Movie Taken 2

Caught up with a former box office number one, Taken 2 starring Liam Neeson.  This was a sequel to the popular Taken.  Very fast paced, a lot of action in this movie.  His ex-wife is played by Franke Janssen and his daughter again played by Maggie Grace.  This go round, his daughter has to help save him and her mom when they are “taken” after he invites them to come visit him while on assignment.  Won’t give away the story.  Cute interaction between father and daughter over getting her driver’s license and over her boyfriend, Jamie.  Nice ending, outdoor dining in sunny LA after all the thrilling life and death action overseas in Istanbul, Turkey.  Song at the end says “come on out to LA, don’t knock it til you have tried it”.   Enjoyable movie to watch if you liked the first on (it is not too long)  and enjoy fast paced thrilling action.

Big upset at Australian Open

Young American Sloane Stephens pulls off the huge upset defeating her idol Serena Williams, 3 – 6, 7 – 5, 6 – 4!  Serena appeared to re-injure her right ankle (injured earlier in the tournament) in an awkward stop she had to make close to the net after hitting a winner in the second set and did have the trainer and medical staff out.  Apparently, it was her back that was giving her trouble.  She seemed to overcome both and be back to full speed by the third set and the young super star Stephens simply out hit her.  What a huge victory for this young American.  Really changes the dynamics of the semifinals and possibly the final as well.

Azarenka advanced earlier over Kuznetsova, 7 -5, 6 -1 and will be Sloane Stephens’ semifinal opponent.

More to come tomorrow.

SportsNation update

SportsNation, now coming to us from LA, has announced a time change.  DVR alert for some!  For those of you who love and follow this show, it will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 4:00 EST starting next week (obviously, 1:00 PST).  Love this show!  Have to admit, they make me jealous.  Every time I see the clips of  Charissa and Marcellus on the beach in LA in between commercial breaks, well, as I said in an earlier post, a part of me dies inside.  Wonder if Colin misses this gig at all?

Joe Theismann hosting with the crew today.

Another SEC underclassman heads to NFL

Ace Sanders, the outstanding WR for South Carolina has officially declared for the NFL draft.  His last performance in the Outback Bowl when the Gamecocks defeated Michigan should be a nice stamp on his outstanding resume for the NFL.  Just to put added emphasis on underclassmen heading to the NFL draft, thirty three (33) SEC underclassmen have already declared themselves eligible for the upcoming NFL draft.  I guess that’s what winning so many National Championships will do for you.

Let’s talk a little basketball…

Frank Haith, currently the head coach of Missouri and the former head coach at the University of Miami is in a bit of “hot water”.  While at Miami, he has been accused by the NCAA of unethical conduct and of creating an atmosphere of non compliance.  Wonder if Miami is glad he left??  He was very successful there.  Moving on…

Let’s talk about the Lakers.  Everyone else is.  On Mike and Mike in the morning on ESPN radio is was a hot topic.  Same can be said of ESPN First Take.  In fact, Stephen A. Smith had a lot to say.  But then again, Stephen A. Smith always has a lot to say!  (and that is OK)  The Lakers are REALLY struggling, losing again to the Bulls last night.  They are now 17 – 24 and have lost 9 of their past 11 games, 6 straight road games.  Clearly, they are in trouble, 4 games out of a playoff spot.  What is the problem?  Well, come on man, there is not just one problem!  Gasol comes in off the bench.  Really?  This guy has won two rings with the Lakers and is one of the most talented and versatile big men in the NBA.  So, he is not being utilized properly?  Dwight Howard, a great defender but an average offensive player perhaps, there I said it, so does Dwight really even want to be in LA?  How would anyone not want to be in LA and be on a team that is one of the most storied and successful in all of the NBA?  Kobe, oh my, how Kobe must feel about all of this.  The guy has won five rings, is in the latter stages of his career, and now he has this mess to deal with as he nears the home stretch of his glorious career.  He just wants to win, and he wants to win another ring.  Much of the Lakers problems begin in the front office with management, Jim Buss taking over for his father, Dr. Jerry Buss.  Rumor is Jim Buss is not around much.  Then there is the hiring of Mike D’Antoni as coach.  Is he the right coach for this Lakers team?  No question, he is a great coach, but is he not the right hire for LA at this juncture?  The Lakers are still trying to play the triangle offense implemented to perfection by Phil Jackson.  D’Antoni wants them to be up tempo but they are aging and not really excelling at this type of offense.  There needs to be some sort of compromise, both on the part of management and coaching and the players.  Time will tell if they can mesh this talent together and get it going in time to make the playoffs.  If not, what a horrible way for Kobe Bryant to be spending his remaining time in the NBA.

