Federer advances in Dubai

2 Roger Federer advanced today into the quarterfinals of the Dubai Open with a straight set victory over Spain’s M. Granollers, 6 – 3, 6 -4.  Still sporting the snazzy tennis shoes with the bright pink laces, Roger looked much sharper and crisper today than in his opening match.  His first serve percentage improved to 60% (from 55%).  Still needs to be higher to compete with the likes of Djokovic.  Fed will play Davydenko in the quarters, his 8the quarterfinal appearance at this tournament.

In other tennis news, rumor is Rafael Nadal has hinted that he might skip Indian Wells to protect his fragile knees with the clay court season looming, especially the French Open which he has won seven times.  The Paribas Open at Indian Wells is a hard court event and Rafa has spoken out about the number of tournaments on hard courts and the problems it creates for the players and their bodies.  In all fairness, Rafa’s style of play is likely the biggest contributing factor to his knee problems but still would hate to see him not compete at Indian Wells.  Was looking forward to all of the big four reconvening at this event in early March.  Hope it will still happen!

Tuesday tennis results from Dubai Open

Roger Federer did not play today, he will be in action tomorrow.  World #1 Djokovic was in action today at the Dubai Open and he had little trouble with V. Troicki, advancing 6 – 1, 6 – 4.  Other results included 4 J. Martin del Potro over M. Baghdatis, 4 – 6, 7 – 6, 7 – 6; 5 Tsonga falling to M. Llodra in an upset, 6 – 7, 2 – 6; in a surprise and an upset, 6 Tipsarevic lost to Davydenko 0 -6, 5 – 7; and 3 Thomas Berdych advanced over R. Ram 6 -1, 4 – 3, retired.

Tomorrow it is Roger Federer time!  Hope he is looking in better form than in his first match where he struggled a bit with his first serve percentage.  The final of this event is scheduled to take place on Saturday.  Will we get a Federer – Djokovic final?

#1 Indiana in action tonight (CBB)

#1 Indiana is in action tonight in college basketball taking on Minnesota on the road.  The game is on ESPN at 7:00 pm EST.  Will the Hoosiers survive?  I am gonna say yes, they will win on the road.  Stay tuned…

Other college basketball news, 3 Duke ‘s Ryan Kelly is expected to return from his injury for the last few games of the regular season.  Good news for the Dukies.  Big game at Cameron Indoor Stadium this Saturday when 5 Miami will visit.  Duke will be looking to avenge the thumping they took from the Canes in Miami earlier this year!

UPDATE:  Call me maybe, no, call me wrong!!  Minnesota upsets 1 Indiana 77 – 73.  Shows the depth of the Big Ten and again, just how hard it is to win on the road in college basketball this year.  Also, 19 Memphis falls on the road to Xavier, 64 – 62.  6 Florida in action on the road at Tennessee.  It is only Tuesday…who will be no. 1 in next Monday’s polls?

Tiger and Rory engage in a bit of match play of their own

The world number 1 and 2 are both in Palm Beach Garden, FL preparing for the upcoming Honda Classic which gets underway this week on Thursday.  1 Rory Mcilroy is the defending champion.  He and 2 Tiger Woods decided to have a little match play of their own this past Sunday as both were eliminated in the first round of the WGC Accenture Match Play in Arizona.  They played 36 holes and Tiger won the first 18 with Rory taking the second round of 18 holes.  Gotta love the way these two top ranked golfers, “old and the new”, really enjoy each other and get along.  Hope both of these guys can hang around for all four days of this event!  Just makes it more exciting.

Lakers fall on the road in Denver

The LA Lakers fell on the road in Denver last night, 119 – 108.  Would like to have seen the Lakers win this one as they make a huge push to get into the playoffs.  Still, having won 11 of their past 16 games and with two upcoming homes games against Minnesota and Atlanta, both very winnable, still gotta believe Kobe and company will deliver on their promise.  Kobe Bryant scored 29 points, had 6 rebounds and 9 assists in the losing effort.  Dwight Howard had 15 points and 14 rebounds and Steve Nash added 16 points and 5 assists.

Former Lakers guard Derek Fisher just inked a deal with OKC Thunder (Kevin Durant and company).

Exciting game last night in Utah as the Celtic rallied to defeat the Jazz on the road in OT, 110 – 107.

What has become of I Love You, Mean It/Whitney

The new talk show I Love You, Mean It/Whitney was airing at 10:30pm EST on E channel before Chelsea Lately.  Where has it gone?  It was MIA last week and is not on the schedule for this week.  Where has my gal/pal Whitney gone?  Is she on hiatus?   Or was Whitney and her unabashed in your face comedy just too much?  I don’t know but I miss her!  I can see where this was not every night material.  But hey, once a week?  Come on people, it was great entertainment.  If her show has been cancelled, I am disappointed!  Maybe she is just taking a break and will be back to entertain us as only Whitney can.  We shall see…
