook for $4.99.  Very funny and entertaining read, witty satire about a Southern woman who relocates to southwest Florida only to be met by a ridiculous set of people and circumstances.  Can’t make this kind of crazy up, people!  Read it, review it, and tell your friends about it!  Thanks.

Pop Culture news…couple of celebrity breakups

Frown A couple of celebrity breakups are in the news today.  First Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) and Michael Sheen, the Welsh actor who was with the gorgeous Kate Beckinsale for eight years and is the father of their fourteen year old daughter, Lily, have parted ways.   These two had dated for two years and seemed oh, so happy, don’t they always?  Anyhow, now Notebook fans everywhere can hope for a Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling reunion…one problem, he has been happily paired with Eve Mendes.  Still, it is Hollywood, so anything is possible!

Michelle Williams and Jason Segal (Two and a Half Men) have reportedly broken up after a year.  Everyone was pulling for these two.  After the tragic death of the uber talented Heath Ledger, Michelle’s former beau and father of their daughter Matilda, it seemed like she had at last found true love.  Alas, it is not to be.  Sometimes I think we project onto these movies stars out own ideas of happiness that actually have nothing to do with the reality of their lives.  They are, at the end of the day, regular people just like you and me.  Stay tuned…unfortunately this kind of news never stops…

A bit of football news

Starting in the NFL, former starting QB Alex Smith of the 49ers who lost his job to Colin Kaepernick has been traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.

College football news: Reserve TE Ty Flournay-Smith of UGA was arrested on a misdemeanor charges.  This one is a gem!  He reported that his text books had been stolen.  Further investigation revealed that he had in fact taken the books to a local book buying company and sold them himself!  This is too good, (OK, I am a Georgia Tech fan)!  He was booked and released on $1000. bond.  He later tweeted something about live and learn…

How about beware Ohio State…The SI curse?  Ohio State QB Braxton Miller and Heisman hopeful is on the cover of Sports Illustrated.  Oh, no!  Things never seem to go well after the SI cover…believe or not believe, it is up to you.  At any rate, Ohio State is very highly ranked in all of the preseason college football rankings.  (not always the best barometer anyway)  Still, Ohio State is expecting big things this year under Urban Meyer in his second year.  Might would have thought twice about that SI cover.

More round ball news, 8 Gators fall

On a night which saw both 1 Indiana go down on the road to Minnesota and 19 Memphis lose on the road to Xavier (halting the 19 game win streak Memphis had rolling), it is only fitting to see SEC powerhouse 8 Florida fall on the road as well, losing to Tennessee 64 – 62.  This has been one wacky year so far in college basketball, common theme being if you get to be #1, you will likely lose, perhaps get back to #1, then lose again.  Also, it is hard to win on the road!!

Switching to the NBA, how about the dynamic duo in Miami, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James.  The two combined for 79 points last night in Miami’s OT win over Sacramento, 141- 129 (sounds like more of a OT blowout).  LeBron had 40 points and 16 assists and Wade added 39 points.  This marked a season high for both.

Elsewhere, it got a bit ugly, as once again we have an incident involving grown men behaving badly.  The Pacers defeated the Warriors, 108 – 97.  But there was another round of pushing, shoving, technical fouls and then an ejection.  This time Roy Hibbert did not appreciate the shove he received under the basket from David Lee, and from there other players began to react and overreact.  Ultimately, Hibbert was assessed two technical fouls and ejected.  This was actually tame compared to some other “brawls” that have occurred in the NBA this year; the real dangerous aspect was that it spilled into the crowd at the corner underneath the basket.  Fortunately, no one was injured, and once again people we must ask ourselves, What would Kobe do?  Again, not this but Kobe does have 13 technical fouls this year, three shy of the 16 that would result in a one game suspension.  Hope he keeps it in check because the Lakers cannot afford to have him out as they are already missing Pau Gasol.
