Lefty just misses shooting a 59 in Scottsdale

Phil Mickelson just missed becoming only the sixth player in PGA tour history to shoot a 59, barely missing a 25 foot birdie putt on the par 4 9th hole (his last for the round on day 1) at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.  Instead, he had to settle for a round of 60, a new course record, which was previously set by him eight years ago.  Nice to see Lefty have such a great round of golf as he has been struggling a bit of late.  Play resumes tomorrow out in the desert.

Well, you just knew there had to be some scandal

Super Bowl week.  All the craziness, the almost too much coverage from New Orleans on every sports show on both TV and radio, and it was inevitable there would be something “salacious”.  Well, Dan Marino (former Dolphin great) who will be part of the CBS broadcast team for this Sunday’s Super Bowl has confirmed he fathered a ‘love child”.  I am not going to dwell on the story, he apparently had a relationship with a 35 year old production assistant at the network and she got pregnant some years ago (2005).  He payed her to keep it quiet and has taken care of the child and her mother (really taken good care of them, to the tune of millions).  Probably not the best day for his wife of thirty years and six children.  Expect this story to just sort of go away by game time (as well it should).

No Daniel Craig in sequel to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?

No, it just cannot work without him.  Rumor has it that Daniel Craig may not play the role of Mikael Bloomkvist in the next installment of the movie series based on the popular best selling books by Stieg Larsson.  The next movie would be The Girl Who Played With Fire (I personally thought this was the best of the three, all were fantastic!).  Something about not be able to agree on a pay increase, blah, blah, blah etc.  There is actually talk of not casting anyone to play Bloomkvist and just having the movie focus on Lisbeth Salander played by Rooney Mara.  Do not see how they can pull that off.  I watched the Swedish versions of all three of these stories, they were exceptional as were the books.  Was pleasantly surprised when I saw the American version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, did not think it could measure up to the excellent Swedish version.  I thought Daniel Craig was perfect for the role of Bloomkvist.  Hope they work this out because I do not see this living up to it’s potential without Bloomkvist in the movie role for installment #2 of the trilogy.

Couple of ACC basketball results from last night

5 Duke overcame a tenacious effort by the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to get an ACC road win last night, 75 – 70.  Mason Plumlee and Seth Curry combined for over fifty points (Plumlee 32, Curry 21).

14 Miami, a surprise team both nationally and in the ACC (undefeated) won a road game in Blacksburg, defeating Virginia Tech, 73 – 64.  Did anyone see this coming from Miami?

Snowmobile Rider Caleb Moore dies at age of 25

Snowmobile rider Caleb Moore passed away earlier today after participating in this past weekend’s Winter X games in Aspen, CO.  Moore was 25 years old.  He died from injuries sustained in an accident which occurred while performing a move he has done numerous times successfully.  It was originally thought that he suffered a concussion but in fact his injuries proved to be much more serious.  His death was attributed to both brain and heart trauma.  Very Sad!!!

Lakers fall, Dwight hurt again

The LA Lakers lost to the Phoenix Suns last night, 92 – 86, unable to survive a furious fourth period comeback and Dwight Howard reinjured his shoulder to boot!  This marked Coach D’Antoni and Steve Nash’s return to the team they had previously experienced some great highs with and the Phoenix crowd gave them a warm ovation (at least Steve Nash for sure).  Kobe Bryant finished with 17 points and 9 assists.  Good night for Kobe but not the way the Lakers wanted to begin their seven game road trip!

CBB – GT loses a heartbreaker on the road

Georgia Tech fell to Clemson at Little John Coliseum last night, 63 – 60.  It was a heartbreaking defeat for GT who played their hearts out on the road and trailed by one (61 – 60) with 17. 2 seconds left in the game.  Jackets fall to 1- 6 in ACC play, 11- 8 overall while Clemson is at 4- 4 in ACC play.  It is hard to win on the road people!!  Team to watch out for that people are just starting to talk about a little bit, Miami, undefeated in ACC play, now ranked and the team that took down the Dukies.  It is still early, a lot of college basketball to be played on the journey to the tourney, which ends with the Final Four in the ATL!
