MLB news, NY Yankees suffer another loss

The New York Yankees suffered yet another loss this past week when Curtis Granderson went down with a fractured right forearm.  He was struck by a pitch from J. A. Happ in his first at bat in spring training.  Gee, talk about some bad luck!  Derek Jeter is questionable for opening day as he recovers from a broken ankle that required surgery during the off season.  A Rod is still rehabbing from his off season hip surgery and not expected back until July.  Granderson should be back by May.  Still, not good news for the Yankees.

Kobe outduels Dirk, Lakers edge Mavs

Kobe Bryant scored 38 points, had 12 rebounds and 7 assists and the Lakers edged out the Dallas Mavericks in Dallas, 103 – 99.  Dirk Nowitzki returning from an injured knee scored 30 points with 13 rebounds.  This was a huge win for the Lakers, especially on the road where they have really struggled to win.  Wonder if Mark Cuban, Mavs owner, still thinks the Lakers should consider trading Kobe?  Both teams are making a late season push to edge into playoff position, trailing the Houston Rockets, currently in the 8th spot, by 2.5 games and 3.5 games respectively.  Kobe, Nash and Howard have all guaranteed a trip to the postseason for the Lakers.  If they continue this kind of play, they will make good on that promise.  The game was close throughout, three technical fouls were called, one on Kobe (his 13th of the year), and one on Dirk.  Both a bit questionable.  Kobe was on fire in the 4th period, hitting three points shots and outmaneuvering defenders left and right.  Nash did his usual terrific job of distributing the ball (returning to the arena where he played so many seasons) scoring 20 points and Howard added 13 rebounds and 9 points.  He also made some crucial free throws down the stretch.

Great win for the Lakers.  They face another road test tomorrow in Denver.

Last night the Heat won their tenth in a row, defeating the 76ers 114 – 90.  LeBron had a triple double.

Hey, LeBron may be the “King”, but Kobe rules!  I am unapologetically a Lakers fan, a Kobe fan, and also a Pau Gasol fan (currently out due to injury).  I still believe…go Lakers!

Busy Sunday afternoon in sports!

Busy Sunday afternoon in sports!  Lakers and Dallas are in a tight one at the end of 3rd period, Lakers lead 79 – 75.  Both teams are in hot pursuit of a playoff sport, trying to chase down Houston for the 8th position.

Daytona 500 is underway and the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona is in the final stage of play with Matt Kuchar vs. Hunter Mahan (defending champion).  Earlier in semifinal play, Kuchar advanced over Poulter and Mahan defeated Jason Day.

Back later with final results on these events!

Independent Spirit Awards

Always good to see talent rewarded!  Happened again last night in Santa Monica, CA at the Independent Spirit Awards (held at their usual venue, a tent on the beach in Santa Monica).  I have been there and it so gorgeous and peaceful!  Anyhow, Silver Linings Playbook won four well deserved awards.  Jennifer Lawrence won best actress, David O. Russell won the award for best screenplay and best director, and Silver Linings Playbook took home the award for best picture.  This is the last “show” before the big show tonight, The Academy Awards.  I expect Jennifer Lawrence to win the Oscar for Best Actress.  I still think Argo will win out for Best Picture (and should).  As far as Best Director, with the glaring oversight of omitting Ben Affleck, David O. Russell certainly has a shot in that category.  Will have to wait until late tonight to see who wins that honor.

Back to the Spirit Awards, Matthew McConaughey won best supporting actor for his role in Magic Mike.  Bit of a surprise to me although I do love Matthew McConaughey.  Just not that great a movie or role for him, he has done much better work.  The Sessions earned two awards, one for John Hawkes as a man in an iron lung wanting to lose his virginity, and Helen Hunt as the woman who helps him through the process.

One of the great stories of the night, director David O. Russell’s son, Matthew who suffers from bi-polar disease was in the crowd to see his father accept the best director award.  Matthew was his father’s inspiration for this film!  Now that is a feel good story!

Horrific crash at end of Nationwide opener at Daytona 500

The Nationwide opener at Daytona ended with a horrible crash.  Four drivers were involved, Regan Smith, Brad Keselowski, Bowman and Kyle Larsen.  Larsen’s car was shredded and part of his car went through the safety fence, including the engine.    Fifteen people were injured.  Four received minor injuries and eleven were transported to the hospital with more serious injuries, one critical and undergoing surgery.  Tony Stewart won the race and Sam Hornish, Jr. (Indy race car driver who moved over to NASCAR) finished second.  Pole setter Danica Patrick did not finish, reason listed as engine trouble.  Awful way for this race to end!
