Recognition for Ben Affleck at last!

Last night, justice was served!  Ben Affleck won the Critics Choice award for Best Director for Argo and Argo won the award for Best Film.  Take that Oscars!  After being snubbed inexplicably by the Oscars earlier this week, it was gratifying to see him win these prestigious awards.  As I have said before, I believe Argo and Silver Linings Playbook were the two best movies I saw in 2012!  I love that when accepting the award, he began with “I would like to thank the academy, no, I am kidding”!  Awesome for him and well deserved.

Complete list of winners: Best film: Argo; Best Director: Ben Affleck, Argo; Best actor: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln; Best actress: Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty; Supporting actor: Phillip Seymour Hoffman, The Master; Supporting actress: Anne Hathaway, Les Miserable; Original Screenplay: Quentin Tarantino, Django Unchained.

Speaking of movies, I really want to see Promised Land but have not yet been able to get there and now the times have changed at the local theater.  Missed it !  Oh well, eventually I will get it done!  Opening today two highly acclaimed movies, Gangster Squad and Zero Dark Thirty.  Both look spectacular with fantastic casts!

Later…

Please don’t shoot the messenger…

Please don’t shoot the messenger, but Sporting News has just released their College Football top ten for 2013.  Again, way too early but here it is:

1 Alabama, 2 Clemson, (um, good for them), 3 UGA (OK as a GT fan I will deal with this), 4 Notre Dame, 5 Ohio State, 6 Oregon (this low, how I love the “quack attack!), 7 South Carolina, 8 Stanford (love them, what a class program), 9 Texas A & M and 10 UCLA (interesting, how the balance of power in southern California has shifted, UCLA, no USC!)

OK, there you have it, another way too early ranking for 2103 College Football!

Nashville recap

Where to begin?  The popular ABC drama Nashville returned last night in all its glory (drama)!  This series is produced by Callie Khouri of Thelma and Louise fame, so you know it is really good!  OK, let’s see…Juliette marries her sweet and innocent football player boyfriend, or does she?  Deacon heads out on tour and hooks up with a reporter that he apparently had a previous relationship with some fourteen years ago.  Still, he is thinking of Rayna.  Speaking of Rayna, she and Teddy are at odds over her heading out on tour.  She wants to take the girls with her as she is no longer feeling like the marriage is what it should be, she cannot trust him since he lied, stole money, his partner in crime tried to kill herself, and at the end of the day, he is a pawn in the hands of her rich and controlling nutcase of a father.  Then, a big secret bombshell is dropped, their oldest daughter is not Teddy’s.  He is the only father she has ever know, but he is not the biological father.  Gee, wander who is…could it be Deacon?  But, in a very uncharacteristic show of backbone, Teddy stands up to Lamar (Rayna’s father) when he threatens to expose this well kept secret.  Tres impressive…Rayna decides to head out on tour with Juliette and let the girls stay with Teddy, they will visit her and she will return when she can on non show dates.  Wonder how long before her path crosses with Deacon’s while they are on the road?

Oscar Nominations announced

The Oscar Nominations were announced early this morning.  One of the highlights of this event was that the announcements were made by two huge shinning stars, Emma Stone and Seth MacFarlane.  Notables are as follows:  Best Picture: Argo, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Django Unchained, Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, Silver Linings Playbook

Best Actor: Bradley Cooper, Daniel Day Lewis (is he ever not brilliant?), Hugh Jackman, Joaquin Phoenix, Denzel Washington

Beat Actress: Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence (WOW!), Naomi Watts and others

Best Director: Ang Lee, Steven Spielberg (of course), David O. Russell

This is just a taste of the total list of nominees.  One glaring absence in my mind is Ben Affleck.  He failed to receive a nomination for actor in Argo, and as Director of Argo.  A grave omission.  As much hype as Zero Dark Thirty is getting, I still believe the two best movies I saw in 2012 were Argo and Silver Linings Playbook.

The Oscars air on February 24, 2013.

As an aside:  I really aim to get to the movies to see Promised Land with Matt Damon and John Krasinski.   Hopefully, very soon so look forward to my thoughts on this feel good movie in the very near future.  Have not seen Les Miserables yet either, will eventually, but a reliable first hand account has told me, bring tissues!!

Lakers drop third game this week

The LA Lakers lost to the San Antonio Spurs last night, 108 – 105.  Tony Parker of the Spurs reached a milestone in his career with the achievement of 5.000 career assists (remember in the Lakers’ last game, Steve Nash became the 5th NBA player in history to achieve 10,000 career assists).  Congrats to Tony Parker.  Meanwhile, this was not all bleak for the Lakers who are playing without three key players (Howard, Gasol, and Hill).  They made a huge second half run at the Spurs and played with a level of emotion and intensity that has been lacking.  Perhaps this is in fact a turning point for “the” team from LA.  Once Howard and Gasol return (soon), if they can continue to play with this kind of passion, perhaps things can begin to turn.  I still look for them to make the playoffs.  They will next play on Friday night at 10:30pm EST when they host OKC.

Ted Roof returning to Georgia Tech as defensive coordinator!

Speaking of Georgia Tech, great news today for the Institute!  Former Yellow Jacket great Ted Roof is set to return to the flats as defensive coordinator!  YES!!  This is great news.  He was a former defensive coordinator at Auburn, most recently at Penn State under Bill O’Brien and prior to that, head coach at Duke.  Ted was a defensive standout and member of the infamous “Black Watch” defense (everybody remember…tick tock, tick tock!).  This is great news for Georgia Tech and their football program heading into 2013.

In other news, senior A-Back Orwin Smith has been selected for the All Star game.  Also, defensive standout Jeremiah Attaochu (a junior)  has decided to return for his senior season.  More good news for Georgia Tech’s defense for 2013!

I love good news like this for the Jackets.