NFL news

Roger Goodell has officially reinstated Sean Payton as head coach of the New Orleans Saints.  OK…

Bit of controversy going on out there in the sports talk show world regarding the Tom Brady slide in this past weekend’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens.  When Tom went to slide, he stuck his leg up and appeared to intentionally or unintentionally kick Raven defender Ed Reed.  Was this a “dirty” play?  Hey, you watch the replay and be the judge.  Fair or foul, I am not saying.

More controversy, Wes Walker’s wife (Wes of the New England Patriots) had a very interesting post she made regarding Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens.  I am not going to repeat it, you can google it and judge for yourself.  Anyhow, she has apologized.  My or my, what a world we live in…

Updates from tennis down under

Action from Australia last evening/early this morning saw players advance into the semifinals.  Sharapova easily advanced in two sets 6 – 2, 6 – 2.  Li Na was a “surprise” winner over world #4 Radwanska in straight sets, 7 – 5, 6 – 3.  #1 Djokovic needed four sets to defeat Berdych and in perhaps the best match, David Ferrer came back from two sets down to defeat fellow Spaniard Almagro in a thrilling five set match, 4 – 6, 4 – 6, 7 – 6, 7- 6, 6 -2 as Almagro seemed to just run out of steam.

Tonight’s action will feature 2 Roger Federer in his record setting 35th straight Grand Slam quarterfinals against 7 Tsonga.  This could be a tricky match for the Swiss maestro.  He lost a couple of times to Tsonga in 2011 and they did not really face each other in 2012.  Tsonga has dropped fifteen pounds and is always flamboyant and entertaining.  Still, look for Federer to advance to the semifinals where he will likely meet Andy Murray (Murray also in action tonight).

Young American Sloane Stephens will take on her mentor Serena Williams.  This should be quite a barometer for her as far as how much she has progressed in the tennis world this year.  Also #1 Azarenka in action.

Next day reflections on NFL title games

Well, another year, another disappointment for the Atlanta Falcons.  Matt Ryan made a couple of critical mistakes but you cannot say that was the reason for the loss.  San Francisco would not be stopped in the second half, all credit to them and Coach Jim Harbaugh.

Still stunned that New England lost to Baltimore, taking nothing away from the Ravens, just shocked to see the Patriots shut out in the second half by Baltimore and their head coach, John Harbaugh.  A few critical mistakes by Patriot QB Tom Brady.

So, we have two Harbaugh coached teams in the Super Bowl.  Both teams scored 28 points in their respective title game victories.  Both have outstanding defenses.  Both have undervalued offenses and quarterbacks.  Should make for a very interesting match up in New Orleans in two weeks!

Misc. football news

Oregon announces the promotion of offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich to head coach to replace the departing Chip Kelly (headed to NFL).

Matt Ryan, QB for the Atlanta Falcons who injured his shoulder late in yesterday’s disappointing loss to the 49ers had a MRI and will not require surgery.

Falcon all world TE Tony Gonzalez says he is done, stick a fork in it, he has finished.  Sounds like he has made up his mind for now.  Perhaps later, after some reflection and time away, he might change his mind?  One can hope!
