Always tough on the road in the ACC

NC State had risen to a # 14 ranking after upsetting previous #1 Duke and tonight they traveled to Maryland.  They lost, 51 -50 and the Maryland students stormed the court.  It is really tough to get a road win, especially in the ACC.  Also in action tonight, #13 Butler, who previously upset Indiana when they were #1.  Gotta love college hoops!

In NBA news: Pau Gasol will return to action tomorrow night (Thursday) after missing five games due to a concussion.  He will return for the Lakers when they host LeBron and the Miami Heat.  This game should be a great barometer of how far the Lakers have gone in their efforts to “heal” themselves!

Tonight at 11:00 pm EST live Australian Open coverage continues with the one, the only, Roger Federer!

10:45 pm EST on Golf Channel, Tiger and Rory in action in Abu Dhabi.

P.S. at 10:00 pm EST on ABC new episode of hit drama Nashville.

Back tomorrow with updates!

DVR catchup with Showtime shows!

Attending an event here in Atlanta on Sunday evening put me behind a bit in my “TV viewing schedule”.  OK, I hear you, get a life!!  Anyhow, finally watched the season premieres of Californication, Shameless, and House of Lies.  Californication is just so outrageous.  House of Lies, what can I say, I worship Don Cheadle,  Kristin Bell is adorable as well, congrats again to her and her finance Dax Shephard of Parenthood on their baby on board.  Shameless is quite an experience.  This episode was an hour long, and for me that was too much.  Love Emmy Rossum and William Macy, but thirty minutes of this chaos is enough.  Actually had nightmares after watching an hour!  Everyone notice that all these “big stars” are doing TV?  Guess the economy really is affecting everyone and everything!  Will catch up with Parenthood and then I can move on to tonight’s episode of Nashville and Roger Federer doing what he does so well, play tennis!  Also, Rory and Tiger on tonight from Abu Dhabi!

SportsNation from LA

I just gotta say, watching these guys from LA is really fun!  (6:00 pm EST on ESPN2)  If you see the beginning shots of Charissa and Marcellus walking on the beach, the in between break shots of some yoga on the beach, walking along the streets in their shades looking cool, well, I know that a little part of me dies inside each and every day.  WOW!

Australian Open update

From down under yesterday, 1 Djokovic rolled over American Ryan Harrison 6-1, 6-2, 6-3.  5 Berdych advanced in three sets while 4 Ferrer took four sets to seal the deal.  Sharapova rolled in two quick sets.  Australian Sam Stosur was upset.  13 Ana Ivanovic won in three sets and 25 Venus Williams won in two sets and will next face Sharapova.

Tonight, it is Roger Federer time again as he will back in action against Davydenko.  Also Serena Williams will be back in action and it will be interesting to see how the ankle she injured in her first match holds up.

Breaking College Football news…

In a turn of events, Chip Kelly is leaving Oregon to become the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.  He had reportedly decided to stay at Oregon a little over a week ago and was negotiating a nice upgrade on his deal.  Then today comes the announcement that at age 49, he will indeed leave the college ranks to try his hand at coaching in the NFL.  His up tempo offense has been hugely successful at Oregon.  Many NFL teams already implement aspects of it in their offensive scheming.  Hate to see him leave the “quack attack” but wish him success.

In other west coast college football news, reportedly a scuffle broke out in the USC locker room after their loss to GT in the Sun Bowl (way to go Jackets!).  Some freshmen players made comments about the lack of senior leadership on the team after the embarrassing loss.  Some ten to fifteen players were involved.  Lane Kiffin does not quite have the same “cache” at USC as Pete Carroll does he?  Bit of loss of control of the players going on out there?

Are Lakers getting it together?

The LA Lakers dismantled the Milwaukee Bucs last night, 104-88.  Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard each scored 31 points in the lopsided victory.  The Lakers who have struggled mightily so far this year and are in danger of missing the playoffs have been trying to get it together.  The talent is there, but chemistry and execution have not been thus far.  They are still without a couple of key players but last night’s win looked like the kind of performance we have been expecting from this Lakers team.  They will get a really good litmus test on Thursday when LeBron and the Miami Heat come to LA.  Miami has actually been struggling a bit of late as well.

Private Practice recap

Long time ABC drama Private Practice (a spin off from Grey’s Anatomy) will end next Tuesday night.  Tonight, Charlotte and Cooper welcomed two more healthy babies to join their preemie, Georgia.  They now have three babies along with Cooper’s son from a previous relationship.  Addison (Kate Walsh) finally receives word that she has been awarded custody of her adopted son, Henry.  Jake (Benjamin Bratt) wants to know when she wants to get married.  And Amelia has come full circle in healing from her drug addiction and past problems and has found love (good for her!).  Next week’s episode will mark the end of this popular series.  Likely it will feature the marriage of Addison and Jake, or will it?  One expects a hiccup.  Jake is a prince of a man, but I have always loved Sam (Taye Diggs), not that it will figure in the outcome.  Sad to see this show come to an end but sometime they just run their course.

NFL: San Diego Chargers hire Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy as new head coach.

College Football: Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas (junior) will return for his senior year (wise move).

College Basketball:  Upset! Wisconsin defeats 2 Indiana, 64 – 59.  Don’t you just love the unpredictability of college hoops!

Australian Open:  American Brian Baker retires in match vs. fellow American Sam Querry due to injury.  Is scheduled to have a MRI.  Sad story.  Baker has come back from so many injuries over the past seven years.

Djokovic and Sharapova up later tonight.

NBA: Kobe and Lakers back in action tonight vs. Bucs, up 34 -33 early.
