How about my Jackets!

Golf tournament in a delay due to fog and inclement weather in California, so let’s take a look at some college basketball from Atlanta, GA as Georgia Tech demolishes Wake Forest in the McCamish Pavilion, 82 – 62.  Way to go Jackets!  How about Robert Carter, Jr.!  GT was in complete control of this game, starting out with a 16 – 0 early run.  GT never trailed and like I said in an earlier post, the Jackets would hopefully win an ACC game once they faced a lesser tier ACC opponent.  This was more than true.  GT was very impressive in this victory, completely dominating and now they are 1 -5 in ACC action.  OK, I know, does not sound so good, but overall they are 11 – 7 and 9 – 2 at home.  Daniel Miller, GT center actually leads the ACC in blocked shots, averaging between two and three per game.  All is not bad for the Jackets this year, they can win some games and they proved it today.  Proud to be GT fan!

In other ACC action today, Duke thumped Maryland on the road, 84 – 64 and Virginia defeated BC 65 – 51.  Tonight, NC takes on NC State.  Should be a good one!

Look for Michigan to move up to #1 in Monday’s polls after Duke loss earlier this week and Michigan victory over Purdue.

The city known for perfect weather, not so much this weekend

The Farmers Insurance Golf Tournament was set to get underway for day three action in La Jolla, Ca, just outside beautiful San Diego, CA, the city know for having the “perfect weather”.  Not this weekend.  Heavy fog set in, along with a continuing misty rain and action has been postponed.  Major disappointment as we all wanted to see just how would Tiger Woods, currently atop the leaderboard at -11 ,show up for weekend play.  Guess we will wait it out and see what happens.  Just goes to show that all that glitters is not gold.  Still gotta say, I am a big fan of all things west coast, LA, Santa Monica, etc.  In the meantime, I have switched over to watching some ACC Basketball from non other than Atlanta, GA where GT is playing Wake Forest! See my next post and stay tuned for golf action…

Manti Te’o story and someone please just make it go away!

OK, I have really wanted to not even address this Manti Te’o story that has become such a national obsession.  With the Lance Armstrong story coming out, I made one post, and that was all I intend to say on that matter.  This one, I have just wanted to avoid, for a number of reasons, not the least of which is I do not think we need to care about it.  With Manti being on Katie Couric, Fox News talking nonstop about it, and now word that one of the alleged participants in the scam will be on Dr. Phil, it just begs some kind of mention.  So, here goes!  I do not care what the real story behind this whole sad saga is.  If Manti Te’o was in fact duped by an online scam, which I believe he at least in some part was, then so what?  He is a nice, well mannered young man from Hawaii, somewhat naive ( I believe), and a tremendous football talent who finished second in this past year’s Heisman Trophy voting and has a bright future ahead of him playing on Sundays.  Was the girl he talked to on the phone really a girl?  Was it sometimes a girl, sometimes a guy impersonating the girl?  WHO CARES!!!  If there is anything I would say about this, it is that perhaps looking for relationships on a computer is not the best course of action, certainly when one is a twenty one year old college student surrounded by all kinds of social opportunities.  I think this could also apply to people of all ages actually, but again, to each his own.  The bottom line is this; I think he is basically a good kid (key word) and he is embarrassed and humiliated to some extent.  Why would he need to seek attention, he is a star athlete, he has had all kinds of attention.  I feel like this story just makes one begin to ramble, it is so nonsensical.  In the words that I am well known for saying in my book Surviving “Paradise”, shut the blank up!  People, get a life and move on from this story.  I don’t care and neither should you!

Did I see that correctly? Lakers win

Well, well, the losing streak has finally come to an end for the troubled LA Lakers as they defeated the Jazz last night, 102 – 84.  This was also a road win.  Kobe Bryant came within one of completing a triple double, 14 points, 9 rebounds, 14 assists, along with 3 steals for good measure.  Little different performance for Kobe, not the high scoring night like he has had so often, but something about this formula seemed to work for the Lakers.  Now, can they keep it up?

Party in the house for Azarenka down under

With her good buddy, lead singer from LMFAO cheering her own, 1 Azarenka won her second Australian Open title, defeating Li Na in three sets, 4 – 6, 6- 4, 6 – 3.  By winning the title, she will remain at #1 in the world and Serena Williams will move up to #2.  The match was full of drama and the crowd was very much in support of Li Na.  The ten minute injury timeout Azarenka took in her match against American Sloane Stephens in the quarterfinals has been criticized and not won her the love of the Aussie crowd.  Non the less, Azarenka prevailed in a match that had a ten minute delay for fireworks (Australia Independence Day celebration) and saw Li Na suffer two falls, one very scary, rolling an ankle in each fall and banging her head on the court in the second fall as well.  Na came back from both mishaps and continued, even winning  the next four games she played after her first fall.  Clearly, she was affected and Azarenka picked up her game as well in the second and third set.  Bit of the bizarre, but still congrats to world no. 1 Azarenka.  I was pulling for Li Na and hopefully this will be a launching board for her to play at this higher and more consistently great level for the rest of the season.

Tiger surges to the lead at Torrey Pines

Tiger Woods had a tremendous round of golf today at a very rainy Torrey Pines in La Jolla, CA (gee, I guess it is winter and there can be some yucky weather everywhere) and is now at the top of the leaderboard at -11.  He came in today with a round of seven under par.  He played with Rickie Fowler (so cute) who is in at -2 so it looks like he will make the cut (currently projected to be at -2).  Mickelson is at -3 and is still on the course.  Three players are at -8.  Stay tuned…

Mickelson falls to -1 but cut moves back to -1 as well.  Will be sorted out tomorrow.  So now, which Tiger will show up for the weekend?   Hopefully the Tiger we saw today!

Matt Damon gets his revenge!

For anyone who did not see Matt Damon on the Jimmy Kimmel Show last night, it is must see TV.  It was hilarious!!  If nothing else, watch some of the the clips on YouTube and other websites.  Matt Damon took Jimmy hostage, tied him up in a chair and used Jimmy’s tie as a gag.  He then proceeded to “hijack” his show.  The monologue was to die for!  He renames the show Jimmy Kimmel blank (you know what I mean, fill in the blank, it rhymes with ducks!).  He smirks into the camera and says “Who is hosting this show now?”  He talks about the 1205 times he has been bumped, while waiting in the green room for the past ten years.  It was entertainment at its best.  Check it out, and word to all, don’t mess with Jason Bourne!
